My parents came to the US from India in the 1960s, along with other immigrants from India. Back then, there were few Indians anywhere around the US. My father came to Kansas, where he would get his Ph.D.Six months later, my mother came with the three of us kids — my sister, my brother, and me. We were just six, five and three years old then.
It was the very first winter when we were in Kansas. It was so cold, but we didn’t have heavy coats or warm clothes. We didn’t have a concept of how cold it really could be in the Midwest, and there was a new surprise every day. We didn’t have a car or anything like that, and my dad didn’t have a US driver’s license. But anyway, my father was studying for his Ph.D., and he would walk up and down a big hill to and from the campus on a regular basis.
Since I was three years old, I didn’t go to school, but my sister and brother were in school. My father had to walk down the big hill to take them to school every day and then walk back up the hill to go to university. After about three weeks of living like this, a woman called Valerie, whose son John was in the same class as my brother, started noticing them. On a very cold snowy morning, when they went to school as usual,Valerie passed by. She pulled up and said, “I see you on the way every day. Don’t you feel cold without coats?”My father responded,“We didn’t expect the weather would be so cold in Kansas.”Valerie said,“Maybe I can take your daughter and son to school. Would you like a ride?”

    阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写一段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
I was lacking in everything needed to start a new friendship in a new town.
My parents had moved to the town when they decided to look for new jobs, but they didn't realize I was really hurt when I had to say goodbye to my old friends. It felt frightful to be a new student in my new school. When my classmates were chatting, I felt left out. I was not good at math or history, nor was I good at drawing or dancing. I was shy and timid (羞怯的). I had a few friends back at my hometown and it seemed that they were the only ones with whom I could be friends for my whole life. I felt there was no room for anyone else on my friends list. I was ashamed of myself, and believed I deserved no notice from others. That is, until Emily came to my world.
Emily was fearless, frank and easy to be around. She was everything I was not and I was too shy to come out of my shell. I met Emily in school almost every day but I never talked to her, even though we were in the same class. How I wished I could be like her, or at least be a friend of hers.
It was another ordinary day. I wandered to the bus stop in the morning and waited for the school bus. Birds were singing with their friends, but who could I sing with? I got on the bus and went straight to my usual seat, complaining in a low voice about getting up early and going to school like every other day, and about how things were going to be the same all over again. Little did I realize something different would happen that day.
    注意:
    1.续写词数应为80到100词;
    2.请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
When I got up to get off the bus, my schoolbag was stuck on the armrest (扶手).

Fifty-year-old Gayle had been living with her pet dog Jennifer for eight years. She had no child, so she treated Jennifer as her daughter. One night, Gayle suddenly found that Jennifer, who was always lying beside her at night, was not there, so she got up at once and checked the whole house. However, Jennifer was nowhere to be found, making Gayle very worried.
Gayle tried to be optimistic and told herself that Jennifer might return soon. However, Jennifer still didn’t appear the next morning. Gayle then called her nephews and friend Tracy for help. When they arrived, they comforted Gayle first. Then they started searching the neighbourhood, the streets and nearby blocks for any sign of Jennifer, but they still didn’t find Jennifer by lunchtime the next day.
Gayle then decided to search the neighborhood again. She couldn’t explain it, but she had a feeling that Jennifer was somewhere nearby. Tracy accompanied Gayle in the search to offer help and support. After hours of searching, they got tired and decided to return home to rest for a while so that they could have more energy to search later on that day. They began walking back to Gayle’s home in a very depressed mood.
On their way back, they heard a cry coming from an abandoned shed (棚屋). They ran over to the shed immediately. When they broke into it, they found a large hole in the ground. And to their surprise, Jennifer was there wagging her tail.

On his way home, Jonathon saw a gray, long-haired cat sitting on the sidewalk. As he stopped to pet her, he noticed that she was not wearing a collar. She rubbed her head against his hand and began to purr (发呼噜声). She reminded Jonathon of Smoky, the cat he had when he was younger. Smoky’s fur had been long and gray too.
Jonathon petted the cat for a while. Then he said, “I have to go,” and continued home. To his surprise, the cat followed him.
When Jonathon was home, he walked up the porch steps and went in the kitchen. The cat followed him up the steps and sat quietly outside the door, watching him closely. Jonathon made a sandwich. The cat continued to stare at him. Jonathon sighed. “I know it’s not a good idea to feed a stray cat,” he said, “but you look so hungry! I can’t sit here and eat without feeding you too!”
Jonathon put some turkey on a plate for the cat. As Jonathon watched, she ate every scrap of turkey and then began to clean her face and paws. “Wow!” Jonathon said, “You must have been starving. I wonder how long it has been since someone fed you.”
Jonathon finished his sandwich and looked at the cat. Her long fur was matted (乱蓬蓬的). Jonathon remembered that Smoky’s brush and toys were stored in the garage. “I’m going to clean you up a little,” Jonathon said to the cat.
Jonathon found Smoky’s brush and got to work. As the dirt came out, the cat’s fur began to get lighter. “Hey!” Jonathon said, realizing the truth. “You’re not gray—you’re white!”
After her brushing, the cat climbed onto Jonathon’s lap and purred. “You’re so friendly, you probably belong to someone,” Jonathon said. “I bet you’re just lost.” When Jonathon’s father came home, Jonathon showed him the cat that had stretched out in a patch of sun on the porch. “Why don’t you make some signs to place in the neighborhood,” his father suggested.
    注意:
    1. 续写字数应为150左右;

“June, where is your science project?” asked Ms Shelley, gesturing to June’s bare desk.
    “It hopped away,” said June.
“Off your desk?” Ms Shelley asked, and the classroom laughed.
“No!” said June helplessly. “The stupid project flew away when I was trying to catch it down by the river! And I got wet with disgusting river water.”
“Tragic (悲剧的) though that may be,” said Ms Shelley, “it doesn’t change the fact that you don’t have a science project like everyone else, so you still get an F.”
June buried her face in her hands. She was having a really bad day. The worst of it was that this day was also her twelfth birthday. Her birthday was on June first, which was how she had gotten her name.
The day’s awfulness began at breakfast. Carl threw up while eating his baby food, causing her parents to spend the whole time cleaning up the mess and worrying over Carl possibly being sick. Like a good mature twelve-year-old, June kept quiet and pretended she wasn’t angry that her birthday was becoming all about Carl, just like every other day was. She understood reasonably that it wasn’t Carl’s fault if he was sick, but it was just so unfair that the birthday girl wasn’t the centre of attention in her own home.
Another thing which made her very angry was the fact that she still didn’t have a cell phone. It was worse now that she was officially one year away from being a teenager. Would she have a cell phone by then? What kind of twenty-first-century teenager didn’t have a cell phone?
As she walked home from the bus stop, June wondered what further unpleasantness would be waiting for her when she got home. Did her parents even remember that today was her birthday? They had given NO such signs at breakfast. What did she want anyway? Did she want another one of those corny(老掉牙的)birthday parties that were thrown for her when she was little? She’d enjoyed them at the time, but now she was older and that sort of thing would only embarrass her.
No, it was probably for the best that they didn’t remember.

“SURPRISE!”Not only her parents, but also Grandpa, Grandma, and Uncle Larry jumped out, wearing party hats and carrying balloons, cake, and presents, with Carl crawling(爬行) behind.

After a very meaningful conversation with my dad about the old days, we came up with an object that we both remembered clearly. It was my first bicycle. My mind told me I got it when I was seven, who was cheated to ride it for fifty yards alone the first time I tried!
My dad put together all the small pieces of the bicycle from a beautiful material that he called, “Your own car.” Of course I knew he had some magical ability, but I didn’t think he could make such an awesome object. He added the seat and the pedals (脚踏板) so that I would not have any problems. My dad recalled the bicycle was the smallest he could find while I remember how huge it was. I was so afraid of it and there was no way that I was going to control that monster-sized material. The bicycle was left in my backyard as a decoration for a month because I refused to ride it. Honestly, I was scared to try it.
After a month, my dad gave me a lecture to teach me what being a man was all about. I was finally determined to try it. My dad was proud of me and I felt very manly. He and I went to the park to see what we could do there. The park was empty when we arrived. I had no doubt that my dad told everybody not to be there because we had to use it. I felt sorry for other people, but I was proud to have such an capable person as my dad. We found a smooth and open space. My dad was holding the back part of the seat to make sure I didn’t fell. He promised me that I was not going to fall because he would be running right behind, holding the bicycle.

It was a day just like every other day. I woke up early in the morning and went to run on Mount Gracious with my dog, Bubbles. As I ran up the mountain, with my dog following close behind, I felt energetic and refreshed. Running in a natural environment never failed to make me feel alive. When I reached the top, I drank some water and enjoyed the beautiful sunrise. This scene always took my breath away, no matter how many times I had seen it.
Having rested enough, Bubbles and I made our way back down the mountain. As we were running downhill, I saw an unfamiliar path and decided to explore the area. The path was full of rocks. It was not easy to walk.
Suddenly, I slipped on a muddy patch, rolling down five meters before I managed to grab hold of an exposed root of a huge tree. I was safe for now. However, I was seriously injured. My knees were badly hurt. My right foot was also dislocated (脱臼). I knew for sure I would be unable to make my way up or down the mountain without help. I called out to Bubbles and he barked loudly from above. It seemed like he understood that I needed help. He looked down at me pitifully before disappearing from sight.
As night fell, panic (恐慌) set in and scary thoughts went through my mind. There were many things that I had got to do. I couldn't die! This would not have happened if I had stuck to my usual path.
I was losing hope when I heard barking. It was Bubbles. I rubbed my eyes as I struggled to keep awake. But there was silence. Who could it be? Was I hallucinating (产生幻觉)? Then I heard some voices and more barking. Yes. Help was near, I knew. I could count on my dog to get help.

Mrs. Crawley, a large woman, often worked into night at a hotel beauty-shop. She was walking alone with a large heavy back-pack at about eleven o’clock one night when a boy named Jack ran up behind her and tried to snatch (抢夺) her pack.
The pack’s strap (带子) broke. The boy’s weight and the weight of the pack combined cased him to lose his balance, so Jack fell on his back on the sidewalk. Mrs. Crawley simply turned around and picked the boy up by his shirt front.

Mrs. Crawley said, looking at his face, “Now I got a great mind to wash your face. It’s dirty! Did you have nobody home to tell you to wash your face?”
    “No, Ma’am,” said Jack.
“Then it will get washed this evening,” said Mrs. Crawley starting up the street dragging Jack behind her. “You ought to be my son. I would teach you right from wrong. Least I can do right now is to wash your face. Are you hungry?”

    I Survived Being Caught In A Mudslide(泥石流)
It was May 2018, and my boyfriend, Gabe Smith, and I were driving from my home in Weyburn, to visit friends in Nelson.
At around 5:30 p.m., we were driving along the Crowsnest Highway, a steep and winding mountain road. I was texting my mother when I happened to look up in time to see a huge tree in front of us on the highway. It was being pushed down by a torrent (洪流) of mud that was swallowing everything in its path. We didn’t know about the recent flooding in the area, and now we were trapped in it. Gabe and I looked at each other unbelievably and said, “Oh, god.” Within seconds, our car was rolling 30 meters down the cliffside (悬崖边).
I don’t know how long we were unconscious (昏迷的), but I woke up to the sound of Gabe moaning (呻吟). He laid beside me and his blood was everywhere.
Our car had landed on a small area among trees that had come down with the mudslide. On one side of us was the mountain. On the other, a steep drop of about 1,000 meters into a river.
I tried opening my door with a sharp pain in the chest. In addition, my left ankle had been broken. Gabe had broken his nose and cheek, as well as his chest bone, leaving him blind in his left eye and having difficulty in breathing.
As the doors were crashed out of shape, and my window failed to be opened, the only way out was through the driver’s side window. Although it was difficult and painful, we both managed to get out of it.

When I was in high school, I had a dream: to appear in a television program. I was too shy to share my dream with my teacher, however, or anyone else—except my parents. To me, it sounded like a dream that could never come true.
People often told me I could be a nurse, a teacher, or a hairdresser, which I thought were all great careers. But that was not what I wanted. Thankfully, my parents had raised me and my siblings to have lots of confidence. Both my parents, especially my dad, often said, “You can do anything you want to.”
With his encouragement, I applied to the radio and television arts program at Ryerson University in Toronto. I was overjoyed when I was admitted. I really loved the program and worked hard —and I was named the most outstanding graduate of the year. Just by getting into Ryerson and graduating at the top of the class, I began to think that maybe my dream could come true.
After I graduated, I applied to the CBC and CTV for a job. They both said the same thing: “We love your education, but you don’t have any experience. Come back when you get some!” And I kept saying, “How can I get this experience? I’ve been busy getting an education.” They both turned me down.
Luckily, Global Television had just started broadcasting in Canada that year. I thought to myself, “I’m new and they’re new. Why not give it a try?” I didn’t know anyone there, so if I was going to get to know one person at Global, it might as well be the president. I found out who the president was and decided to call him directly. What could I lose? I was scared, but I knew deep down inside that this was what I wanted. When I called my dad and told him my plan, he said, “Good! That’s exactly what you should do.”

    A Great Monday
Monday started out great. I woke up on time, ate breakfast and did some last minute studying for my math test that day. I was confident that I would get a high mark. I left my house, and minutes later, I was sitting with my friends on the school bus. We were busy talking about how we spent our weekend. At one stop, a boy named Ryan got on hurriedly. He tripped(绊倒) over someone’s foot and THUMP! He fell flat onto the floor.
Every one of us on the bus looked on and laughed crazily. Ryan picked himself up, dusted his jacket and made his way to an empty seat. He tried to laugh with us, but his face was burning with embarrassment. The rest of the morning flew by. I did well in my math test. It wasn’t long before the lunch bell rang. I met my friends from the cheerleading team in the dining hall.
When we finished eating, we headed out to the courtyard to practice a cheer we would do at that night’s football game. After much practice, we finally managed to do the cheer perfectly. We decided to practice it again one last time. Again, just like the rest of my day so far, the cheer was going great. I raised my leg for one last toe touch. RIIPPP! I felt my jeans was torn down in the middle of my backside.
I froze(僵住了). I had no idea what to do but stand still. Then I heard people burst out laughing and I saw them pointing at my broken jeans. Trying to cover myself with my hands, I tried to laugh too, but I felt tears began to well up in my eyes.

Arthur was messy. He didn’t try to make messes, but he didn’t try to clean up much, either. There were always small pieces of food on the table when he was done eating. His socks never made it into the hamper (洗衣篮). And he only picked up his toys when Mom threatened to throw them away. Most days, Mom followed Arthur around the house and cleaned up after him. She brushed the crumbs (碎屑) into her hand and threw them away after meals. She picked up his socks and made sure they got washed, dried and folded neatly before going back in the drawer. She often picked up his toys when he left them to do something else.
One day, Mom asked Arthur to pick up his toy trains. “Not right now,” Arthur said. He was reading a comic book. The trains had been on the living room floor since the morning.
“You know what, Arthur? I’m not going to ask you again. I’m done cleaning today.” And with that, Mom put her feet up on the sofa and picked up a book to read.
At dinner time, Arthur noticed that there was a big pile of crumbs at his place at the table. Mom’s spot was nice and clean. Arthur didn’t like the crumbs very much. After dinner, Arthur’s feet felt cold. He went to his room and opened his drawer, but the drawer was empty. “Mom, where are my socks?” Arthur called.
“There weren’t any socks in your hamper, so I didn’t wash them,” Mom said. Arthur felt unhappy. Now his feet would be cold, unless he wanted to wear dirty socks from the floor. He decided to stay barefoot.
When it was time for bed, Arthur said good night to Mom and turned to go upstairs. Arthur stepped right on his toy train in his bare feet. “Ouch!” cried Arthur. “That really hurt.”

As the late afternoon sun beat down on his farm last May, Brandon Leseberg finished feeding his cows and decided to call it a day. As they often did, his two sons, Louie, 6, and Everett, 3 followed him. As they headed for the house, the two boys ran ahead of their father who stopped to close the gate. Louie stopped at a water tap (水龙头) above an old well. Unknown to the Lesebergs, the board covering the well had, over time, grown brittle (易碎的). When Louie stepped on it, it caved in.
Brandon had just finished locking the gate when he tuned around and saw only his youngest son. “Where’s Louie?” he shouted. “He fell in the hole!” Everett said. Brandkon, 37, quickly realized what had happened. He ran to the well and heard Louie struggling. Without hesitation, he jumped in.
As he fell some 70 feet down the well Brandon heard Louie screaming. Somehow Brandon managed to grab onto a pipe that ran down the side of the well. He hit the cold water at the bottom of the well. He popped his head out of the water and grabbed Louie, who was panicking and trying to stay afloat (漂浮的) in the water. Brandon raised his son onto his chest as he put his own legs and back against the narrow walls for support. “All right, Dad, you can pull us out now,” Louie said.
If only it were that easy. There was no way he could climb out. The pipe that he’d grabbed during his fall was too slippery (滑的) to be of any use. There was only one way out. Looking up to see Everett looking down at them from the top of the well, Brandon shouted, “Everett, you’re going to have to be a big boy and save us. Run to the road and stand by the mailbox until someone stops. Tell them we need help.”

There was no sign that the earthquake was coming.
A 7.8 magnitude (震级) quake almost flattened the city, killing over thousands of lives in less than a few minutes.
In the midst of destruction and chaos, a father left his wife securely at home and rushed to the school where his son Daniel was supposed to be, only to discover that the building was as flat as a pancake.
After the upsetting shock, he remembered the promise he had made to Daniel: “No matter what, I’ll always be there for you!” And tears began to fill his eyes. He looked at the pile of ruins that once was the school. Everything looked hopeless, but he kept remembering his commitment to his son.
He began to concentrate on where he walked his son to class at school each morning. Remembering his son’s classroom would be in the back right corner of the building, he rushed there and started digging through the stones and bricks.
As he was digging, other anxious parents arrived, heartbroken, shouting desperately: “Mary!” “Sam!”
Some other well-meaning parents tried to pull him off what was left of the school, saying: “It’s too late!” “They’re dead!” “You can’t help!” “Go home!” “Come on! There’s nothing you can do here!” “You’re just going to make things worse!”
To each parent he responded with one line: “Are you going to help me now?”
And then he continued to dig for his son, stone by stone.
Some firefighters showed up and tried to pull him off the school’s ruins, saying, “Fires are breaking out, and explosions are happening everywhere. You’re in danger. We’ll take care of it. Just go home!” To which this loving, determined father asked, “Are you going to help me now?”
The fire chief replied, “You’re angry and worried. I get it. But you are not helping by staying here. Just go home. We will help you find your son!” To which he replied, “But I promised my son I’ll always be there for him.”

One of my fondest memories of travel is when I spent a few months in 2019 backpacking Eastern Europe. From Poland to Ukraine, every country I visited exceeded (超过) my expectations. However, the place that I will never forget is Romania. It is a big country in Eastern Europe with little recognition. Additionally, I was surprised to find such unexpected kindness in the capital of Bucharest.
The first day I arrived in Bucharest from Brasov, I had to take the bus from the train station to my accommodation. I boarded the bus and found that none of my cards worked and I wasn’t able to buy a ticket. I was stopped by patrols (巡逻队) on the bus and fined for not having a ticket, even after explaining that it wasn’t my intention and I had just arrived from Brasov. Despite showing them my train ticket and the fact that I was carrying my Osprey 55L backpack with me, they still didn’t believe me and fined me.
After doing some research online, I found that most buses in Bucharest are outdated and do not accept cash or any form of payment on board. You have to purchase a card at certain places in the city, top it up with money, and then pay onboard. The buses connecting to the airports are more modern. You can use wireless pay to purchase a ticket. I was delighted after finding out such good news as I did not want another fine.
Fast forward to my last day in Bucharest, I was taking the bus to Bucharest Airport. When the bus arrived, I got on and could not find the ticket machine as the bus was inundated (淹没) with people. People were standing like sardines in a can. I made my way toward the center of the bus with my big backpack and found the ticket machine to be the same as the one I had encountered on my first day in Bucharest. I tried every method. Nothing worked. I started to panic.

    My Kindergarten Hero
We had just completed a unit on community heroes, and I had given my kindergarten class a task to write or draw about their favorite hero. Each child was busy creating colorful masterpieces such as firefighters, policemen and doctors. Several students had chosen to draw larger-than-life brothers and sisters or moms and dads.
However, one little boy was having difficulty with the assignment. Cameron had touched my heart early in the school year. He had dark brown hair and wore his thick glasses. He looks like a younger version of Harry Potter at best. He often snorted (鼻息声) when he laughed, and the rest of the class would laugh along with him.
Cameron suffered from autism (自闭症), but that didn’t matter to me or his classmates. We all loved him just the way he was. He was full of wonderful stories and brought a special feeling to our classroom. I sat and watched as Austin worked with Cameron. Austin had a wonderful way of interacting with Cameron and he helped him find his hero. Within a few minutes, Cameron quickly began drawing blue lines and curves on his paper—he was particularly fond of the color blue.
Finally, it was time for everybody to share their hero pictures. I listened as each student proudly stood in front of the class, picture held high, and described his or her hero. Several students described their heroes by giving them superhuman strength. It was finally Cameron’s turn to share his hero. Cameron stood up and anxiously placed his large blue stick-figured drawing in front of his face. He then quickly burst out it was a picture of me. He added that I helped him learn things and then quickly sat back down. Tears began to form in the corner of my eyes, but nothing could have prepared me for what happened next.

    阅读下面短文,根据所给情节进行续写,使之构成一个完整的故事。
Jenny was very nervous. She had a swimming competition in the morning and could not sleep. She tossed and turned all night. She was no stranger to competition. In fact, she loved it. Jenny was very athletic and was not only part of a swim team, but a soccer team, as well. She even won a soccer championship with her teammates last year. But this particular swimming competition was important. She had made it all the way to the finals and didn’t want to let her teammates down.
When her alarm went off at 6: 00 am, she hit the snooze button and rolled onto her side, wishing she could just stay in bed all day. Having slept so poorly, Jenny was not at all ready for the day. After a few minutes, she stretched her arms above her head and yawned before throwing her covers back and climbing out of bed.
She was terribly anxious about the competition, so much that she couldn’t even eat breakfast. It felt as though she got butterflies in her stomach. Jenny’s mother looked concerned. “You have to eat something,” she said. “It’s important to keep your strength up.”
“I know, I’m just not hungry this morning,” Jenny replied, picking at her eggs with a fork. All she could think about was facing the competition. What if she performed poorly? What if she disappointed her coach and teammates? She wouldn’t be able to forgive herself.
Jenny’s mom sensed her daughter’s worry and gave her a comforting pat on the back. “You’ll be great, dear. Just do your best. That’s all that matters.”
Jenny felt a bit of relief and appreciated her mother’s kind words. But by the time she got to the athletic club where the swim meet was being held, that feeling of comfort had disappeared. She went to the locker room to prepare for the competition.

It was a cold March day in High Point, North Carolina, with temperatures staying around 15℃. The girls on the Wesleyan Academy Softball were waiting for their next turns during practice, stamping their feet to stay warm. Eighth-grader Taylor watched her teammate Paris play. The two didn’t know each other well — Taylor had just moved to town a month or so before.
Paris was the queen of the softball court, with super skills of playing softball and strong leadership — almost all the players respected and followed her. Seemingly, Taylor’s coming challenged the current situation as Taylor was the team captain of her former school. So sometimes Paris just led the team to win the match, leaving Taylor behind on the bench.
The girls were training hard. Emma tried her best to make a good throw, which might seem foreign to someone just starting to learn the game. Anna kept her arm over her shoulder when she was throwing the softball. Suddenly, Paris fell to the ground and started shaking, with her eyes rolling back. Taylor realized it was an emergency.
It certainly was. Paris had suffered a sudden heart failure. Without immediate medical care, Paris would die. “ Does anyone know CPR? ”
CPR is a life-saving skill. To do CPR, you press on the sick person’s chest so that blood moves through the body and takes oxygen to organs. Without oxygen the brain is damaging quickly.
Amazingly, Taylor had just taken a CPR course the day before. Still, she hesitated. She didn’t think she knew it well enough. Looking around, she found no one step forward. They all were at a loss what to do. Taylor was scared, too. But she knew it was the difference between life and death.

I drove to my home. I was waiting for the traffic light. The light turned green but the car in front of me didn’t move forward. The driver began to turn around as something was blocking his path and sped off. I began to do the same when I realized a man in a wheelchair blocked the way. In fact, I recognized him as one of my follow classmates whom I had seen many times over the past four years, but never spoken to.
But I was in a hurry because I had an important thing to do. I began to drive off. I glanced in my rearview mirror (后视镜) and saw the man struggling to get his chair out of the muddy crossing.
Surely someone else will help him, I thought. But what if everyone else thought that, too? I stopped.
His name was Jordan. His cerebral palsy (脑瘫) affected his speech. I knew if l was going to help him, it meant pushing him to wherever he was going, in the rain, in the mud.
I locked my car and quickly caught up to him. I began to push. It was uphill for what seemed like a mile. Every hundred yards or so, with great effort, Jordan would turn around his head so that he could look up at me in appreciation.
At the end of our long trip to Jordan’s apartment, both of us were in sweat. I couldn’t believe that Jordan had managed to do this alone, every day for four years. I blew up every time I couldn’t find a parking space close enough to my classes! Jordan insisted that I come in and dry off. He said there was someone he wanted me to meet.

I was in my room, unwilling to head to the community theatre with “my brother” Henry. He was just adopted by my parents recently. I was not in the mood for being onstage with him.
“Kristie, come here,” my mom called. Following her voice, I found her outside the bathroom, holding a wet book. She gave the book a shake. “Henry’s book was in the bathtub. Did you put it there?” She glared at me—something she never did before Henry came to our home. I didn’t wet his book on purpose. Tears of hurt clouded my eyes. Worse still, she promised to buy him a new copy. My heart ached. Henry was stealing my mother’s love. He was ruining my life.
Meanwhile, Henry was just nearby, absorbed in working on a complicated rope knot (绳结) as usual. Why did a boy like him do the girly work? Far from manly!
Soon, it was time to have to set off for the community theatre. As Henry walked ahead of us to the car, my mom took me aside and said in a low voice, “It’s the first time for Henry to be onstage. Be kind to him, Honey.” I nodded but sighed. Being kind didn’t use to be hard. But after Henry moved in, everything felt different. The theatre used to be a special place for my parents and me. With Henry involved, it didn’t seem so special any more.
Finally, it was our stage time. My heart beat wildly. I forgot my annoyance at Henry for a while. As we kids lined up, ready to act out our short play, I realized how loosely I had tied the drawstring (束带) on my skirt. Sure enough, my skirt began to drop. Laughter from the audience could be heard, and even though I was wearing shorts under my skirt, I could feel my face burst into flames. However, my hands were full. If only someone could help me out!
