    A

A new version of a student loan forgiveness application will be officially launched by the Education Department later this month. It is to cancel up to $10,000 in debt for those earning less than $125,000 per year and up to $20,000 for those who received Pell Grants. It will not forgive any student loan debt under the debt relief plan prior to October 23, 2022.

How long the application will be up: The department is offering periodic access to the form—so borrowers may have to refresh the site page or keep checking back. The application will be available through Dec. 31, 2023

What the application asks for: It requires only basic information, including name, birth date, Social Security number, phone number and an e-mail address. Borrowers will not need what’s known as an FSA ID to log into the application, nor will they need to upload any documents, including tax records.

Will borrowers need to prove they meet the plan’s income requirements? Instead of providing documents that confirm you, as an individual, earned $125,000 in 2020 or 2021 or, as a couple, less than $250, 000, the application simply asks borrowers to check a box to guarantee under the laws that all information provided on this form is true and correct.

How long will it take to process each application? A matter of weeks. The department wants to relieve as many debts as possible before student loan payments restart in January.

    1. What is the aim of the student loan forgiveness application?

    A. To advocate Pell Grant. B. To give students a reward.

    C. To increase family incomes. D. To ease the debt burden.

    2. What is a must for applicants?

    A. Submitting a paper form. B. Uploading the tax records.

    C. Providing true information. D. Paying off the loan before January.

    3. What is the text?

    A. An advertisement. B. A loan handbook.

    C. An official report. D. A department work plan.

At most schools in the U. S., it’s customary to have a cheer squad (啦啦队) to support athletics. Cheerleaders drum up excitement before games, put on jaw—dropping routines at games, and provide support on the sidelines of most events. But students who participate in performing and visual arts seldom receive the same displays of support as athletes do. A group of students at Mountain View High School in Orem, Utah, decided to change that fact by creating a cheer squad just for the arts.

Their school’s athletics cheer squad is called the Bruin Crazies, so they named their artistic cheer squad the Bruin Classies! This is a new brand with which they could create something for all of the arts, whether it is band, dance show, photography and art galleries—to give them some publicity and cheer them on.

Classies wear a “uniform” of bow ties to indicate the “sense of class”artistic efforts bring their school. They carry around signs to advertise the upcoming play, musical, or dance performance. Hoping to drum up ticket sales, they encourage their fellow students to come out to support the hard work of others. They also attend performances and displays at school to cheer their classmates on.

After years of discussion to make a cheer squad for the arts, this is the first time they’ve been able to pull it off. More than 90 students have already signed up to be a Bruin Classy! “The students have poured their time and energy into their arts, and it is worthy to be celebrated. Caleb Stay, the cheer squad leader, said, “If you worked really hard on something and no one showed up, it would be disappointing. We just want to make sure that no one feels that way. ”

This is such an amazing idea! We can’t believe no one has come up with it before, but hopefully these thoughtful teens have started a new trend to support the arts in other schools, too.

    4. Why did the students in Mountain View high school set up the Bruin Classies?

    A. To support the arts in their schoo1. B. To compete with the Bruin Crazies.

    C. To participate in the art performing. D. To cheer the athletes on in the games.

    5. How do Classies make the art performances appealing to students at school?

    A. By offering free tickets to students.

    B. By popularizing the art performances.

    C. By inviting students to attend performances.

    D. By wearing a special uniform for art festivals.

    6. What can be inferred from Caleb Stay’s words?

    A. More students will sign up the Bruin Classy.

    B. Few students like to attend the art performance.

    C. The artistic cheer squad will become a new trend.

    D. The students’artistic efforts deserve to be admired.

    7. What is the best title of the text?

    A. Move over, “Crazies,” the “Classies” are here

    B. “Crazies” keep up, never give in to “Classies”

    C. The Bruin Crazies, a “uniform” of bow ties

    D. The Bruin Crazies, a big hit in Orem, Utah

On October 12,2021,China officially announced its first five national parks, which are homes to endangered species ranging from the Siberian tigers on the Russian border to the world’s last 30 Hainan black crested gibbons(黑冠长臂猿)in southern China’s tropical rainforest.

By uniting hundreds of protected areas managed by various provinces, the new national park system’s goal is to strengthen conservation under the central authority of the new National Forestry and Grassland Administration(NFGA)

These five parks cover an area two-third the size of the US national park system. The largest, Sanjiangyuan National Park in Qinghai Province, is almost the size of Mississippi.

With such an ambitious plan, there are bound to be challenges. For one the government has to balance the need for the livelihoods of the locals with wildlife conservation. It has not announced a plan to create a permitting system that would regulate how people enjoy nature. What’s more,ecotourism-which is defined as tourism that benefits both locals and their environment-only exists in a fifth of China’s nature reserves.

But there’s hope that the existing ecotourism projects in such nature reserves as Sanjiangyuan National Park and Wolong Nature Reserve will inspire efforts elsewhere in the new park system. Since 2018, Sanjiangyuan National Park has run a community-led tourism program that benefits both locals and snow leopards(), the park’s main tourist draw. For $43 a day, visitors can stay with local families, who act as guides to spot these rare “cats” in the wild.

“The community has made all the major decisions, and 100 percent of the income stays in the community. It’s been incredibly successful,” says Marc Brody, who has worked in China since 1994.

NFGA agrees that well-designed ecotourism can improve local ecosystems. It says that a core mission(核心使命)of China’s national parks is to promote eco-civilizationa mission that can be advanced by involving visitors Written into China’s constitution(宪法)in 2012, eco-civilization means scientifically balancing the economic development and the environmental protection.

    8. Which park is home to the thirty endangered gibbons?

    A. Hainan National Park. B. Wolong Nature Reserve.

    C. Northeast National Park. D. Sanjiangyuan National Park.

    9. What can be learned about Sanjiangyuan National Park?

    A. It is bigger than Mississippi. B. It sits on the Russian border.

    C. It is a pioneer in ecotourism. D. It has a mature permitting system.

    10. Which word best describes Marc Brody’s attitude to ecotourism?

    A. Skeptical. B. Unconcerned C. Disapproving D. Positive

    11. What is the main purpose of China’s national parks?

    A. To protect the endangered animals.

    B. To help the local people out of poverty.

    C. To balance the economy and the environment.

    D. To set a better development example for the world.

A method to transform a commonly thrown-away plastic to a resin (树脂) used in 3D printing could allow making better use of plastic waste, A team of Washington State University researchers developed a simple and efficient way to transform polyactic acid (PLA) (聚乳酸), a bio-based plastic used in products such as filament, plastic silverware and food packaging to high-quality resin.

“We found a way to immediately turn this into something that’s stronger and better, and we hope that will provide people with the inspiration to upcycle this stuff instead of just throw it away,” said Yu-Chung Chang, a postdoctoral researcher in the WSU School of Mechanical and Materials Engineering and a co-corresponding author on the work. “We made stronger materials just straight out of trash. We believe this could be a great opportunity.”

Although it’s bio-based, PLA, which is categorized as a number 7 plastic, doesn’t bread down easily. It can float in fresh or salt water for a year without degrading (降解). It is also rarely recycled because like many plastics, when it’s melted down and re-formed, it doesn’t perform as well as the original version and becomes less valuable.

“It’s biodegradable and compostable, but once you look into it, it turns out that it can take up to 100 years for it to rot away in a landfill,” Chang said. “In reality, it still creates a lot of pollution. We want to make sure that when we do start producing PLA on the million-tons scale, we will know how to deal with it.”

While the researchers focused on PLA for the study, they hope to apply the work to polyethylene terephthalate (PET) (涤纶树脂), which is more common than PLA and has a similar chemical structure and present a bigger waste problem. They have filed a temporary patent and are working further optimize (优化) the process. The researchers are also looking into other applications for the upcycling method.

    12. What can the method help do according to paragraph 1?

    A. Solve financial crisis.

    B. Change waste into wealth.

    C. Control plastic production

    D. Determine 3D printing skills

    13. What does Yu-Chung Chang think of the method?

    A. Promising B. Unrealistic

    C. Imaginable D. Common

    14. Which of the following is a feature of number 7 plastics?

    A. Invaluable to recycle B. Easy to deal with

    C. Hard to break down D. Difficult to sort out.

    15. What is the text mainly about?

    A. Applications for an upcycling method.

    B. A better method to break down plastic

    C. 3D printing with newly found materials

    D. A new way to turn plastic into valuable products.

    根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。

My students frequently ask me how I planned out my career to become president of Fidelity Investments. I always tell them, “There was no grand plan; I backed into my career one step at a time.” In this tough economy and ever-changing world, it is more important than ever to smartly evaluate each step in your career. To prepare for whatever surprises lie ahead, try to make choices today that will maximize your options in the future. ____16____

Gaining transferable (可转移的) knowledge begins with the choices you make at school. You want your education to provide you with the necessary skills and expertise to succeed in a wide variety of jobs. ____17____ I favor those that involve extensive writing, rigorous analysis, or quantitative skills.

Once you have finished your formal education, search for jobs that will allow you to further expand your transferable knowledge—to help you find your next job. Let’s say you take a job putting together airplane leases. Within a few years, you could become the world’s expert on the subject. ____18____ By contrast, if you take a job that will expand your computer programming skills, you can greatly boost your options for later steps in your career.

Remember gaining transferable knowledge is only one piece of the puzzle. ____19____ As a saying goes, “Organizations don’t hire people. People hire people.” The more people you know, the more people will think of you when a job pops open—even when it is not publicly advertised.

Of course, you can build your network to some degree without changing jobs. ____20____ But this sort of event-driven networking pales in comparison with the deep bonds you can develop with your colleagues by working, communicating, and traveling with them.

    A. You can make yourself more attractive.

    B. Gain transferable expertise and form close bonds with your colleagues.

    C. Your next step should help you expand your web of personal relationships.

    D. This later helped me evaluate and start business units throughout the world.

    E. You can attend conferences or participate in committees at trade associations.

    F. This means that you need to make smart choices about the courses you will follow.

    G. However, this narrow expertise probably won’t help you in any other line of work.

    第二节(满分25分)

        阅读下面材料, 根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段, 使之构成一篇完整的短文。

If there was one thing that Ellen Rafferty hated more than driving, it was driving in the rain. This evening, on her way back from work, Ellen saw a little child standing by the side of the road in the pouring rain. So she hit the brakes sharply, and pulled over by the side of the road next to the child.

It was a little boy, maybe four or five, and he was shaking and hugging himself. As soon as he saw Ellen, his face brightened. “Hello!” he said, “Are you my mommy?”

“No,” Ellen said in the icy rain. “I’m not! What are you doing here? Where are your parents?”

“Oh,” the boy said disappointingly. “I don’t know where my mom is. She left me on the road when it was raining, and I think she must be looking for me.”

“What’s your name? Where do you live?”

“I’m David. I live at the Doris Farmer Institute for Children.”

“The orphanage(孤儿院)?” asked Ellen. “But that is far!” Just then, there was a terrible flash of lightning and even more rain poured down as thunder rolled across the sky. “Come on,” Ellen said. “I’m taking you home. I’ll call the orphanage to come and fetch you.” Ellen took the boy home.

She didn’t quite know what to do with him, so she turned on a heater and wrapped him with a blanket. Then she called the orphanage and told them that she found one of their children, who named David, on the road. But the woman on the phone said it was too late and they couldn’t come to fetch him.

Sighing, Ellen hung up the phone and looked at the boy. At the same time, her cat Gandalf walked in and rubbed himself against Ellen’s legs. Ellen picked the cat up and kissed his head. “Come on, my baby,” she said softly, “Mommy’s gonna feed you...” When she looked up, she was shocked by the longing in David’s eyes,
