    Unusual Libraries Around the World

There are 2.7 million libraries spreading across the globe, and while there are many beautiful ones, there are also a number of unique ones.

Haskell Free Library and Opera House, Quebec, Canada and Vermont, US

The Haskell Free Library and Opera House, a special library spanning two countries, is stationed on the border between Canada and the United States and serves people from both countries. The main entrance is on the American side, but the majority of collection of the books are in Canada. There's even an official American-Canada borderline running right across the library's floor.

It witnesses different authors add their works to the collection that will not be available for reading until 2114.

    Seashore Library, Qinhuangdao, China

Quietly sitting on an isolated(孤零零的)stretch of beach of Qinhuangdao in northern China, the Seashore Library has been called the world's loneliest library. People have to walk across the sand to reach the doors. The building is designed to promote people's connection with ocean, so the main reading room features a layered design to ensure that everyone has a good view of the sea.

    Bibliotheca Alexandrina, Alexandria, Egypt

Bíbliotheca Alexandrina is considered as a revival(复兴)of an ancient library in the Alex-andria 2,300 years ago or so. Characterized by its circular, tilting form, the building spans 160 meters in diameter(直径)and reaches up to 32 meters in height, while also diving some 12 meters into the ground.

Mr. Scold,77 years old, came to me for his blood pressure reading of 190/80. He claimed he hadn't changed any of his medicine. During the appointment with him, I found an interesting detail—a few months ago, he had received a subscription(订阅)to a national newspaper.

Rather than think about growing the prettiest roses in town, Mr. Scold began to worry about mad cow disease, global trade wars and more he learned from the newspaper. With his new and vast circle of concern, his blood pressure was through the roof.

Our little three-pound brain was once busy securing bread and meat for the longest time. But now it has suddenly become aware of massive unsolvable problems, from a large asteroid (小行星)that nearly missed the earth, to the man-made conflicts that occupy the headline news. However, no matter how predictable your daily life is, once these big problems occupy your mind, peace and good sleep will disappear.

A few years ago, in our house, we faced a very different local threat. An unwelcome visitor got into our basement—a mouse. The whole family came together to face this threat. When we finally caught the mouse, I realized that during those two days, we forgot that parts of the world were still at war and that the economy was facing headwinds.

Sometimes, maybe the little daily problems are a gift for us, ”I thought. A solvable problem draws attention away from big unsolvable problems. I felt genuinely thankful that the mouse gave me this wisdom. The clicking refrigerator noise, the overgrown weeds and my one-star reviews—I have started welcome the little annoyances, which keep my mind busy and serve as the protection against the worry of the big unsolvable issues.

I almost forgot to tell you about Mr. Scold. He cut down the daily dose(剂量)of negative information, and in a few weeks his blood pressure was back to normal.

    24. Why did Mr. Scold's blood pressure rise?

    A. He failed to grow the best roses in town.

    B. He devoted much time to the newspaper.

    C. He was exposed to a lot of negative news.

    D. He was concerned about his physical health.

    25. What effect did the experience of catching the mouse have on the author?

    A. It increased his concern about his disease.

    B. It drew his mind off the unsolvable issues.

    C. It turned his normal life totally upside down.

    D. It warned him that our daily life is predictable.

    26. What may the author advise us to do?

    A. Keep track of social concerns.

    B. Care about the elderly in need.

    C. Have regular medical check-ups.

    D. Focus on the solvable problems.

    27. Which can be the best title for the text?

    A. The gift of little daily problems

    B. The power of working as a family

    C. The pursuit of living a fulfilling life

    D. The secret to normal blood pressure

Tiny homes are gaining popularity across the US. Now Salt Lake City, Utah is building a tiny home village for people who have been homeless. The city government recently approved a project, one year after it was proposed and after many months of public input, reported Deseret News.

The village will be built on city land and rented to the nonprofit organization, The Other Side Academy, for just $1 a year. But the village will do much more than just housing people who’ve been homeless for at least a year. “The village will be a permanent, beautiful, self-reliant community for the chronic(长期的)homeless people,” Joseph Grenny, chairman of The Other Side Academy board, said during the tiny home's first public unveiling(揭幕)in August 2022.

The homes will be located on the west-side of the city and the first pilot(试点的)phase will build 85 homes that will occupy about eight acres. Of these, fifty-four will be for residents and six homes for staff, according to The Salt Lake Tribune. Each of the tiny homes will range from 280 to 400 square feet and will have a sitting area, a small kitchen with mod-ern appliances, a bedroom, and a bathroom. The furniture was donated from an architectural company. And there are plans to include community buildings like a medical clinic and a small market.

The residents will have to pay rent to stay in this village and the units will be rented for 12-months. The nonprofit will help the residents find jobs. There will be social enterprises onsite like a bakery and a charity shop. The village will also offer mental health treatment.

The city government views it as a way to reduce the cost of public care for homeless residents, to free up badly needed shelter space, and to create a way to provide secure housing for the underserved. It's also hoped that the project will encourage more development in the city's west side.

    28. What is the main purpose of the tiny home village?

    A. To give most citizens a sense of belonging.

    B. To improve lives of the chronically homeless.

    C. To develop the city's west side in a stable way.

    D. To shelter for the temporarily homeless people.

    A. The origin of the tiny home village.

    B. The design of the tiny home village.

    C. The expense of the tiny home village.

    D. The benefits of the tiny home village.

    30. What is the tiny home village expected to do for its residents?

    A. Offer employment chances.                B. Provide free rental service.

    C. Conduct professional training.            D. Educate them on good qualities.

    31. How does the city government like building the tiny home village?

E-cigarettes are battery-operated devices that allow users to breathe in nicotine(尼古丁)without lighting a cigarette. They come in many shapes and sizes like regular cigarettes, pens, USB sticks and other everyday items.

Though e-cigarettes may be less harmful than regular cigarettes, their effect on health can still be serious. Using e-cigarettes, or vaping, has been associated with a higher risk of lung injury. E-cigarette exposure may be particularly harmful to young adults—it can harm their brain development and cause a lifelong addiction to nicotine. According to Food and Drug Administration(FDA),an increasing number of students are using e-cigarettes every year and FDA is trying to work out how to regulate using e-cigarettes.

One way to cut e-cigarette consumption is to impose(强制实行)a tax. A study by the Centre for Health Economics &Policy Studies at San Diego State University found that a $1increase in e-cigarette taxes is associated with a 14%-26%decrease in vaping among high-school students. Young people tend to be strapped, so even a small tax increase could discourage their vaping. Unexpectedly, the tax increase seems also to decrease teenage alcohol consumption. According to the study, a $1 increase in e-cigarette taxes is associated with a 10%-11%reduction in teenage excessive alcohol use. Smoking and drinking tend to go together.

Teenagers who drink are twice as likely as others to light up. In turn, raising taxes on cigarettes has been found to reduce teenage drinking.

So should lawmakers surely rush to carry out an e-cigarette tax? The answer is not so simple. Catherine Maclean, one of the study's authors, warned,“ Despite the potential of a tax increase on e-cigarettes to restrict young adults' using cigarettes, it may lead to some others switching to regular cigarettes or illegal vaping products.”

Many other ways are put forward. Some believe requiring a prescription(处方)for e-cigarettes could help as well. Another tighter regulation is also a possible answer—Britain and the Euro-pean Union regulate the amount of nicotine in e-cigarettes.

    32. How does the author lead in the topic of the text?

    A. By giving an example.                 B. By making a comparison.

    C. By giving a definition.                 D. By making an assumption.

    33. What can we know about e-cigarettes?

    A. It is hardly addictive to new smokers.

    B. It can help develop teenagers' thinking.

    C. It is increasingly accepted by teenagers.

    D. It can deepen regular smokers 'addiction.

    34. What does the underlined word “strapped” in paragraph 3 mean?

    A. Feeling grateful.                     B. Lacking confidence.

    C. Showing strong passion.               D. Having little money.

    35. What is Maclean's attitude to the e-cigarette tax?

    A. Objective.        B. Doubtful.         C. Favorable.        D. Critical.

It is never easy to cope with all the unwanted bullying(恐吓)even when you have done nothing wrong.   36   Keep the following tips in mind to stop the situation from getting worse.

37 When bullies confront you, it may be hard to stay calm, but this is key to ignoring them. Avoiding showing emotions that you are upset or feel hurt discourages the bully. When you do not react to what they say or do, they start to lose interest in you. And they will naturally stop bothering you.

Ask them to stop. If walking away doesn't work, tell the bully to stop in a calm, unemotíonal voice. Sometimes when we do not speak up for ourselves, the bullies may think of us as easy targets and continue with their behavior.  38

Be accompanied. If you are with your friends, or if you are in the company of someone, it is least likely that the bully will disturb you.39 That is not asking you to make a huge circle of friends. Sometimes, all it takes is one loyal friend who will stay by you no matter what happens.

Talk to someone you trust about the bullying,  40  . Being the target of bullying is not your fault and you don't have to go through it alone. Your friends, family members, teachers , and school counselors do not want this for you. Tell them what's going on so they can

    help you and support you.

    A.  Be calm and avoid reacting,

    A. Know what to say to the bully.

    B. Bullies usually hunt for people who are alone.

    C. Keeping the bullying n secret is what the bully wants.

    D. Furthermore, there is no point in talking openly about bullying.

    E. But doing nothing in return will only result in more intense bullying.

    F. However, raising our voice or responding angrily can make things worse.

Frank Mason opened a new art gallery. He intended to use the gallery to showcase the best artworks from local artists, many of whom deserved to be more well-known. He hanged a highly detailed landscape by Sheila, his favorite artist. It was valuable as she had disappeared several years ago.

A few years later, Frank had grown his gallery into a business. One cold day, Frank stood at the window and watched the strong winds send snow down the street outside. He noticed a woman standing outside. Snowflakes covered her shoulders. He opened the door and greeted her. The woman shook her head. “I haven’t got any money. I just wanted to get out of the snow for a bit. w Frank felt bad for her being stuck out in the cold.

Do you like art?” he asked. “I love art. Unfortunately, I can only afford to visit free galleries. n The lady quickly spoke out a few names. Frank was surprised to hear she loved many of the same little-known artists he did. He would never expect this poor woman to have such a good understanding of art and he noticed the woman’s hands trembled severely.

Don’t mind my shivers (颤抖),” she said, “I’ve struggled to get medication since I lost my home. w Frank felt a rush of sympathy. He showed her around the gallery and finally decided to end the tour with his favorite piece. He opened the door to the room that contained his private collection. The woman pointed to the landscape on display. “That’s mine,” she said “I painted that. ”

What?” Frank was shocked. The woman showed Frank her social security card.

You’re one of my favorite artists. What happened to you?” Frank asked. “I developed Parkinson’s disease (帕金森病).” Sheila sighed. “I couldn’t paint anymore.” Frank offered her a job helping to care for his children and live with his family in order to cure her disease.

I played the violin and that was what I planned to do as my job. But I had an accident when I was playing basketball and hurt my hand, so I had to think of doing something              else. My              mother              wanted me to be a journalist,              but I didn’t              think it was right              for me.

In the end, I went to a film school where I studied lighting , special effects ? how to use a camera . . all that! It was there that I started to think about working in the video game industry.

People also ask me what I like best about being a video game writer. Wellthe money is good and it’s quite exciting. Just last nightfor exampleI was at a big dinner where they were giving prizes for new games. But what I love mott is the fact that I get on so well with everyone in the company. Thats what makes my job so much fun.
