When I watched Chinese athletes at the Beijing 2022 Winter Olympics and Paralympics whom I once interviewed receive the highest honor from the central government at the Great Hall of the People in Beijing on Friday, the vivid memories of them putting forth their best efforts came rushing back.

But athletes aren't the only ones that tried their best at the Games. All the organizers, volunteers and healthcare workers worked tirelessly during COVID-19-related challenges. Together they helped China to honor its promise to host streamlined, safe and splendid Games.

As athletes of the Chinese Winter Olympics and Paralympics delegations entered the hall on Friday for the gathering to honor those who made outstanding contributions to the Games, representatives of the organizers and volunteers applauded loudly. In fact, they themselves al- so deserve a round of applause because without their efforts and sacrifices, the smooth running of competitions under such difficult circumstances would have been a mission impossible.

China prepared for the Games for seven years. For China to have hosted the Winter Games on schedule was considered a huge success, but the fact that venue场馆 conditions met such exacting standards greatly exceeded many people's expectations.

Some athletes told me that they harbored some reservations about the Winter Games' closed-loop management policy before arriving in China because they feared that it might affect their freedom of movement. They then soon found out that such concerns were unnecessary as they could travel anywhere and anytime they wished within the closed loop, which is only meant to keep them safe so they can fully concentrate on competitions. Then they became even more excited to compete after conducting training sessions at venues described as the best that they have ever been. The Beijing 2022 Winter Olympics and Paralympics have left many memories. For many, the beautiful memories of peace, friendship and unity are surely among them. I think it's the best reward for the organizers and volunteers.

    C. Those hardworking organizers.  D. The joint effort of all involved in the Games.

    B. Hosting the Game on schedule.

    C. Athletes' freedom of movement.

    D. China winning so many medals.

    27. The author's mood in writing the text is ____.

    A. indifferent B. anxious C. thrilled D. calm

New research published in the journal BMJ Open Sport and Exercise Medicine indicates that men and younger adults have been less physically active during the COVID-19 lockdown.

The study, led by Anglia Ruskin University ARU and Ulster University, includes data from 911 UK adults who took part in an online survey which began on 17 March. The re- search found that 75% of UK adults had met the World Health Organization's physical activity recommendations of 150 minutes of middling physical activity or 75 minutes of vigorous剧 烈的physical activity per week, since the introduction of social distancing regulations. This is higher than previous studies carried out before the COVID-19 pandemic, which found that between 58% and 66% of the UK adult population typically meet physical activity guidelines.

The new study found that women, older adults, and those with a higher annual house- hold income were significantly more likely to meet the WHO's physical activity guidelines. This is the opposite of studies carried out before the pandemic, where men and younger adults were found to have higher levels of physical activity.

Lead author Dr Lee Smith, Reader in Physical Activity and Public Health at ARU, said, The overall levels of physical activity are higher than we were expecting. It may be that the UK public have experienced an increase in free time and used this time to be physically active. Additionally, during the early stages of the outbreak, one of the few reasons to leave home was to take part in an hour of exercise. As well as offering a reason to go outside, this may have served as a target for some people.

Typically, the proportion比例 of UK adults meeting physical activity guidelines declines with age. Therefore, there should be additional support offered to older adults to encourage them to sustain this level of physical activity post pandemic.

    28. How long does WHO recommend one exercise per week?

    A. 150 minutes of vigorous exercise.

    B. 2 hours of vigorous exercise.

    C. 2 hours and a half of medium exercise.

    D. 75 minutes of middling exercise.

    29. Who performed better in meeting the guidelines during the COVID-19 lockdown?

    A. Older adults.   B. Teenagers.  C. Younger adults.  D. Middle-aged men.

    30. What is behind the overall levels of exercise higher than expected?

    A. Higher income.     B. Added spare time.

    C. Concern for health.    D. Better education.

    31. What can we know from the last paragraph?

    A. The less freedom one has, the more he works out.

    B. The busier one gets, the more he works out.

    C. The more one earns, the less he works out.

    D. The older one becomes, the less he works out.

    D

About 750 million people in the world do not have access to electricity at night. Solar cells provide power during the day, but saving energy for later use requires massive battery storage. Researchers from Stanford University constructed a photovoltaic 光伏发电cell that harvests energy from the environment during the day and night, avoiding the need for batteries altogether.

The device makes use of the heat leaking from Earth back into space. At night, solar cells radiate 辐射 and lose heat to the sky, reaching temperatures a few degrees below the surrounding air. The device under development uses a thermoelectric module 热电组件to generate voltage and current from the temperature difference between the cell and the air. This process depends on the thermal design of the system, which includes a hot side and a cold side.

The setup is inexpensive and, in principle, could be combined within existing solar cells. It is also simple, so construction in remote locations with limited resources is possible.

Using electricity at night for lighting requires a few watts of power. The current device generates 50 milliwatts per square meter, which means lighting would require about 20 square meters of photovoltaic area.

None of these components were specifically engineered for this purpose, said author Shanhui Fan. So, I think there's room for improvement, in the sense that, if one really engineered each of these components for our purpose, I think the performance could be better.

The team aims to optimize优化 the thermal insulation and thermoelectric components of the device. They are exploring engineering improvements to the solar cell itself to promote the radiative cooling performance without influencing its solar energy harvesting capability.

    32. What is the biggest advantage of the new solar device over the traditional one?

    A. It is light to move.

    B. It is easy to control.

    C. It collects more energy.

    D. It doesn't need battery storage.

    33. What is the meaning of the underlined word current" in paragraph 2?

    A. The movement of water in the sea.

    B. The flow of electricity through a wire.

    C. The fact of particular ideas present in people.

    D. The movement of air in a particular direction.

    34. What do we know about the photovoltaic cell from what Shanhui Fan said?

    A. It needs improving.     B. It will need much fund.

    C. It performs well enough.    D. It has no room to survive.

    35. What would be a suitable title for the text?

    A. Solar energy is a free resource

    B. The world needs lots of solar electricity

    C. Solar cells keep working long after sun sets

    D. Millions of people need electricity at night

As the cost of living rises, many people are doing everything they can to keep their outgoings to an absolute minimum wherever possible. Filling up your car has never been so unpleasant. __36__

    Keep your petrol cap closed

Petrol is a kind of liquid, and when the liquid gets too hot, itll evaporate蒸发into the air. _37__ , then the petrol will have nowhere to go. This ensures that your fuel stays in the car rather than running through the cap and into the air.

    Make your car lighter

This one might seem obvious, but the lighter your car is, the less work the engine has to do. __38_. This is not suggesting that everyone swap their bigger cars for something smaller, but taking out any junk in your car that isn't needed for that specific trip is a wise choice.

Check your tyre pressures are just right

To make your tank work efficiently, you need the rest of your motor to be too. A great place to start is with your tyres. Tyre rolling resistance, which is the effort required to keep a tyre rolling as you're driving, counts for around 15% of all fuel consumption. __39__ . Not only does it mean you'll be driving safely, but you'll also be saving fuel.

    __40__

Cutting out the engine altogether whenever you can is a good way to go. If you're stuck in traffic, or you've been stationary for longer than a minute or so, then turn your engine off. Leaving your car running even while not moving will burn through fuel quite quickly. Not only that, but it's also bad for the environment.

    A. Turn off the engine

    B. Be smooth on the gas

    C. If your cap is extremely tight

    D. However much fuel your car consumes

    E. The heavier the vehicle is, the more fuel it uses

    F. Here are some tips on how to keep petrol costs down while you drive

    G. This consumption is why it's important to keep your tyre pressure normal
