It was a week after my mom had passed away and I didn't know how to go on with life. So when I received an email from a friend about a race benefiting cancer research, I ignored it. It seemed to prick my heart, as cancer was the disease that had taken my mother away from me.
But something about my friend's words -- “I can help organize the whole thing” --stuck with me. I felt obliged (有义务的)to agree. In the weeks to come, I managed to re-enter the world of the living. I checked our team's website daily, feeling proud each time a donation ticked up our total. I knew my mom would have wanted it that way. She was the type who never got defeated. It was this very spirit that helped me get by.
When the race ended, I noticed the runners all had one thing in common: There were big smiles on their faces. They made it look so rewarding and effortless. I wanted in.
So I enrolled in another race two months later. Considering I could barely run a mile, it was ambitious. But my friend and I made a training plan so I wouldn't come in last. I followed it religiously and didn't let anything get in my way.
Running up and down the city's hills, I was flooded with memories. I had lived there after college and my mother had visited often. I passed Bloomingdale's, recalling the time she and I had gotten into a screaming argument there.
I was about to beat myself up when I remembered what Mom had said afer her diagnosis of cancer. “I don't want you to feel guilty about anything. ” Her paper-thin hands had held me tightly. A weight lifted from my shoulders.
When the race day arrived, I gave it my all for my mom and for all she had taught me and continued to teach me. As I ran, whenever I felt like slowing down, I pictured her cheering me on.
Crossing the finish line, I was filled with her love and a sense of peace.
    29. Why did the author ignore the email in the beginning?
    A. She felt it hard to finish the race.
    B. She had no time to join in the event.
    C. She thought tho research meaningless.
    D. She was reminded of her mother's death.
    30. What mainly helped the author recover from her mom's death?
    A. The company of her friends.
    B. The inspiration from her mom.
    C. The pleasure in going for a run.
    D. The success in organizing an event.
    31. Which of the words can best describe the author's mom?
    A. Considerate and polite.
    B. Brave and humorous.
    C. Strong-willed and caring.
    D. Outgoing and patient.
    32. What might be the best title for the passage?
    A. How I Got Healed in Running B. The Loss of Sweet Memories
    C. What Matters Most in Running D. The Rewards of Great Friendship
    C
Plants do not listen to the radio. But a team of researchers in Greece recently found a way to turn lemons into very small "radio stations" that can broadcast information about their trees’ moisture (水分)content to a smartphone--the first step toward creating what the researchers call an "Internet of plants. "
Scientists had previously attached sensors to trees to measure their water use, but "no other team had created a simple wireless radio network among plants, sending information while using only a little electricity and costing just a few dollars, " says project leader Aggelos Bletsas, a professor of electrical and computer engineering at the Technical University of Crete.
The network consists of several basic parts: an existing FM radio station, an antenna (天线) attached to a lemon growing on a tree, a humidity (湿度) sensor in the lemon, a transistor (晶体管) connected to an antenna and an FM receiver. First, the antenna picks up the signal from the FM station, and then passes the signal to the transistor, which is adjusted by the humidity sensor. The sensor switches the transistor on and off at a rate dependent on the plant's moisture level: if the soil is wet or if the atmosphere is humid, that rate is lower; if it is dry, the rate is higher. Finally, the antenna broadcasts this information to the radio receiver on a mobile phone.
In this way, plants can tell farmers if they are thirsty. "We can Literally ‘listen' to the moisture of the plant, using our mobile FM radio with a $3. 4 sensor, "Bletsas says. "Two of these sensors for every acre on any given farm might change the way we conduct agriculture and 'understand' plants. " He notes that more sensors may be needed for the best possible results. Such real-time information could enable better control of air and soil moisture.
“Bletsas and his team are completely changing the way of environmental sensing using very simple equipment and surprisingly litter power, "says Alexandros Dimakis, an associate professor of electrical and computer engineering at the University of Texas at Austin, who was not involved in the research. "Their work could be a transformational Internet of Things technology for agriculture and for monitoring the environment. "
    33. V/hat can we learn about the radio network created by Greek researchers?
    A. It can be put in a smartphone.
    B. It forms an "Internet of plants".
    C. It uses simple technology at low cost.
    D. It broadcasts radio programs to plants.
    34. How does the humidity sensor function in the network?
    A. It keeps a balance between the humidity of the air and-the soil.
    B. It controls the transistor based on the plant's moisture level.
    C. It is attached to the radio receiver on a mobile phone.
    D. It picks up and passes signals from the FM station.
    35. What is Alexandros Dimakis' attitude to the "radio network"?
    A. Supportive.
    B. Critical.
    C. Uninterested.
    D. Doubtful.
    36. What is the purpose of the passage?
A To test whether plants can listen to the radio.
    B. To discuss the possibility of environmental sensing.
    C. To offer guidance on keeping the moisture, of plants.
    D. To introduce a new way of measuring plants' water use.
    D
Much like beauty, art is in the eve of the beholder. The artwork we are attracted to can give insight into our personality. such es whether we are too quick or too slow, calm or moody. Studies into art. preferences date back to the 1930s-most of them examining the degree to which people like or dislike different paintings. Research shows that a person's interest in art is more strongly related to certain personality traits (特征)than to social class. age. or gender.
In particular, a personality trait called "openness" is the best predictor of whether individuals are interested in art. On the other side, those who identify as "conscientious (一丝不苟的)", are often less drawn to the arts. These traits are part of the Big Five. a widely accepted personality theory based on nearly a century of research.
The model claims that each personality is made up of a combination of five core traits: openness, conscientiousness, extroversion (enjoying being with other people), agreeableness (being pleasant)and neuroticism (feeling worried and nervous). Rather than stating a person as being either thy. or outgoing, the Big Five Model believes that everyone lies somewhere between the two extremes.
Personality traits may also affect the way people visually scan art. A 2018 study tracked participants’ eye movements as they studied abstract (抽象的)artwork. The majority of participants concentrated on the upper-right part. This makes sense, as the right half of the brain is specialized for visual and spatial processing, and alco plays a significant role in processing the emotions that art draws out. However, participants who tended toward neuroticism focused on the eft side of the picture, and those with mental disease paid more attention to the bottom of the picture.
Even with the impressive amount of research into the relationship between people's personality traits end their love for art, there are still boles in the theories. For instance, some scientists claim that the Big Five Model doesn't translate across cultures and is mainly targeted toward those living in developed nations. Also, most studies have focused on two-dimensional art, like paintings, and haven't yet described differing preferences for the variety of media that exist around the world. Then there's the fact that our art preferences change over time and are informed by our ages, relationships and life experiences.
People's preferences for art are nearly as complicated as art itself. But if you're looking for a quick test of someone's general personality traits, it doesn't hurt to glance at what's hanging on their walls.
    37. What does the underlined part “art is in the eve of the beholder" in Paragraph 1imply?
    A. The value of an artwork depends on its quality and price.
    B. Whether an artwork is attractive is based on personal opinions.
    C. The preference for art is mostly influenced by one's social status.
    D. We judge an artwork based on whether it is considered beautiful.
    38. The shadowed area in each of the following pictures is the part a person focuses on when enjoying an abstract painting. According to the 2018 study, which of the following best shows how a person who feels worried sees the painting?

    39. What can be inferred from the passage about the Big Five Model?
    A. It is a system developed nearly a century ago.
    B. It may not apply to people from some countries.
    C. It strictly classifies everyone into one of the five traits.
    D. It can explain the change in our art preference overtime.
    40. What does the passage focus on?
    A. Why one likes an artwork better than others.
    B. How to discover one's art preference.
    C. How to reveal one's personality traits.
    D. What one's taste in art says about him/her.

If it doesn't work, you need to protect yourself from them. 44

Considered as an important part of Chinese culture, drinking ten can date back to about 4000 years ago. With time passing by, it gradually becomes an amazing tradition in every part of China. Due to the vast land, there exist varieties of ten, including black tea, green tea, Oolong tea, and so on.
Drinking tea enjoys great popularity in China because we Chinese believe that tea benefits people a lot. Moreover, it provides people with great opportunities where we can have friendly and harmonious communication with our friends. In this way, it can promote our friendship. Lastly, it is by means of drinking tea that we can keep some traditional manners in mind and be aware of the significance of Chinese tea culture. In this way. more foreigners will be likely to be familiar with Chinese culture.

    听力原文
    听第一段材料, 回答第1-2题。
W:Hey, Brad. You didn't take the envelope that was on the kitchen table, did you?
M: No, why? Do you want to send a letter?
W:Well, actually my new PIN number was in that envelope.
    M:You're kidding me, are you?
W:No, I'm pot. I left it here this morning.
M: Go and ask Jill. Maybe she's seen it.
    听第二段材料, 回答第3-4题。
M:Hello. Sarah. Good to see you again. Welcome to the company.
W:Thank you. I know you asked me to come in a little later on my first day, but what
time do I normally start work?
M:Well, the office opens at 8:30 and the team starts work at a 9 o'clock meeting.
    W:What happens after the meeting?
M: We take a break at 10:30. My assistant Mia makes coffee for us all. Then it's time
to call customers and make sales.
    W:That sounds good.
    听第三段材料, 回答第5-7题。
W:Hi, Frank. I heard you're going to withdraw from the speech class. Can you tell me why?
M: Well, Ms. McDaniel, I don't think I can make it. Public speaking scares me. I just can't get in front of a group and talk.
W: What is it that you fear about speaking in front of a group?
M: I am afraid I would look silly if I forget a word or say something stupid or if I shake or turn red.
W:What would happen if you did run into one of these things?
M: People would laugh at me.
W: Well. Frank, your fear is really not based on facts. I once asked my students what they would do if someone in class forgot a word or made a mistake. They said they would feel bad for the speaker for they knew they would be in the speaker's shoes some day. Does that make you feel better?
    M:Yeah, I guess.
W:I hope you'll stay in the class, and try a bit more.
    M:Okay. Thanks, Ms. McDaniel.
    听第四段材料, 回答第8-10题。
M: So, what do you want to study when you go to college, Megan?
W: I'm not sure, Mr. Sanders. My dad would be excited if I studied medicine, but that sounds too difficult. I've always been interested in art, but I'm not sure if I want to be a professional artist.
M: Well, you could study art history. That was my wife's major, you know.
W:Rcally? What did you major in?
M: Oh, I always wanted to be a businessman, so that's what I did in college. It's not for everyone, but I liked it. I wish I had taken some other classes, though. If you have a chance to learn about a bunch of different things and then make a decision, I think that would be your best bet (你最好选择).
W:That's good advice, Mr. Sanders. Thanks!
M:My pleasure. If you want to talk more, come next door anytime you want.
    W:I sure will. Thank you!

Today, I want to tell you about the Climbing Center in the heart of North Wales. It's
a good place to go, whether you're a beginner or more advanced. The Center was
started in 1952 by Peter Evans, the mountaineer. The Climbing Center shares the site with a management training college. This is open from March to November, but the Climbing Center itself only runs courses from March until September, although accommodation for climbers is available in the winter months. The Climbing Center has thirty twin-bedded rooms and ten single rooms providing accommodation for up to 70 people.
I tried a four-day course which I believe was good value at 280 pounds. The price includes all food and accommodation, equipment and instruction. However, you do need to take your own walking shoes. We spent most of our time on the mountainside learning different things. On the first day we learned how to read a map and went out
