Because of the “Yunnan Elephant”, many people have developed a strong interest in elephants, and it has also aroused a heated discussion about how man and nature should share the earth and live in harmony. In this issue of “Weekend Cinema”, Yingda has brought four documentaries related to this:
    The Secret Life of Elephants
The Secret Life of Elephants is a BBC nature documentary series following the lives of elephants and the work of the conservation charity Save the Elephants in Samburu National Reserve, Kenya. It was first released in the United Kingdom on BBC One in January 2009 to 4.2 million viewers. The team follow the dramatic and emotional stories of 500 plus individually known elephants.
    Penguin Town
The series is filmed in Simon’s Town, South Africa, where these adorable African penguins wander close by to people, strolling down the sidewalk, passing sunbathers on the beach. The series follows various penguin couples. With great humor, their love stories are told, and you follow the adventures of these penguin couples starting families and having chicks.
     Seven Worlds, One Planet
Millions of years ago incredible forces tore apart the Earth’s crust(地壳) creating seven extraordinary continents, each with its own distinct climate, its own distinct terrain(地形) and its own unique animal life. Seven Worlds, One Planet explores the natural wonders that give each of our continents its distinct character. Following the animals that have made these environments their home, it discovers amazing wildlife stories that uncover what makes each of these seven worlds unique.
Bears on Top of the World
This moving film reveals the differing fortunes of a mother polar bear, a mother bear and their newborn babies, in a rapidly changing world. This is a remarkable story of how bears, ever intelligent , are adapting to a warming world.
    21. If you are interested in documentaries with funny languages, which film do you prefer?

    C. Seven Worlds, One Planet D. Bears on Top of the World

Jordan Mitter has been spending weekends teaching seniors in New York how to use technology for years, but he never expected he would be streaming(直播) a class about smartphones and computers on smartphones and computers.
The Manhattan resident has patiently taught texting, emailing and video chatting to dozens of seniors for years, beginning when his grandparents first got smartphones. Teaching them how to use apps and send messages inspired the tech-savvy(懂科技知识的) teen to offer his services to more older people. At age of 12, he created a formal course and started hosting free, hour-long sessions for seniors every Sunday. Immediately, he was flooded with interested participants. His course, spread out over 10 weeks, was an instant success.
But when the coronavirus hit New York City, Jordan had to end his classes. He wasn’t sure if he could move the lessons on line— it was much easier to help students understand their devices in person—but he knew the importance of keeping older folks connected online. Most of the attendees were retired or lived alone and needed to find ways to connect with family members remotely. “It gives them somewhere to be and something to do,” he said.
So he spent a week ensuring each student could use Zoom, an online video chat platform. For most of the seniors, that meant calling them individually with step-to-step instructions. Since then, online classes have been going smoothly.
His project, Mittler Senior Technology, has taught Jordan the value of making inter-generational relationships. He frequently invites his teenage friends to participate in his classes, hoping more young people will take time to help older relatives or neighbors.
“Any kid in our generation can show their grandparents how to send an email,”he said. “It’s very important to spend as much time with them as you can. ”For family members trying to help older relatives surf the Internet, Jordan has some advice. He suggests starting with basic applications, like email or texting. From there, it’s easier to learn how to navigate more complex apps and websites. “Patience is really key,”he said.
    24. What inspired Jordan Mittler to teach seniors how to use technology?
    A. His interest in technology.
    B. His ambition to become famous.
    C. His determination to fight against coronavirus.
    D. His experience of teaching his grandparents.
    25. Which of the following can best describe Jordan Mittler?
    A. Creative and modest. B. Strict and determined.
    C. Thoughtful and warm-hearted. D. Knowledgeable and humorous.
    26. What can be inferred according to Jordan Mittler in the last paragraph?
    A. Young people are quite willing to teach older relatives how to surf the Internet.
    B. Young people are trying to teach older relatives complex applications.
    C. Seniors consider it easy to learn more complex apps and websites.
    D. Young people tend to be impatient when helping older relatives with technology.
    27. What is the passage mainly about?
    A. A teen keeps seniors connected online.
    B. Seniors live a happy life.
    C. New York City is a perfect place for seniors.
    D. The Manhattan resident launched a project to deal with coronavirus.
    C
Daily life has its satisfactions. The perfect reply to a friend’s text message. The first after-work drink. The sound of another government U-turn. But do any really compare to the joy of going to sleep? That moment when all the mess disappears into the embrace of a mattress(床垫)?
Somehow we have pushed this pleasure to the back of the queue. A third of American adults report sleeping less than the recommended seven hours. Many of us feel a lack of rest.
Stressing ourselves out about a lack of sleep can make the problem worse. In his book Overcoming Insomnia and Sleep Problems, Oxford professor Colin Espie writes about “orthosomnia(完美睡眠症)”, where people are so focused with sleeping well that they become too anxious to do so. The marketing of sleeping aids adds to this.
Espie says we each have a sleep pattern that, like a shoe size, we figure out through trial and error. The research on bedtimes between 10pm and 11pm will cheer those who leave parties early and give up late-night football highlights, but it establishes no causal link. Genetically, some humans are larks(百灵鸟) and some are owls(猫头鹰); the larks may just have better cardiovascular(心血管) health. For an owl to try to fight their natural schedule, and sleep earlier, wouldn’t necessarily help.
Once we weren’t urged to sleep until we were dead. Now we are told to sleep or we’ll be dead. Taking our biology seriously suggests that Netflix should not try to compete with sleep, and the city that never sleeps is not as cool as it sounds. But nowadays sleep is becoming something that people try to excel at. About that I’m unconvinced. A good night’s sleep is a pleasure. As far as possible, it should also remain a simple one.
    28. What can satisfy us most in our daily life according to the passage?
    A. The perfect reply to a friend’s text message.
    B. The first after-work drink.
    C. The sound of another government U-turn
    D. The joy of going to sleep.
    29. What may lead to people suffering from the lack of sleep according to Colin Espie?
    A. They often leave parties early.
    B. They seldom stay up late for the football highlights.
    C. They are too concerned about having a good sleep.
    D. They have a habit to follow their natural schedule.
    30. How does Colin Espie explain a sleep pattern?
    A. By statistics B. By example
    C. By comparison D. By process
    31. What can we learn from the last paragraph?
    A. It is better to sleep like an owl.
    B. Netflix may affect our sleep.
    C. We expect the city to be sleepless nowadays.
    D. The author tries to be good at sleep.

    D
Wall-E, a popular robot from a Pixar film, has been brought to life by scientists in the form of a seed-planting robot. The A’ seedbot could wander around a desert to look for fertile(肥沃) lands. After finding one, it would send a report to researchers about its discovery. The autonomous robot could then change a once-abandoned area into a workable landscape ideal for farming.
Dubai Institute of Design and Innovation graduate Mazyar Etehadi created this robot farmer. It was a part of his graduation project with the Global Grad Show. This event presents solutions that tackle modern issues connected to the environment and society.
Etehadi said that he wished to see more plants and more greenery out there. The fresh graduate added that continuous desertification led him to develop a seed-planting robot. Later, he arrived at an innovative solution that would require less human participation.
According to a recent report, the farmer robot carries solar panels that can be charged even at night or day. In addition, the length of A’ seedbot is estimated to be 20cm long, and it could move within a 5km radius(半径). Etihadi said that it has 3D-printed legs that can travel in sandy areas to seek appropriate moisture(水分) levels. This would be a hint(迹象) for the robot to plant a seed.
Moreover, a distance sensor helps the machine relay reports to its user. The receiver on the other side can use data sent for further research. Additionally, it has a built-in collision(碰撞) avoidance system to help the robot for easy soil detection. “I think it was an easy solution to come up with, but no one had actually thought of it,” Etehadi said. He added that farmers, citizens, farming industries, and the government will benefit from the seed-planting robots.
Regarding these environment-friendly robots, Tadeu Caravieri of Global Grad Show said such creations would continue to appear in future programs. He believes that these robots will have a “big impact”. As another report says, because of those innovative robot designs, the year of AI has clearly arrived in today’s world.
    32. Why does the author mention robot Wall-E in paragraph 1?
    A. To highlight the importance of looking for environment protection.
    B. To arouse the interest of the readers.
    C. To prove the possibility of finding all fertile lands.
    D. To show the popularity of the film.
    33. What does the underlined word “tackle” mean in paragraph 2?
    A. handle. B. prevent. C. strengthen. D. protect.
    34. What do we know about the A’ seedbot?
    A. It is developed by farmers.
    B. It solves all the problems existing before.
    C. It relies on frequent human participation.
    D. It is partly 3D-printed.
    35. What can be inferred from the passage about the future of the A’ seedbot?
    A. Promising. B. Concerning.
    C. Unclear. D. Costly.

“What will we be singing for the contest this year?” a student from my high school choir,a singing team, asked eagerly.
I hesitated this moment. “I was thinking,” I said, “maybe we’ll skip the contest and just work hard on the concerts this year. ”
    “NO!” the kids protested.
“We’ve got to go to contest!”
    “In Class A. ”
    “It’s tradition!”
This was true. Awards lined the front wall of the music room from the past successes of large, talented classes. But a change in educational policies, with an emphasis on academics, had reduced my choir to a mere thirty-two students. My section leaders had graduated or been forced to drop music classes, leaving me with young, inexperienced kids who couldn’t read music, couldn’t hold their parts, and could sing only a simple melody or song.
“Maybe we could enter Class B this year,” I suggested, knowing even that would be a near-impossible mission.
“No!” the kids screamed. “Class A!”
I shook my head. “Class A is extremely difficult. ”
“We can do it!” they shouted. “We can do it!”
“I’ll have to think about it,” I said, hoping their enthusiasm would die off in a couple of weeks.
But that didn’t happen. If anything, the class became more fixed. Every day they begged and begged and they insisted. Because I had to protect their self-pride I couldn’t tell them they weren’t good enough. My efforts to prevent their eagerness, by showing them a difficult piece of music from the contest list, simply ended with, “It’s okay, Mrs. Pliszka, we’ll get it. ”

    注意:
    1. 续写词数应为150左右;
    2. 请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
I struggled to make a decision.

When the contest day finally arrived, the kids felt ready to take on the world!

Finally one morning I walked into class. “Kids!” I demanded. “We are entering the contest in Class A...” The rest of my sentence was lost in screams of delight and applause. As the weeks progressed , each morning the kids practised singing, worked on reading music, learned musical terms, practiced rhythm and marked changes, prepared concert music, and went over and over the three contest numbers.

When the contest day finally arrived, the kids felt ready to take on the world! As my choir went on the stage,I mouthed, “Smile!” They looked confident. I took a deep breath, and we began. They performed masterfully. Two very long hours later the results were posted. I stood frozen, staring at the list in disbelief: a First Place award with the highest marks of all.All around kids were screaming and embracing. Warm tears wet my cheeks.I was surrounded by kids who had a dream—kids who refused to give up—kids who taught me to never doubt the possibility of success for any student or any class ever again.

M:Could you tell me what the meaning of the word is?
    W:I don’t know. Why don’t you ask Ann? She’s a walking dictionary.
    Text 2
M:Susan, you haven’t come to the health club for quite a few days!
W:I was in the library studying for my final exams. Now, they’re all over, and here I am again.
    Text 3
M:Can you show me your driver’s license?
W:But I wasn’t speeding. Why did you pull me over?
M:We’re stopping cars to see if the drivers have current licenses.
    W:OK. Wait a minute.
    Text 4
    W:Good afternoon, Paper Museum.
M:Hello. Could you tell me your opening hours for Saturday?
W:Yeah. We’re open from ten in the morning to five in the afternoon.
    M:Thanks.
    Text 5
M:May I speak to Miss Kelly, please?
W:Sorry, but she is out for a walk right now.
M:I see. What time will she be back?
W:She’ll be back around 8:30. But she’ll have a half-hour meeting first. I’ll have her call you after the meeting.
M:That’s nice. I’ll be waiting for her call. Thank you.
    Text 6
W:Hey, will you get home tonight in time to watch That’s Incredible?
M:I hope so. That’s my favorite program.
W:I’ll be watching it too. Well, if your meeting goes too late, give me a call and I’ll record it.
M:Thanks. I may do that. I might have to miss it tonight because my boss decides on our business trip to Shanghai tomorrow. Then I’ll have to stay late to get ready.
W:Oh, I hate traveling like that.
    M:It’s not that bad.
    Text 7
W:Would you like to go out for lunch with me today?
M:I’ d like to, but I have to go to the bank.
W:What do you have to do at the bank?
M:I have to see how much money I have in my account. I need to pay for the repairs tomorrow.
W:Why don’ t you do that online? It will be much quicker.
M:I don't know how to check my account online.
W:All you have to do is download the app of the bank.
M:Sounds easy. But the bank closes early today, and I have to be there before they close.
W:Online banking never closes. You can check your account 24 hours a day.
    Text 8
W:Hey, John. Can you do me a favor?
    M:Sure, I’d be happy to. What’s wrong?
W:Well, I’ve been having a lot of trouble with my computer lately. I’m not very good at computers, so I don’t really know what to do.
M:I see. What is going wrong?
W:It keeps shutting down whenever I open up a certain program.
M:Uh-oh. That doesn’t sound very good. You might have a virus (病毒). Have you had your computer checked for viruses?
W:Viruses? No, I haven’t. Would you mind checking my computer for viruses?
M:Sure, I have a program on a disk that will help. Why don’t I go home and get it, then we can meet up and try using it on your computer?
W:That sounds great. I really appreciate your help! Now, I am going home waiting for you.
    Text 9
W:Jason, I heard you just came back from Mexico. Did you go there for sightseeing?
M:No. I went there with my friend Danny. I studied at a Spanish language school there while Danny did some tours.
    W:How is the school?
M:Well, it’ s a small-sized school. But its experienced, friendly teachers provide high-quality teaching for students of all levels.
W:So was the study fun there?
M:Absolutely. The classes were not very challenging. We studied in the morning and enjoyed the beach in the afternoon. And in the evening we joined cultural activities.
W:What did you usually do on weekends?
M:On weekends, we explored Mayan sites and old towns.
W:Oh, it sounds like you really had a great learning experience there.
M:You can say that again. So do you speak any foreign languages?
W:No. But I plan to learn fashion design in Paris one day, so I’ m considering learning French.
M:I can teach you French if you like.
    W:Oh, that's great! Thanks!
