I. Teaching aims and learning objectives

By the end of the lesson, students should be able to:

1. master the usage of key words, phrases and sentences;

2. compare the life on the Earth with that on Mars ;

3. know the importance of protecting the Earth.

II. Teaching contents

1. New words and phrases: planet, crowded, polluted, rapid, increase, passenger, uncomfortable, oxygen, tasty, specially, float, compare, interplanetary, network, challenging, rapidly, all over again, at a/the speed of, in the form of, compare to/with

2. New structures: Food would most probably in the form of pills and would not be so tasty.

The gravity on Mars is only about three-eighths of that on the Earth.

Compared with life on the Earth, people would have more space.

Step 1 Lead-in

Show some beautiful pictures and our own planet Earth.

Step 3 Presentation

T: Why will we leave our own planet Earth?

S: Earth is becoming more and more crowded and polluted because of the rapid increase in population.

more and more 加强程度，表示越来越……

The structure is “comparative + comparative”.

e.g. younger and younger, faster and faster, better and better, more and more careful, more and more comfortable

T: Let’s make some sentences to praise your partner with this structure.

2. too + adj. + to do/... so ... that ... can’t ..../... adj. + enough to do …

T: How long does the spacecraft need to get to Mars at present?

S: It takes months. Because our spacecraft are too slow to carry large numbers of people to Mars at present.

too + adj.+ to do/... so ... that ... can’t ..../... adj. + enough to do …

e.g. Sandy太年轻了而不能去上学。

Sandy is too young to go to school.

 Sandy is so young that she can’t go to school.

Sandy is not old enough to go to school.

3. at the speed of

T: How long does the spacecraft need to get to Mars in the future?

S: By the year 2100, the journey might only take about 20 minutes in spacecraft that travel at

the speed of light.

 e.g. The speed of the light is 300,000,000 meter per second.

The cars are driving at high speed.

We should move at the speed of 100 kilometers per hour.

Step 4 Analysis

1. Life on Mars

T: How many aspects does the article tell us about the life on Mars? What are they?

 S: Five aspects. They are about food, gravity, houses, free time and schools.

T: Describe life on Mars from the five aspects.

    Food: Food would most probably in the form of pills and would not be so tasty.

Gravity: The gravity on Mars is only about three-eighths of that on the Earth.

Houses: Compared with life on the Earth, people would have more space.

Free time: Robots would do most of their work so that they could have more time to relax.

Schools: Every student would have a computer connected to an interplanetary network.

3. Language points

(1) in the form of “以……的形式”

—Would you like the food in the form of pills?

—Of course not. I hate eating pills so far.

(2) three-eighths “八分之三”, 基数词表示分子，序数词表示分母。如果分子大于1，分母要用复数形式。

  Three-fifths（五分之三）of the students in my class are girls.

(3) compared with/to“与……相比较”

     —I compared the first report with the second.

—You did a good job.

(4) so that “以便”，表目的

   We should plant more trees so that we can have a better environment.

  (5) have a computer connected to … 过去分词短语作后置定语

     —What do you read in your spare time?

—The books written by Han Han are my favourite.

Step 5 Discussion

1. Could humans survive on mars without water, oxygen or food?

2. Can you think of some suggestions to protect the Earth?

【设计意图：让学生了解火星上的恶劣环境及人类生存的基本条件，通过讨论让学生增强保护地球的意识。】

V. Homework

1. Remember the new words, phrases and sentences.

2. Retell the article.
