If you are in Africa. Suddenly, a group of spots streaks past you. What was it? It may be a cheetah, the fastest animal on land. It can run up to 70 miles per hour, which is faster than most cars moving on the highway!
The cheetah is famous for speed. Though this animal is a cat, its paws are much more like a dog’s paws. The paws allow the cheetah to make quick turns. A cheetah also has long legs that help it take big steps. It can jump as far as 20 feet in one leap(跳跃)! Even the cheetah’s backbone helps it move quickly. The backbone acts as a spring (弹簧), moving the cheetah forward with sudden burst (迸发) of energy. Although the cheetah can run fast, it cannot run for long distance. It uses its energy quickly and becomes tired. If the cheetah cannot catch its dinner in a hurry, it will have to rest a while before trying again.
A cheetah is also made to be a great hunter. It has sharp eyesight. A cheetah can see other animals up to three miles away. Good eyesight helps the cheetah find its food so it can plan an attack. A cheetah’s coat is also very useful. The coat is light brown with black spots. It allows a cheetah to hide in the tall, brown grass in Africa. Other animals do not see it hiding, so a cheetah can get close to rabbits, birds, and other animals quietly.
Today the cheetah is in danger. Parts of Africa are being turned into farms. This change forces the cheetah and other animals to find new places to live, which is not always easy. Cheetahs are also being hunted by other animals such as lions and hyenas. However, zookeepers and wildlife experts are trying to save the cheetah. Maybe with their help, cheetahs will grow larger in number.
29.Suddenly, a group of spots streaks past you. “streaks” means “________”.
A.searches for food B.gets close quietly
C.moves with great speed D.plans a sudden attack
30.The cheetah’s coat is MOST useful because it ________.
A.protects the cheetah from the sun B.helps the cheetah hide in the grass
C.keeps the cheetah cool after a long run D.lets the cheetah move with great speed
    31.Read this chart.
    When:

    Then:
Cheetahs use their energy very quickly.

Cheetahs stop to rest if they do not catch their prey.
    Lions and hyenas hunt cheetahs.

The chart shows some information from the article. Which can be put in the empty box?A.Cheetahs hide in the tall, brown grass. B.People in Africa hunt lions and hyenas.
C.Wildlife experts send cheetahs to the zoo. D.The number of cheetahs becomes smaller.
32.“Speedy and Spotty” is a good title for the article because ________.

    (2022·江苏盐城)
What are the astronauts’ bedrooms like in a space station? Do water drops fly away when astronauts have a drink? If you have lots of questions about life in space, you should check out the latest lecture (讲座) from space given by three Chinese astronauts (宇航员).
Zhai Zhigang, Wang Yaping and Ye Guangfu are working on Chin’s Tiangong space station now. They gave a science lecture 400 kilometers above Earth on Dec. 9. Millions of students watched it and learned many amazing science facts. Let’s take a look at some of them.
    Use it or lose it
The human body grows with the pull of Earth’s gravity (重力). But in space, our bones and muscles (肌肉) don’t need to support our body’s weight. This will cause bone and muscle loss. NASA says that astronauts can lose up to 20 percent of their muscles after just a couple of weeks. That is dangerous for astronauts because they will be too weak to work.
Astronauts have different ways to prevent this. During the lecture, Zhai introduced a special uniform Ye was wearing. It’s called a “penguin suit”. There are many elastic bands (弹力带) inside the suit. Wearing it, astronauts use their muscles to stretch (拉伸) the bands. This keeps their muscles strong.
Wang also showed students how she walked on a treadmill (跑步机) and rode a bicycle. Astronauts exercise with these tools every day to prevent muscle loss.
    Space water is different
During another experiment, Wang made a water film (膜). Then she added more water drops onto the film to make it a water ball. This can never happen on Earth. Why?
We need to first understand the surface tension (表面张力) of water. Surface tension is like a “skin” of water. The “skin” is there because water molecules (分子) are drawn to each other. One example on Earth is that some bugs can “walk on water”. Most of the time, gravity is too strong and it breaks the “skin”. But with zero gravity in space, the “skin” stays strong and the water ball will not break.
Water in space acts differently from water on Earth in other ways. For example, water will not flow downward (向下流动) if you try to pour it into a cup. That’s why astronauts usually drink water through straws (吸管) in sealed (密封的) bags. If astronauts cry, the tears will stay on their eyeballs instead of falling down. They have to wipe (擦拭) them away!
33.What can we learn about the lecture from space?
A.It is a part of the astronauts’ daily work.
B.It took place in the International Space Station.
C.It is one of the astronauts’ ways to ask for help.
D.It took place 400 kilometers above Earth.
34.Why might astronauts become weak in space?
A.Because their bodies will stop growing.
B.Because they have to work for long hours.
C.Because they might lose some of their muscles.
D.Because their muscles have to support more weight.
35.What did Zhai show the students during the lecture?
    A.A treadmill. B.The “penguin suit”.
C.Earth’s gravity. D.A special elastic band.
36.Which word can best describe the lecture?
    A.Eye-opening. B.Dangerous. C.Boring. D.Careless.

    (2022·江苏盐城)
One day some friends came to me and said, “We’re going to Africa to do business. Why don’t you come with us? We’ll all be rich after this journey!”
How stupid I was! I had an easy, comfortable life in Brazil, but, of course, I agreed. And so in 1659, I went to sea again.
At first, all went well, but then there was a terrible storm. For twelve days the wind and the rain didn’t stop. We lost three men in the sea, and soon the ship had holes in its sides. “We’re all going to die this time,” I said to myself. Then one morning one of the sailors saw land. but the next minute our ship hit some sand just under the sea. The ship could not move and we were really in danger now. The sea was trying to break the ship into pieces, and we had very little time. Quickly, we put a boat into the sea and got off the ship. But the sea was very dangerous and our little boat could not live for long in that wild water.
Half an hour later the angry sea turned our boat over and we were all in the water. I looked round for my friends, but I could see nobody. I was alone.
That day I was lucky, and the sea carried me to the shore. I could not see the land, only mountains of water all around me. Then, suddenly, I felt the ground under my feet. Another mountain of water came, pushed me up the beach, and I fell on the wet sand.
At first I was very thankful to be alive. Slowly, I got to my feet and went higher up the shore. From there, I looked out to sea. I could see our ship, but it was broken and there was nobody near it.
There was nobody in the water. All my friends were dead. I was alive, but in a strange wild country, with no food, no water, and no gun.
It was dark now and I was tired. I was afraid to sleep on the shore. Perhaps there were wild animals there. So I went up into a tree and I stayed there all night.
37.Where was Robinson before he fell into the sea?

(2022·江苏南京)One day you open the fridge and find some moldy (发霉的) food. But before you can throw it away, your mother stops you. She doesn’t want to waste food. She cuts off the moldy part and eats the rest. Is it safe to do this?
Mold can grow on almost all kinds of food. Mold is usually green, white, black or grey. Mold makes food soft and changes its color. Moldy food tastes quite bad.
If you find mold in soft food, just throw it away. Soft food, such as bread, tomatoes or hot dogs usually has water. This allows mold to easily grow below its surface (表面) . Bacteria (细菌) can also grow along with it.

It’s OK to cut the moldy parts out of hard food and eat the rest. But if the food is totally covered with mold, you should still throw it away.

(2022·江苏南京)The Earth Day was set up in 1970. Now, it is a worldwide event because the Earth is facing a lot of problems. Do you know why? Let’s listen to what the Earth says.
    Earth Says
    I am the mother Earth,
Filled with water, air, and life,
Humans, trees, birds, water, animals, and wildlife.
I spin and turn all year round the orbit,
To give you all the seasons and climate.
You people use my land, air, water, and soil,
But keep on filling it with litter and allowing it to spoil.
I provide you with air, food, and home to live,
With greedy lust, you destroy the nature I give,
And plot your own nature’s death.
The air you fill with smoke,
    Makes my breath choke.
You make my heart fill with strife,
By cutting down the green forests,
And pushing up the green-house gases.
What was once a clean sea and pure soil,
Is now all barren, clogged with waste and oil.
How long can I stand the trouble?

(2022·江苏·南京)Napoga is a 12-year-old girl in Ghana, Africa. It is hard for her family to get clean water. Every morning, she leaves home at half past five to get clean water for her family in a village far away. It takes her six hours to get enough clean water for daily cooking and drinking. She has no time to go to school or to play with her friends. Millions of people in the world are like Napoga. They can’t get enough clean water to keep healthy.
Earth Day is April 22. But on all other days, we must also remember it. The water we use is the most important natural resource(自然资源)on the earth.
Water covers 70 percent of the earth’s surface(表面).But most of that is sea water. We can’t use it for very many things. Fresh water covers only one percent of the earth’s surface.
You probably feel lucky that your life isn’t as hard as Napoga’s, But that doesn’t mean you don’t have to worry about water. We all face serious water problems. One of them is water pollution. All kinds of things from cars, factories, farms and homes make our rivers, lakes, and oceans dirty. Polluted water is very bad for people to drink. And dirty water is bad for fish, too. Now, thirty-four percent of all kinds of fish are dying out.
How do cars and factories make our water dirty? First, they pollute the air. Then, when it rains, the rain water comes down and makes our drinking water dirty. Dirty rain, called acid rain(酸雨), is also bad for plants, animals and buildings.
Scientists say that in 30 years, more than half of the people in the world won’t have enough clean water. We have to learn how to save more water for ourselves and our children. Here is some advice for saving water.

Sam was eleven. His last name was Beaver. He was strong for his age and had black hair and dark eyes like an Indian. No matter (无论) where you are, you can see birds. Here are some birdwatching tips that make it possible to find and get a good look at more birds.
    Keep ________
Birds are easily startled (受惊) by loud noises and will fly to cover. It is almost impossible to get close to a bird, because birds hear much better than human beings do. By making less noise, you can get much closer to a bird. A new bird watcher, when seeing an especially beautiful bird, will shout: “WOW! LOOK AT THAT! IT’S RIGHT OVER THERE!” However, the same message can be whispered. The result is that the bird is more likely to stay there for everyone to see, for a long look.
    Avoid sudden movements
Just as loud noises startle birds, so does a sudden movement. Getting close to a bird means following it, moving slowly. A sudden movement, even when swinging your binoculars up to your eyes, can make a bird nervous enough to fly away.
    Be ________
Some birds are always flying here and there, some are jumping up and down. It takes long time to wait for the birds to show themselves. A sparrow jumping around in a bush will finally move into a place where you can get a good look.
    Try pishing
Sometimes, no matter how slowly and quietly you move, you just cannot get a good look at the bird. When this happens, bird watchers try a skill called pishing. A low whistled pish by blowing air through your closed teeth can attract (吸引) small birds to the watching place. Here’s how to pish: Clench (咬紧) your teeth, open your lips and whisper the word pish.
Just go outside and look around. Use these tips to see more birds and have fun!

You may have been in the situation that you knew someone had trouble but didn’t know what to say or do. There is one solution that is always correct. Listen, listen, and listen.
Listening is the greatest gift you can give someone —especially who is having a difficult time. Listening is more important than any words of comfort. Don’t provide with advice or stories of your own. You can choose to listen. It could be 5 or 10 minutes, an hour, or even all the night.
I have done this for many people in trouble. What I notice is that when they talk with no interruption(打断), they often think more and more clearly.
My mother had been ill in hospital for eight years when a volunteer encouraged her to talk. At first, she didn’t like it, and the volunteer continued encouraging and supporting her. She talked and talked, not at once, but in many different ways. Later, the doctor noticed she was not sad any longer, she smiled and smiled. When she left hospital at the age of 45, she enjoyed herself in our family.

It was a beautiful morning. Mina the giraffe was walking on the grass. A group of zebras ran by. Mina looked at them and thought, “How beautifully zebras jump? How easily they run! Look at my walk — it is so strange!”
Then she saw an elephant by the lake. “The elephant takes water in her long nose and sprays it everywhere. She has so much fun. If I had a long nose, I would become happy like her.”
Just then a parrot came and sat on Mina’s head. “Why are you so unhappy?”
Mina stood there with a sad face and said, “They all look so good, but I am so strange.” “Why do you think so, you have your own good points, don’t you?” said the parrot.
At that moment, a lion came and said, “Mina, I need your help? My kid has climbed up a tree. Will you bring him down?”
“Of course!” Mina stretched her long neck up and gently brought the young lion down from the tree.

In China, many public schools finish classes a few hours before the end of parents’ workday. So parents can’t work full days or need others to help pick up (接) their children.
To help out working parents, the Ministry of Education(教育部) wants primary and middle schools to close late to make time for working parents. Before parents pick up their children, there should be after-school activities in schools. Teachers can help students with their homework. Students can enjoy their hobbies in groups too. But students can’t have lessons after school.
In Nanjing, there are free after-school activities in all primary schools from 2017. In 2021 the schools change the time from 5:30 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. so that parents can pick up their kids. About 230,000 children in primary schools do such activities. They are half of all primary school students in the city.
From this spring, Shanghai public schools also change their school hours from ending at 3 p.m.to 4:30 p.m. Teachers work for more hours to look after their students after school. “Teachers take turns to do the activities,” a 5th-grade teacher in Shanghai says, “and usually I look after the students every Wednesday and Friday afternoon.”

(2022·江苏盐城)Last Tuesday morning, it was very windy when I woke up. As soon as I set off for the airport, it began to rain hard. What a special way to start a holiday!
While I was driving to the airport, the storm got worse. Suddenly, a huge flash of lightning hit a tree. It came straight down just metres in front of my car. The fallen tree completely blocked(堵塞) the road, so I was stuck. I tried to call for help on my mobile, but the line was dead.
I was sure that I’d miss my plane, so I turned on the radio and tried to get used to the idea. Soon there was a loud knock at the window. To my surprise, it was a young man in leather clothes. “Need a ride, sir?” He asked. My plane was leaving in an hour so I didn’t think twice. I took my bags, climbed carefully onto the motorcycle and shouted. “To the airport please!”
It was my first time on a motorcycle so I was badly nervous. The young man drove so fast that I kept my eyes closed all the way. Suddenly, the motorcycle came to a stop. “Here we are, sir!” he said. I looked at my watch and there were only ten minutes left. I was just in time for my flight. The young man wished me a nice trip, then quickly drove away.

The following is a letter to a newspaper and the reply from Robert Hunt, a school counselor(辅导员).
    Dear Mr. Hunt,
My problem is that I can’t get on with my family. Relations(关系) between my parents have become difficult. They fight a lot, and I really don’t like it. It’s the only communication(交流) they have. I don’t know if I should say anything to them about this. When they argue(争吵), it’s like a big, black cloud over our home. Also, my elder brother is not very nice to me. He always refuses to let me watch my favorite TV show. Instead he watches what he wants until late at night. I don’t think this is fair. At home I always feel lonely and nervous. Is that normal(正常的) for a girl like me?
    What can I do?
    Sad and Thirteen
    ………………………………………………………………………………………………………
    Dear Sad and Thirteen,
It’s not easy being your age, and it’s normal to have these feelings. Why don’t you talk about these feelings with your family? If your parents are having problems, you should offer to help. Maybe you could do more jobs around the house so that they have more time for proper communication. Secondly, why don’t you sit down and communicate with your brother? You should explain that you don’t mind him watching TV all the time. However, he should let you watch your favorite show. I hope things will be better for you soon.
