The American travel website company Trip Advisor publishes a list of the world's best beaches every year.Today,we are going to explore some of this year's top 10 beaches in the world.
    1.Baia do Sancho,Brazil
It is named as this year's best beach in the world. Its water is calm and clear. Its sand is fine and soft. But getting to Baia do Sancho is not so easy.It is on Fernando de Noronha,a volcanic island more than 300 kilometres off Brazil's coast.Travelers must take a plane or boat from major cities in northern Brazil to get there. And no more than 420 visitors can be on the island at one time.
    2.Grace Bay,Turks and Caicos
While Baia do Sancho is difficult to get to,Trip Advisor's secondranked beach could not be much easier for tourists to reach. This beach has impossibly clean and clear waters and pure white sand. Its calm waters make it extremely safe for swimming, snorkeling(潜水),or simply floating.Once on land, many visitors enjoy walkingbarefoot for several kilometres on the soft, warm sand.
    3.Eagle Beach,Aruba
To get to the thirdbest beach,we head south to the Dutch Caribbean island of Aruba.Like Grace Bay,Eagle Reach has clear, calm waters and soft white sand.It offers visitors a chance to try different water sports, including tubing and jet skiing.Eagle Beach may be best known, however, for its dramatic sunsets. On clear nights, the sky turns red, orange, and purple.
    4.Playa Paraiso,Cuba
The fourthbest beach is Playa Paraiso,an island off of Cuba's southern coast. It has a fun, laidback restaurant for those who wish to eat and drink. There is little else on the beach. And that is exactly what visitors like about it.People come here for the sugarlike sand and calm waters filled with colorful wildlife.

After three quarters of an hour they reached the height where the hut(小屋)of the old man stood on a rock, exposed to every wind, but bathed in the full sunlight. From there you could see far down into the valley.
Overlooking the valley the old man had made himself a bench, by the side of the hut. Here he sat, with his pipe between his teeth and both his hands resting on his knees. He quietly watched the children climbing up with the goats and Aunt Deta behind them.Heidi reached the top first, and approaching the old man, she held out her hand to him and said, “Good evening, grandfather!”
“Well, well, what does that mean?”replied the old man in a rough voice.Giving her his hand for only a moment, he watched with a long and penetrating look from under his bushy brows.Heidi gazed back at him and examined him, for he was strange to look at.
Deta had arrived in the meantime with Peter, who was eager to see what was going to happen.
“Good day to you, uncle,”said Deta as she approached.“This is Tobias' and Adelheid's child. You won't be able to remember her, because last time you saw her, she was only one year old.”
“Why do you bring her here?” asked the uncle, and turning to Peter, he said: “Get away and bring my goats. How late you are already!”
Peter obeyed and disappeared; the old man had looked at him in such a manner that he was glad to go.
“Uncle, I've brought the little girl for you to keep,” said Deta.“I have done my share these four years and now it's your turn to provide for her.”

A nickname is a shortened form of a person's name.A nickname can also be a descriptive name for a person, place or thing. Many American cities have nicknames.
Los Angeles has several nicknames. One is simply the city's initials, LA.It is also called “The City of Angels” because Los Angeles means “the angels” in Spanish.
Los Angeles often has warm, sunny weather. So another nickname is “City of Flowers and Sunshine”.New York is called “The Big Apple”.So Los Angeles is sometimes called “The Big Orange” because of the fruit that grows in that city's warm climate.
The American motion picture and television industries are based in Los Angeles. So it is not surprising that it is called “The Entertainment Capital of the World”.Many films are made in the area of Los Angeles called Hollywood.Millions of people visit the area.No trip to Los Angeles is completely without seeing the word “Hollywood” spelled out in huge letters on a hillside.
Many movie stars live in Los Angeles. The city is sometimes called “Tinseltown”.This nickname comes from the shiny, bright and often unreal nature of Hollywood and the movie industry.
Another nickname for Los Angeles is “LaLa Land”, using the first letters of Los and Angeles. This means a place that is fun and not serious, and maybe even out of touch with reality.
The city of Los Angeles is part of Los Angeles County. There are many smaller cities in the county.Beverly Hills, with its rich people, is one of them.So is Pasadena, with its Rose Parade each New Year's Day.
A good place for watching unusuallooking people is Venice, an area on the west side of Los Angeles.A system of waterways designed after the Italian city of Venice has been built there.

Many people have long dreamed of being able to fly around as simply as riding a bicycle.Yet the safety and strength of a flying bike was always a big problem.Over the past 10 years, developments in technology have moved the dream of personal flying vehicles closer to reality. Now,two groups of inventors say such vehicles may be available soon.
The British company Malloy Aeronautics has developed a prototype (原型) of its flying bicycle.Grant Stapleton, marketing sales director of Malloy Aeronautics, says the Hoverbike is able to get in and out of small spaces very quickly.“It can be moved across continents very quickly because it can be folded and packed,”he adds.
Mr.Stapleton says safety was the company's main concern. He says the designers solved the safety issue by using overlapping rotors to power the vehicle.
The company is testing a fullsize prototype of the Hoverbike, which will most likely be used first by the police and emergency rescue teams.
In New Zealand,Martin Aircraft Company is also testing a fullsize prototype of its personal flying device, called the Jetpack. It can fly for more than 30 minutes,up to 1,000 metres high and reach a speed of 74 kilometres per hour.
Peter Coker is the CEO of Martin Aircraft Company. He said the Jetpack “is built around safety from the start”.In his words,“Reliability is the most important element of it.We have safety built into the actual structure itself, very similar to a Formula One racing car.”
The Jetpack uses a gasolinepowered engine that produces two powerful jet streams.Mr.Coker says it also has a parachute (降落伞) that would be used,if there should be an emergency.“It starts to work at very low altitude and actually saves both the aircraft and the pilot,”he adds.Mr.Coker says the Jetpack will be ready for sale soon.

B.the engine of the Jetpack is powerful
C.the actual structure of the Jetpack is unique

    A.the jet stream B.the engine

    Top Tips for Better Writing
There are many different types of writing, such as essays, letters and speeches.Whatever your reason is and whatever your style, there are some universal tips that will help you improve your writing:
    Be clear about your purpose
The most basic question to ask yourself before you start is why you are writing. In an essay or assignment, your purpose is to convey information and draw conclusions. But if you are writing a business report, you may want to make recommendations(建议). 16
    Start with a plan
17 The result is often disjointed writing with parts that don't connect.Whatever you are writing, creating a clear plan is the first step to getting your message across quickly and in the most effective way.
Guide readers through what you write
Your task is to help readers understand your message quickly and precisely. 18 Each sentence, each paragraph should be relevant to what comes before and what comes after. You should use words and phrases that connect to show these connections.
    19
Your aim in writing is to communicate ideas and information to other people, and you must keep that in mind with every word and sentence you write.Constantly ask yourself who you really write the information for.
Write for the ear, not for the eye
Once you've finished a draft of your speech, practice reading it out loud. 20 Revise so you are more comfortable giving your speech. You want to sound natural, no matter what the occasion is.
    A.Write for readers, not yourself
B.Write for the aim, not for the words
C.It sounds robotic, and employers hate it.
D.Far too often people write without a plan.
E.You'll hear anything that sounds awkward.
F.Whatever it is, keep your purpose in mind at all times to avoid going off the topic.
G.To do this, it is necessary to show them clearly how the different parts relate to each other.

17.D [由“The result is often disjointed writing with parts that don't connect.”可知,结果导致写作各部分不连贯。所以判断出本题说的是原因,才导致了写作各部分不连贯。故D选项“人们写东西往往不拟提纲”符合句意。故D选项切题。]
18.G [由“Each sentence, each paragraph should be relevant to what comes before and what comes after. You should use words and phrases that connect to show these connections.”
19.A [由“Your aim in writing is to communicate ideas and information to other people, and you must keep that in mind with every word and sentence you write.Constantly ask yourself who you really write the information for.”
20.E [由“Revise so you are more comfortable giving your speech.”

故填a。]

A wealthy man and his son liked to collect rare works of art. They had everything in their collection, from Picasso to Raphael. They would often sit together and admire these great works of art.
When the Vietnam conflict broke out,the son went to war.Unfortunately he died in battle while rescuing another soldier. The father was in deep sorrow for his only son.
About a month later, just before Christmas, there was a knock at the door.A young man stood at the door with a large package in his hands. He said,“Sir,you don't know me,I am the soldier for whom your son gave his life.”“He saved many lives that day,and he was carrying me to safety when a bullet struck him in the heart and killed him instantly.”“He often talked about you,and your love of art.”The young man held out this package.“I know this isn't much.”“I'm not a great artist, but I think your son would have wanted you to have this.”
The father opened the package. It was a picture of his son, painted by the young man.He stared in surprise at the way the soldier captured the personality of his son in the painting. The father was so drawn to the eyes that his own eyes welled with tears. He thanked the young man and offered to pay for the painting.“Oh,no sir,I could never repay what your son did for me.It's a gift.”
The father hung the picture on the hall.Every time visitors came to his home he took them to see the portrait of his son before he showed them any of the other great works he had collected.
The man died a few months later. There was to be a great auction(拍卖) of his art collection. Many influential people gathered, excited over seeing the great paintings and having the opportunity to purchase one for their collection.

On the platform sat the painting of the son.The auctioneer banged his hammer.“We will start the bidding with the picture of the son.Who will bid for this painting?”There was silence. Then a voice in the back of the room angrily shouted,“We didn't come to see this picture. We want to see his great works of art.”But the auctioneer continued.“Will somebody bid for this painting?Who will take the son?”
Finally a voice came from the back of the room.“I'll give $10.00 for the painting.”It was the gardener of the father and his son.Being a poor man it was all he could afford.“We have $10,who will bid $20?”No response.“Going once, twice,SOLD for $10!”“Now the auction is over!”The auctioneer laid down his hammer and explained,“When I was called to conduct this auction,I was told that only the painting of the son would be auctioned. And whoever purchased the picture of the son would receive all the father's possessions, including the paintings.”
