    My first trip t Greece tk place in the 1960s. There I accepted a challenge t hitchhike(搭便车)with a grup f English friends frm my university in Birmingham t Athens with little mney. Fr me, a 20-year-ld girl, I had nt dne anything like this befre. lt was s hard n the rad. We slept in the pen air, ate little mre than bread and cheese, and depended heavily n the help f strangers. But it helped me learn abut Eurpean sciety.
    One day, my Greek friend came t see me at the yuth hstel and asked me t step utside. He was angry with me. He reminded me f my scial backgrund and asked what my parents wuld say if they saw me living in these cnditins like these "dirty" English. After several weeks n the rad, we did lk tired; but his chice f the wrd "dirty" interested me. He was shwing a histric dislike f the English that sme Eurpeans had. In that part f Eurpe, bth the Turks and the Greeks, wh dislike each ther t this day, blamed(责怪) the English fr their natinal disasters. He ignred my explanatins f having accepted the challenge f hitchhiking. He tk me hme and his family, especially his mther and sisters, shwed me Greek hspitality(好客) at its best.
    My experience in Greece culd nt have differed mre frm the situatin facing Pakistanis—and thers seeking shelter —in Greece tday. On recent visits t Greece in cnnectin with my study n Islam in Eurpe, I saw the truble f the refugees(难民). Sme said that they had been physically beaten. Hwever, there are gd stries f rdinary Greeks giving shelter t sme hpeless refugees. The sense f Greek hspitality that I experienced as a student des exist.
