Living gratefully has a huge transfrming pwer, nt just when smething wnderful r special happens, but every day n matter what is happening.
I’ve recently been invlved with tw peple whse lives were challenged by bad luck. I have seen hw grateful living had the pwer t keep ne f them ging and hw it’s beginning t lift the ther. One was a friend and the ther is my sister.
My friend seemed t be in gd health when she received a deadly diagnsis(诊断): a disease with n effective treatment. She had all the emtins that a tragedy (悲剧) brings, but she als had a pwerful respnse t despair that gave her “the happiness that desn’t depend n what happens.” She wrte nline daily, hnestly sharing the details f her situatin.
She wrte that even thugh it was difficult t mve, this gave her mre time t ntice small things. She was grateful nt nly fr the lve and help f family and friends, but als fr time t see the sun rise and watch the birds in her yard. N pprtunity fr gratefulness was wasted.
She taught that gratefulness is nt a false cheerfulness. It’s taking every pprtunity t celebrate the blessings f small things. We can be grateful fr the challenges that help us develp cmpassin (同情) fr each ther. Life is a precius gift.
She repeatedly blgged (写博客) that she was happier than she had ever been.
When she wrte abut “the wrst day”, she ended with “life is still a lvely gift.” She died later that day.
Her message, hwever, changed my sister’s life. My sister’s health was getting wrse and wrse, thugh nthing life-threatening. She did have a very painful knee. Her life was in danger frm her defeated spirit. She was bedbund (卧床不起), getting weaker and weaker. Fearful, angry and depressed, she felt ut f ptins fr recvery.
I read my sister a few f my friend’s messages. I was careful nt t say, “Why can’t yu be mre like her?” Instead, I let the wrds d their wrk. I’m grateful t say that an attitude f gratitude began t replace her anger and fear. I believe this helped her t heal.
We can’t be grateful fr all that happens, but we can practice gratefulness fr all that happens, but we can practice gratefulness fr life itself, fr all we can learn t deal with, fr all the ways we can help each ther grw and heal.
    28. Hw did the authr’s sister feel when she was ill?

In the film The Matrix, Agent Smith, a super-cmputer in human shape, says, “Yu mve t an area, and yu multiply, and multiply, until every natural resurce is cnsumed. The nly way yu can survive is t spread t anther area. There is anther rganism (生物体) n this planet that fllws the same pattern: a virus. Human beings are a disease, a cancer f this planet.”
Yes, relatively speaking, we are just a large virus. While mst species live in balance with their ecsystems, we fail t d s. We are taking mre frm nature than it has t give. We wipe ut animals and plants as a virus might invade (侵袭) and kill a hst. We are destrying ur hst, the earth.
Our brain has been ur mst successful tl fr survival. The funny thing is that ur mind has develped t such a degree that we have thught up slutins t mre survival prblems. We are fr the first time in earth's histry changing nature t suit ur cmfrt and desires. Being a human, I d like the advancement f technlgy and medicine as we have the chance t survive lnger and smetimes feel less pain. After all, nature is cruel and we can sften its blw thrugh these inventins. Hwever, peple surviving genetic (基因的) faults r illness, culd they be actually making the gene pl mre “dirty” and culd even mre peple in the future suffer due t an increase in faulty DNA? It seems that even thugh we deal with a shrt-term prblem we culd be causing mre. Are we being kind t be cruel?
We are lucky enugh t wn a brain cmplex enugh t think and create. But we fail t realize the nly way t really survive is thrugh respect f ur hst, the earth, and wrking with it as the nly way a living thing can benefit is by benefiting its hst as it depends n it t survive.

Grwing up, my parents and lder brthers all smked. Being a child f the 80s, it was nrmal fr the adults t be smking inside and during trips in the car. There just wasn’t the same awareness f the dangers f secnd-hand smke expsure that there is tday.
I remember the day when I started smking. I was 11. I was trying t impress ne f the “bad bys” at schl. I stle tbacc frm my father and rather clumsily rlled a cigarette that I tk t schl with me. Smking gave me a sense f autnmy and chice ver my wn life, and at 11 it was the ultimate act f rebellin. Sn I gt addicted t it and was taking cigarettes frm dad’s packets n a regular basis. I knew he never started cunting them until he had less than half a pack left.
After a while I gt caught smking at schl. My parents struck a deal with me: if I stpped smking at schl, they wuld purchase mre tbaccs fr me t smke at hme. This was perhaps a misguided attempt t keep me ut f truble. I jumped at the idea, and simply gt smarter abut smking at schl.
I smked right thrugh my teens and early 20s, spending thusands f dllars n cigarettes, sacrificing fd and ther necessities t ensure I had cigarettes.
I tried many methds t quit, but each time I wuld g back t smking. I have always had a lve-hate relatinship with cigarettes. On the ne hand, they were a friend t me when I had n ther, ne cnstant in my life I culd rely n. On the ther hand, I despised (鄙视) being dependent n smething that was ging t kill me.

My daughter fights every day t breathe — and here I was intentinally causing damage t my lungs.
