(2023上·江苏盐城·高一统考期中)I cme frm a family f dg lvers—althugh my late mther never fed ur pet s table fds, s I suppse that she was as lukewarm abut them as I was. While I had the idea f getting a cat just after I mved t my first tiny studi apartment in New Yrk City, I quickly realized the litter bx(猫砂盆) wuld never be ut f my line f sight. S I headed t the lcal nursery t pick up sme indr plants fr a little cmpaninship(陪伴). Little did I knw that Phil and Charltte, the phildendrn and spider plant I bught that day mre than25 years ag, wuld still be my rmmates all these years later.
I have nthing against peple wh lve their dgs—if pet wnership makes them happy, I’m happy fr them. But as an extremely independent persn, I find dgs t needy. When s many peple kept puppies(小狗) during the lckdwn days f the early COVID-19 pandemic, I turned my apartment int a greenhuse. My hme became the quiet and peaceful place I needed at the time. And never nce did I need t duble-mask t take a dg n a walk in the cld rain!
But plants have persnality and need attentin t. They just dn’t shw it by crying r jumping n me. I’ve gt a peace lily, which I’ve named Herald, wh lwers his head dramatically(夸张做作地) when he needs a drink, giving me a message that the rest f the crwd are prbably thirsty t. He springs back up just as dramatically right after I water him, and he makes me feel s prud that I’m keeping living things alive. It’s a quieter frm f caregiving and cmpaninship than pets, but it brings me purpse and jy.
Phil and Charltte have cmpletely different persnalities than Herald. They knw and have kept all my adult-life secrets, and like any gd rmmates, they maintain a lw prfile(低姿态). Overwatering, underwatering, fertilizer(肥料) r n, a fancy new flwerpt(花盆)—they dn’t care abut any f it. They just grw. I may nt be able t take them t the dg park t cmmunicate with my neighbrs, but I have jined a cmmunity gardening grup where all the members happily talk abut their belved ptted friends t. S even if it seems unlikely, plants can widen yur scial circle just as much as a dg can.

(2023上·江苏淮安·高一统考期中)Melanie Guttmann, c-funder f LG, a German climate(气候) grup, nce spent six days in prisn after being arrested during a public gathering against “new nrmal”. She tells me that she just wanted t have a peaceful life, spend sme time with the peple she lved and start a family. But finally, she says, she’d be willing t be in prisn even lnger if it might make a difference. “I started t realize that n matter whether I’m in prisn r nt, I will never have thse things.”
I have been turning ver her wrds fr what happened later. Vermnt experienced strms last week, causing flds and resulting in deaths. An extreme heat brught the number f peple in ne Phenix emergency rm t levels never seen since the COVID-19 pandemic. The cean water arund the Flrida Keys reached a temperature f ver 90°F, seriusly endangering cral reefs.
Many well-meant statesmen mentin what’s happening as “new nrmal”. It’s meant, f curse, t pint ut the lng-term effects f putting large amunts f greenhuse gases int air. But the phrase f “new nrmal”, t me, als has the suggestin that nw, at least, is “nrmal,” as if we’ve been riding a lift f glbal (全球的) temperature rise, and just arrived at the tp flr. “It surely is ht up here at the new nrmal, but gd thing is that it wn’t get any wrse.”
Unfrtunately, thugh, it will. The changes we are experiencing are nly quickening. Each new seasn is a baseline frm which things will get stranger still. There’ll be yet mre heat dmes, strms, and flding, cming at a faster and faster speed. By 2050, the wrld culd be dealing with 1.2 billin climate refugees (难民) escaping fr their lives.
One thing frm Guttmann’s wrds is clear: Hwever bad things are nw, they’re set t get a whle lt wrse. We need t have the awareness that there is n “new nrmal” where we can stp t catch ur breath. And, if we dn’t d smething, things will get wrse.
    29. Why is Guttmann’s stry mentined?

    D. What Guttmann wants will prbably cme t nthing at such a “new nrmal”.

    A. Unclear.B. Supprtive.C. Dubtful.D. Negative.

Scilgist and prfessr f fd studies, Krishnendu Ray, explains that hme cking is ften the last way that cmmunities can shw their identity. Hwever, fd cnsultant Sara Kay asks whether there are prblems with the idea f authenticity. She stresses that these ideas ften cme frm the expectatins that majrity cultures have abut minrity cultures and their fd. These can be restricting(限制的)--restauranteurs have cmplained that peple expect Asian fd t be cheaper than that frm Eurpean cultures. Expectatins can als give peple a false idea f what is authentic. While large cities are full f eateries representing different cuntries — China, India, Italy, Mexic and mre--these labels can versimplify the reality f fd frm these cuntries. Stephanie Eliznd Greist is surprised by the recgnitin(认识) that fds in Mexic are mre authentic than what she ate grwing up as a Mexican-American in Texas, because she feels that bth are authentic examples f Mexican fd.
A mre cntrversial(有争议的) view f authenticity was stated by American Chef Andrew Zimmern, wh claimed that he culd bring in Chinese dishes in a mre authentic way than existing restaurants — many f which are wned by Chinese-Americans. Writer and fd pdcaster Ruth Tam pints ut that while these restaurants altered their menus t suit lcal tastes, s des Zimmern. 36. The underlined wrd “altered” has the similar meaning with ________.
    A. changedB. keptC. trickedD. pressed

T create the experimental bike path, the SlaRad team laid dwn cncrete slabs (混凝土板) with rws f slar cells abve. A layer f strng glass cvers and prtects the cells. Sunlight passes thrugh the glass and int the cells, which turn the sunlight int electrical energy.
Althugh the bike path was expensive t build, with the energy it prduces, it culd pay fr itself within 15 years. By building slar-pwered bike paths and rads, cities culd prduce enugh energy t pwer streetlamps, traffic lights, and even electric cars. Mst peple dn’t ntice that the bike path is different frm a traditinal street. Sten de Wit says, “That is exactly what we want: it des whatever it has t d t be a prper rad while harvesting slar energy at the same time.”
