Dris knew it had wanted sme cmpany and that it had lain against the dr, listening t the talk in the kitchen, smelling the fd, being a part f things. It always wagged its tail, eyes all sleepy, when she fund it there.

She knew her parents wuldn’t let her keep it, that her father made s little mney and any pets were ut f the questin, and that the dg wuld definitely g t the shelter when the weather cleared. Still, she tried talking t them abut the dg at dinner ne night. “She’s a gd dg and nt much truble, right?” Dris said, hping ne f them wuld agree with her. But Mr. Lacey shk his head, “Yu knw we can’t affrd a dg, Dris. Yu try t act mre grwn-up abut this.” Dris fell silent, praying the weather wuld never clear.
