    A

After Mom died, I began visiting Dad every morning before I went to work. He was weak and moved slowly, but he always had a glass of freshly squeezed(压榨) orange juice on the kitchen table for me, along with an unsigned note reading, Drink your juice. Such a gesture, I knew, was as far as Dad had ever been able to go in expressing his love. In fact, I remember, as a kid I had questioned Mom, Why doesn't Dad love me? Mom frowned, Who said he doesn't love you? Well, he never tells me, I complained. He never tells me either, she said, smiling. But look how hard he works to take care of us, to buy us food and clothes, and to pay for this house. That's how your father tells us he loves us.

I nodded slowly. I understood in my head, but not in my heart. I still wanted my father to put his arms around me and tell me he loved me. Dad owned and operated a small scrap metal(废金属) business, and after school I often hung around while he worked. He risked serious injury when he handed scrap steel into a machine that cut it into pieces. Why don't you hire someone to do that for you? Mom asked Dad one night as she bent over him and rubbed his aching shoulders with a strong smelling liniment(药膏). Why don't you hire a cook? Dad asked, giving her one of his rare smiles.

Many years later, during my first daily visit, after drinking the juice my father had squeezed for me, I walked over,  hugged him and said, I love you, Dad. From then on I did this every morning. My father never told me how he felt about my hugs, and there was never any expression on his face when I gave them.

    A. He told her face to face. B. He made a gesture.

    C. He eyed the juice carefully. D. He left a note.

    A. He was extremely tired every day. B. He was too busy to stay with families.

    C. He had his own way of loving families. D. He was not good at communicating.

    3. What can we infer from the text?

    A. The father lacked a sense of humor.

    B. The author understood his father as time went on.

    C. The author didn't like orange juice actually.

    D. The father was too strict with the author.

    4. What is the best title for the text?

    A. A Glass of Orange Juice B. A Speechless Father

    C. Love Itself Speaks D. Father Means Responsibility

Theodor Seuss Geisel was born in Springfield, Massachusetts in 1904. He was famous because of the books he wrote for children. They combine(兼有) funny words, pictures, and social opinion.

Dr Seuss wrote his first book for children in 1937. It is called And to Think That I Saw It on Mulberry Street. A number of publishers refused to publish it. They said it was too different, and it's not worth publishing. A friend finally published it. Soon other successful books followed. Over the years, he wrote more than forty children's books. They were fun to read. Yet his books sometimes dealt with serious subjects.

By the middle 1940s, Dr Seuss had become one of the best-loved and most successful writers of children's books. He had a strong desire to help children. In 1954, Life magazine published a report about school children who could not read. The report said many children's books weren't interesting. Dr Seuss decided to write books that were interesting and easy to read.

In 1957, Dr Seuss wrote The Cat in the Hat. He used less than 225 words to write the book. This was about the number of words a six-year-old should be able to read.

The story is about a cat who tries to please two girls on a rainy day while their mother is away from home. The cat is not like normal cats. It talks. The book was an immediate success. It was an interesting story and was easy to read. Children loved it. Their parents loved it, too. Today many adults say it is still one of the stories they like best.

    5. What do we know about Dr Seuss' first book for children?

    A. Few children had interest in the topic.

    B. Most publishers thought it was nothing fresh.

    C. Neither children nor adults liked it.

    D. Many publishers didn't take it seriously at first.

    6. How did Dr Seuss react to the report from Life magazine?

    A. He wrote a dictionary book for children.

    B. He tried to write stories interesting and easily-understood.

    C. He asked his two daughters to keep a cat.

    D. He spent lots of time with many six-year-olds.

    7. What can we learn about The Cat in the Hat?

    A. It is popular among both children and adults.

    B. It was published by Life magazine at first.

    C. It was written in the middle 1940s.

    D. It is a book with only pictures.

    8. What is the best title for this text?

    A. Success Comes after Failure

    B. Good Childhood Lies in Good Books

    C. Dr Seuss, a Famous Writer of Children's Books

    D. Dr Seuss, a Best-Ever Character of Children's Books

    参考范文

    Dear Tom,

I'm glad to hear that you're going to visit Hubei this winter holiday. I'll give you some advice and hope you have a good time travelling.

Firstly, you'd better surf the Internet to get some relevant information about the tourist attractions of Hubei, which can help you decide where to go and how to go. In addition, it's wise to book your hotel room in advance so that you can have a place to rest when you reach your destination. Last but not least, as soon as you get to the destination, you'd better contact a local guide in order to have a better understanding of the culture or the relics of the place you will visit.

I hope you will have a comfortable and unforgettable experience in Hubei.

    Yours,

    Li Hua
