新风向 中国文化Red Packets in Chinese Culture
Giving hongbao (red packets) is a tradition in China. Traditional red packets are often decorated with gold Chinese characters(汉字), such as 11 and wealth.
    How red packets are used
During Chinese New Year, money is put inside red packets which are then 12 to younger generations by their parents, grandparents, relatives, and even close neighbours and friends.
    The 13
Red represents luck and good fortune in Chinese culture. That is 14 red packets are used during Chinese New Year and other celebrations.
How to give and receive red packets
Giving and receiving red packets is a(n) 15 act. Therefore, red packets are always given and received 16 both hands.
Someone who receives a red packet at Chinese New Year or on his or her birthday should not 17 it in front of the giver. 18 , things are different at a Chinese wedding, where the guests usually give the red packets to the attendants and sign 19 names on a large scroll (a long piece of paper). The attendants will open the packets at once, 20 the money inside, and record it on a register(登记簿) next to the guests' names.
    The amount(数量)
The amount of money is relative to your relationship with the person who receives it — the 21 your relationship is, the more money is expected. Anyway, it is not the amount of the money that matters, but the care and love you hold for others.
    What not to gift
Certain amounts of money are to be 22 . Anything with a four is not good because four sounds similar to 23 in Chinese. Even numbers(偶数), except four, are better than odd numbers — as good things are believed to come in 24 . For example, gifting ¥20 is better than ¥21.
The money inside a red packet should 25 be new. Folding the money or giving dirty or wrinkled bills is in bad taste.
Hongbao is a symbol of love from others, as well as a sign of good luck.

    A(2023·山西中考模拟百校联考一改编)
Table manners are how to behave when you eat a meal, for example, how to handle cutlery(餐具)and how to eat in a polite manner. Following them will help you avoid mistakes at table.
    Japan
It is "perfectly" okay to make a noise when you eat noodles. But in China, avoiding the noise is necessary. Chopsticks touching the rice bowl is not only impolite, but also means having no food. It's important to say thanks before and after a meal.
    Russia
Your wrists should be placed on the edge (边缘) of the table while eating, fork in the left hand and knife in the right hand. Keep your hands in sight. It is not good manners to rest them on your legs. Keep your elbows off the table. Leave some food on your plate to show that the host has given you enough to eat, or the host will ask if you'd like to have a second helping.
    France
In France, a meal is like a ceremony. People enjoy it and make it a special event. Unlike Russia, it's regarded as good manners to finish everything on your plate. People often cut bread directly on a table cloth rather than on a plate. Tear your bread into small pieces before eating.Taking a bite from the whole piece is very impolite.

    B(2023·福建龙岩期末)
Meeting someone for the first time can be embarrassing(令人尴尬的) if you get it wrong. Suppose you are going to meet a person from the UK. Do you know what you should say and do?
A handshake is the most common way to greet someone, especially if you are in a formal situation. However, the type of handshake is important. Your handshake should be confident, but that doesn't mean you need to crush(挤压) anybody's fingers. On the other hand, don't be too weak. It's always a good idea to smile and make eye contact with the person you are shaking hands with. Lastly take hold of the hand and shake it up and down twice. Don't hold on for too long.
Hugging and kissing are more informal greetings in the UK. They are usually for friends, family and small children. When meeting someone for the first time, you may not want to use these types of greetings.
In the past, Britons would usually greet strangers with a "How do you do?" Today, this phrase is seen as out-of-date. It's rarely used. Phrases such as "How are you doing?" and "How are you?" have become more popular. However, when a Briton says "How are you?" to you, he or she probably doesn't expect you to really answer the question. You may just respond with a "How are you?" to him or her.
Greeting phrases may differ from one place to another. You might hear a "Now then?" or "Ey up?" when you meet someone from the north of the UK. How should you respond then? Just smile and say "Hi!"or "How are you?"

Tea and coffee are two of the most popular drinks in the world. However, people usually like one more than the other. These drinks also have very different uses.
Tea drinking started in China over 4,000 years ago. Tea is made from leaves. These days, some people drink tea for health, using it to help with stress or losing weight. However, most people in tea-drinking countries think of tea as more than just a healthy drink. In fact, tea drinking in some countries is a part of the culture. In Türkiye(土耳其), tea is always there when people meet. Whether in someone's home or a company, tea is always offered as a way of welcome. In the UK, homes and offices usually have teatime. Tea and other dishes are served at teatime in the afternoon. It is a way of relaxing with friends or co-workers(同事).
Coffee came much later than tea. Coffee is made from beans. Something in the coffee beans makes a person feel active. Most people do not drink coffee to relax. Instead, they drink coffee to get going. Many people drink coffee in the morning to help them wake up. Others will also drink coffee during short breaks in the afternoon to keep going through the working day. Some people may visit coffee shops just to meet and talk with friends. However, many people in coffee shops drink coffee while working on their computers.

In Spain, it's a good idea to have a light meal in the afternoon if someone invites you for dinner. Spanish people have dinner very late, and restaurants do not generally open until after 9 p.m.
In Arab countries, men kiss one another on the cheek(脸颊). Your host may welcome you with a kiss on both cheeks. It is polite for you to do the same.
In Japan, people usually give personal or business cards to each other when they meet for the first time. When a person gives you a card, don't put it into your pocket right away. He or she expects you to read it.
