English is very important to us in the modern world. Many people want to learn it well. Here are some things that I want to say about learning English.
You need two things to learn English well—passion and good learning methods(方法), and passion is the more important one. Why? Because passion makes you want to learn English, the learning methods only tell you how to do it better and faster.
If you love learning English, you’ll do it regularly and spend more time on it. Learning English will be easier for you. It’ll be easy for you to remember new words and grammars. ______. For example, some people like history and know everything about World War II. If you told a “normal person” to memorize(记忆)all these facts, they would never do it. We know you may not love learning English. And even if you love it, you won’t do it sometimes. This is how human psychology(心理)works—sometimes we’re very lazy and tired, so we don’t want to do anything though we like it very much.
When you don’t feel like learning English, you can do the following things:
First, imagine that you can talk to native speakers just like you talk in your native language. Imagine other people speak English as well as you do. Imagine the possibility of writing e-mail to people from all over the world.
Second, remember there’s a lot that you don’t know. You’re good, but your English probably isn’t good enough. Maybe you can’t understand English-language TV programs, read books in English, talk to English native speakers easily, or write letters without mistakes, etc.
Lastly, use English whenever you can. This is very, very important. The more you use English, the more you’ll want to learn it. Because English is so popular, you can use it everywhere. You can watch American cartoons, you can sing English songs, and you can read interesting books written in English.
    根据材料内容选择最佳答案。
1.The underlined word “passion” means “________” in Chinese.
    A.态度 B.热情 C.步骤 D.情感
2.The missing part in the third paragraph can be “________”.
    A.The brain can’t memorize everything
B.You’ll find it hard to learn English
C.That’s because the brain can easily remember information on a subject that you like
D.Everyone likes to learn what they like most
3.What can you do if you don’t want to learn English according to the passage?
    A.Go to English-speaking countries. B.Read interesting books.

C.How to write e-mails to other people.
D.Some advice on how to learn English.
If we want to learn English well, we must improve our English listening, speaking, reading and writing skills. I don’t think improving our reading skills is very difficult. If you want to get the most from the study of a language, you must read for pleasure: novels, plays, travel books, etc. And when you read these kinds of books, the most important is to read the book as a whole. It is not possible for you to stop to think about every word that you don’t know. You can’t enjoy a story if you stop many times on every page in order to look up words in the dictionary. That may even affect your understanding of the story.
When you read this kind of books, you’ll usually have to rely mainly on the context (上下文) to help you. If you meet a word that you don’t know, don’t take too much attention to look it up. You will probably meet it once more a few pages later in a different context, and then you can guess its meaning exactly.
The methods above  may help you to improve your reading skills. Have a try!

D.getting on with the book as a whole
9.When you read novels for pleasure, _________ is the main purpose.
A.to look up new words in the dictionary
B.to grasp the meaning of the whole story
C.to pay more attention to new words

10.Which of the following is TRUE?

C.When reading novels, plays, travel books and so on, it’s important to read the book as a whole.

In order to know a foreign language thoroughly(彻底地), four things are necessary. Firstly, we must be able to understand the language when we hear it. To us, it seems so natural to put up an umbrella to keep the water off when it rains. But in fact the umbrella was not invented as protection against the rain. Its first use was as a sunshade(遮阳伞).
Nobody knows who first invented it, but the umbrella was used in very ancient times. Probably the Chinese were the first to use it, back in the 11th century BC.
We know that the umbrella was used in ancient Egypt and Babylon as a sunshade. And there was a strange thing that connected with its use: it was a symbol of honor and power. In the Far East in ancient times, the umbrella was allowed to be used only by those in the upper class or by royal people such as kings or queens.
In Europe, the Greeks were the first to use the umbrella as a sunshade. The umbrella was in common use in ancient Greece, but it is believed that the first people in Europe to use the umbrella as protection against the rain were the ancient Romans. During the Middle Ages in Europe, the use of the umbrella almost disappeared. Then it appeared again in Italy in the late 16th century. And again it became a symbol of power.

David: Well, I don’t know how you all feel, but I find English really difficult. There are just so many words to remember, and the language structures are so difficult to understand. My problem is that I can’t remember all the new words and I find long passages difficult to understand. I’m so worried. How can I improve my English?
Tina: Don’t worry, David. I often use chants, songs and pictures to help me remember new words, and they’re quite useful. I also check the number of words I can remember each day. Then I’ll test myself again after one or two days. For very difficult words, I’ll review them again one or two weeks later. The important thing is to review the new words often.
Brian: For long passages, you should try to understand the general meaning and key points first. And for the language structures, the best way to remember them is to use them. Try to do more reading, listening, speaking and writing in English. The more you use them, the easier learning English will be.
Anne: As for me, I like to check my learning progress once a week. I usually make a list of things I do well and those I don’t. Then I’ll set my goals and work out a learning plan to achieve them. I find it very useful, and my English has improved a lot. By the way, I always reward myself when I achieve my goals.
Mrs. Smith: Never give up, David. Learning English is hard, but your English is already very good. I’m sure you’ll find a learning method that suits you. Remember, we’re all good at different things and we can all make a difference!

    二、阅读判断
    根据短文内容,判断正(T)误(F)。
When you are learning English, you find it not clever to put an English sentence word for word into your own language. Take the sentence “How do you do?” for example. If you look up each word in the dictionary, one at a time, what will be your translation? It must be a wrong sentence in your own language.
Languages don’t just have difference in sounds, they are different in many ways. It’s also important to master the rules for word order in the study of English. If the speakers put words in a wrong order, the listener will not understand the speaker’s sentence easily. Sometimes when the order of words in an English sentence is changed, the meaning of the sentence changes. However, sometimes the order is changed, the meaning of the sentence doesn’t change. Let’s see the difference between the two pairs of sentences. “She only likes apples.” “Only she likes apples!” “I have seen the film already.” “I have already seen the film.”
When you are learning English, you must do your best to get the spirit of the language and use it as the English speaker does.
44.We should put every word into our own language when we are learning English.
45.The writer thinks it is important to master the rules for word order in learning English.
46.Sometimes different order of words has a different meaning.
47.“She only likes apples.” is different from “Only she likes apples.”
48.How to Learn English is the best title for this passage.
Are you learning a foreign language? Do you know what a successful language learner should do?
First of all, successful language learners are independent learners. They do not depend on books or teachers. They discover their own ways to learn the language. They also look for clues (线索) and get their own ideas by guessing. When they guess wrong, they try again. They try to learn from their mistakes.
Successful language learning is active learning, so successful learners do not wait for a chance to use the language. They look for chances. They find native speakers and ask them for help when they make mistakes. They will try their best to communicate with others. They are not afraid to repeat what they heard or to say strange things.
Finally, successful language learners are learners with a purpose (目的). They want to learn the language in order to communicate with foreigners and learn about their lives, their culture and so on.
    阅读下面一篇短文,判断文后各小题的正(A)误(B)。
49.Successful language learners depend on books and teachers.
50.According to the author, it is worth guessing even if it is wrong.

No matter how carefully we check a composition (作文), it seems there’s always one more little mistake waiting to be discovered. The following tips may help you find your mistakes before anybody else does.
First of all, give it a rest. If time permits (允许), set your composition aside for a few hours after you’ve finished it, and then read it carefully to correct mistakes with fresh eyes.
Secondly, look for one type of problem at a time. Read through your composition several times, concentrating first on sentence structures, then word choice, then spelling, and finally punctuation (标点). As the saying goes, if you look for trouble, you’re likely to find it.
If you don’t believe in yourself, you can ask a friend for help. Read your composition to him aloud. You can also ask him to read it aloud. You may hear a problem that you haven’t been able to see. Your friend can also help you find some mistakes.
Then, try to read your composition backward (倒着). Another way to catch spelling mistakes is to read backward, from right to left, starting with the last word in your composition.
Another method some writers usually use is to keep a list of the types of mistakes they commonly make, and then use the list each time they correct their works.

    Future and Today
It is well known that everyone has his own dream as well as his own future. But do you know what future really is? I have to say that future is now. That is to say we must treasure every minute now. If we want to have a bright future, we should know how important time is and use it well.
There is an old English saying, “Gain time, gain life.” Then what’s time? Time is something that we can’t see or touch, but we can feel it passing by. Time is always with us. When we are at table, time passes; when we play, time goes by unnoticeable. We always say “Time is money”, but time is even more precious(珍贵的) than money, because when money is spent, we can earn it back. But if time is gone away, it will never return. So, some of us even say time is priceless(无价的).
We should always remember: future is now. For us students, we should try our best to work hard in order to create a great future of our own. We should make the best use of every hour and be the master of today. We should do everything before us as well as possible. And never put off what can be done today till tomorrow.
As we all know, “Time and tide wait for no man.” If you waste today, you will regret tomorrow. So from now on, work hard. Tomorrow will be better, and your future will be brighter. Remember: “No pains, no gains.” Today’s hard work is the cause of tomorrow’s harvest.

Lenin and his wife Krupskaya translated(翻译)a long English book(A)_______ Russian. But when they went to England in 1902,(B)English people couldn’t understand a word they said and they couldn’t understand what was said to them. Nowadays more and more foreigners are coming to China and more Chinese are going out to foreign countries to work or study. So the spoken language is becoming more and more important.
① Speaking, of course, can’t go without listening. If you want to pronounce a word correctly, first you must hear it correctly. The sounds of the Chinese and English languages are not exactly the same.(C)如果你不认真听, you’ll find it difficult or even impossible to understand the native speakers.
② Like speaking, it’s to exchange ideas. People usually use shorter words and shorter sentences in their writing. The important thing is to make your idea clear in your head and then to write it in lively language.
The students of learning a foreign language need special knowledge, the knowledge of the life, history and geography of the people whose language they are studying. ③ They should study these subjects in the foreign language, not only in translation. In this way, one can kill(D)_______ birds with one stone: learn a foreign language and get some knowledge of the foreign country at the same time.

    五、阅读回答问题
Usually, when we talk about reading, we think of using our eyes to see letters written in ink on paper. However, this is not always true. For example, blind people cannot see, but they can still read books.
The man who introduced blind people to reading was Louis Braille. Braille lost his eyesight at the age of three. When he was ten, he went to a school for the blind in Paris. In those days, books for blind people used paper pressed against metal wire to form letters. Since the metal wire was heavy, each book weighed as much as 100 pounds. Indeed, the school library only had fourteen such books in it.
In 1821, a soldier(士兵)visited the school and showed the students a system (系统)for passing messages at night. His system used paper with small, raised dots that could be felt with the fingers. Each letter of the alphabet was symbolized by a different pattern which consisted of twelve dots. The soldiers would pull their fingers over the raised dots to read the message.
While the students found the soldier’s idea interesting, the system was too difficult to be of practical use. However, young Louis Braille took the idea and worked on it. At the age of fifteen, he created a system with patterns of six raised dots symbolizing each letter. “Braille”, the system for reading used today by blind people around the world, was thus born.
The blind can easily recognize(辨别)Braille with their fingers. They can also easily write in Braille with a special typewriter. Today, it is the most common system used by blind people for reading and writing, and nearly every language, including Chinese, has its own version(版本)of Braille for its people to use.

I’m Mike Trent, a businessman from the United States. I have lived in China for more than seven years. Like many foreigners, I only knew two words of Chinese (“hello” and “thank you”) when I came to China in 2009. As you can probably guess, my life was difficult for a while after I arrived. Simple tasks like ordering food or taking a taxi were quite difficult for me.
I knew I had to learn more Chinese, so I signed up for a class. My teacher was very helpful, although I didn’t learn enough to have a real conversation. Later I studied on my own as well, but my progress was still slow. I became very frustrated (沮丧的).
Finally, I found that the best way to learn Chinese is to make friends with native (本土的) speakers and spend time with them. Around this time, I started playing in a band with a Chinese woman who became one of my best friends in Beijing. I learned a lot of Chinese by hanging out with her.
For example, she taught me a lot of words about music, such as “melody (旋律)”. She learned a lot of English from me in return, so it was a good way to exchange language and culture. She is still one of my best friends and we talk to each other nearly every day.
Now I’ve learned enough Chinese to take care of complex (复杂的) tasks, such as booking train tickets and negotiating (谈判) with my business partners.

Once there were five beggars(乞丐). One was English, one Turkish, one Greek, one was an Arab and one was Persian. One day they met and decided to stay together, sharing what they had and helping each other in trouble times.
Soon a man passed them in the street and gave them a coin. They talked about what to do with it. At last they decided to buy something to eat.
“Let’s buy some grapes!” said the Englishman. But the Turkish wanted “uzum”, the Arab “aneb”, the Greek “stafelea”, and the Persian insisted on “angur”. They did not understand each other’s language very well. Soon they were quarrelling and even fighting.
While they were fighting about how to spend the money, a stranger came along. He knew all the five languages. He asked them why they were fighting. After they told him, he said, “Give me your coin. I will buy what you want.”
He was soon back with a bunch of grapes. Each beggar was happy, as each had what he had wanted. They all asked for the same thing, but the word for “grapes” is different in different languages. If people could understand each other, there would be no need to fight.

I quite agree with him. I think we can also study English on the Internet.
