    B
On New Year’s Day 2023, I had a panic attack at work. Unfortunately for me, that meant in front of millions of people, as I was delivering the news, live, on ABC’s Good Morning America. In the wake of my nationally televised panic, I learned that I had undiagnosed depression. For months, I’d been having trouble getting out of bed in the morning and felt as if I had an everlasting low-grade fever.
Two things changed my mind. The first was the science. In recent years, there has been an explosion of research into meditation (冥想), which has been shown to reduce blood pressure, improve recovery after your body releases the stress hormone cortisol (荷尔蒙皮质醇), strengthen the immune system, and relieve the symptoms of depression and anxiety. Studies also show meditation can reduce violence in prisons, increase productivity in the workplace, and improve both the behavior and the grades of schoolchildren.
The second thing that changed my mind about meditation is that it does not necessarily take a lot of the magic stuff I feared it might. Contrary to popular belief, meditation does not have to involve folding yourself into a roll, joining a group, or wearing special dress. The word meditation is a little bit like the world sports; there are hundreds of varieties. The type of meditation discussed here is called mindfulness meditation, which is acquired from Buddhism but does not require adopting a belief system ór declaring oneself to be a Buddhist.
I began my practice slowly, with just five to ten minutes a day, which is what I recommend everyone aim for at the start. I have learned that the less delighted you are by the voice in your head, the more you can make room for entirely new thoughts and feelings to appear. In sum, meditation enables you to tap into what lies beneath or beyond the ego (自我). Call it creativity. Call it your original wisdom. Some people call it your heart.
24.What can the author’s profession possibly be?
    A.Reporter.
    B.Editor.
    C.TV broadcaster.
    D.Radio host.
25.What changed the author’s mind about meditation?
    A.It can lower blood pressure.
B.It can reduce depression and anxiety.
C.It can improve students’ behavior and performance.
D.It is scientific and without much fantastic frightening things.
26.What’s the difference between popular belief and mediation?
A.Mediation is free from various chains and forms.
B.Meditation doesn’t need to fold someone into a roll.
C.Meditation is more like the world sports than popular belief.
D.Meditation requires someone to join a group or wear special dress.
27.How do you make yourself more creative according to the last paragraph?
    A.Keep your mind clean.
    B.Keep a quiet environment.
    C.Practice mediation slowly.
D.Tap something beneath or beyond the ego.

    C
In the world of online shopping, many online purchases are based on careful consideration of star ratings and product reviews left by complete strangers. But should you trust customer reviews when deciding what to purchase? And do these mysterious reviewers have your best interests in mind? Here’s what you need to know.
Consumers today are skeptical, says Zach Pardes at review platform Trustpilot. “We live in a time when trust is completely under attack,” Pardes says. “So people are reading reviews and consuming them more than ever before, but I think there is a healthy skepticism at times of what they’re reading. Fake(假的) reviews do exist. Fake reviews include, but aren’t limited to, robot-generated reviews and reviews that are influenced by the seller.”
Of course, not all user reviews you read online are fake. High-quality reviews are a valuable tool when making a variety of purchases. Pardes says Trustpilot features a team in place to detect and remove fake reviews. Perhaps one of the best-known review websites is Yelp. Yelp takes measures to ensure “high-quality content,” says Kathleen Liu, a company spokesperson. That includes allowing Yelp’s community of business owners and users to flag content that may go against the site’s terms of service.
Since user reviews do provide helpful information, review as a whole shouldn’t be repudiated. But how can you tell the difference between what’s real and what’s not? It’s close to impossible for the everyday consumer. But if you conduct your investigation carefully, you can make an informed purchase.
Check more than one review source. Pardes advises consumers to read reviews on multiple platforms. “If you’re about to book a $10,000 vacation, you’d never rely only on the photos and the reviews posted by that hotel’s marketing team,” he says. “You are going to want to use a third-party independent resource.” Read more than a handful of reviews. Pardes says there is “safety in numbers.” Question perfection. Pardes says consumers shouldn’t trust reviews that show only five stars. “Nobody’s perfect so you can’t possibly have a perfect five-star review in every single category of your business.” he says.
28.What does Pardes imply about consumers in Paragraph2?
A.They are often influenced by sellers.
B.They must have long lost trust in sellers.
C.They often fail to recognize fake reviews.
D.They should be cautious of product reviews now.
29.What do Yelp and Trustpilot have in common?
A.Both aim to offer real user reviews.
    B.Both produce robot-generated reviews.
C.Both hire professionals to rate companies.
D.Both serve mainly like-minded business owners.
30.What does the underlined word “repudiated” in Paragraph 4 mean?
    A.Overestimated. B.Dismissed. C.Hidden. D.Blamed.
31.What is the last paragraph mainly about?
A.How to get the most out of online reviews. B.The significance of informed purchases.
C.Where to look for reliable reviews. D.The truth behind five-star ratings.

    D
Sunflowers are huge plants with bright yellow flowers. They have a long history in North America. There is evidence that they were used for food and for medicine by Native Americans beginning around 1000 B.C. The seeds from sunflowers were likely brought to Europe by Spanish explorers around the late 16th century. Over time, they found their way to Eastern Europe. Today, Ukraine is the world’s leading producer of the plants. Sunflowers are grown for their seeds and to make oil.
If you start growing sunflowers from seeds, put them in room-temperature water for 2-8 hours before planting to start the growing process. Plant each seed into dirt 2.5 centimetres deep and 15 to 30 centimetres apart. Plant them after the danger of frost has passed or start indoors three weeks before your last frost date. Keep the soil wet, but not too wet, until the seeds begin to grow.
Sunflower plants can be moved outdoors when the danger of frost has passed in your area. Choose a place outside that will provide the plants with at least 6- 8 hours of direct sunlight each day.
As the plants grow, they will develop long roots that work their way deep into the ground. So, before planting, it is important to loosen the soil. Dig at least one third of a metre down and remove any rocks.
Mixa large amount of compost (堆肥) into the soil where the plant will grow. Compost provides important, lasting nutrients that will help the plants all season long. The sunflowers may not need additional nutrients if they are planted with compost. If compost is not added during the planting process, provide nutrients through a slow release, all-purpose fertilizer (肥料) one or two times during the growing season.
32.What can be known about the sunflower in Paragraph 1?
A.It originated in South America. B.It was initially used to make oil.
C.It has a history of 3,000 years or so. D.It was taken to Europe by British explorers.
33.What are sunflower growers advised to do?
A.Keep the seeds in water for 10 hours.
    B.Plant seeds 2.5 centimetres apart.
C.Never put new plants in direct sunlight each day.
D.Plant seeds indoors 21 days before your last frost date.
34.Why is it important to loosen the soil before planting?
A.It is friendly to roots’ growth. B.It helps to hold water in the soil.
C.It guarantees adequate supplies of air. D.It is more efficient in keeping temperature.
35.What are Paragraphs 2-5 mainly about?
A.How to select sunflowers. B.How to grow sunflowers.
C.When to fertilize sunflowers. D.When to move sunflowers.

    第二节 读后续写 (满分25分)
    阅读下面短文,根据所给情节进行续写,使之构成一个完整的故事。
After filling out fifty applications, going through four interviews, and winning one offer, I took what I could get — a teaching job at what I considered a distant wild area: western New Jersey. My characteristic optimism was alive only when I reminded myself that I would be doing what I had wanted to do since I was fourteen — teaching English.
School started. I was teaching English. I worked hard, taking time off only to eat and sleep. And then there was my sixth-grade class who were only six years younger than me. I was struggling in my work as a young idealistic teacher. I wanted to make literature come alive and to promote a love for the written word. The students wanted to throw spitballs (纸团)and whisper dirty words in the back of the room.
In college, I had been taught that a successful educator should ignore bad behavior. So I did, confident that, as the textbook had said, the bad behavior would disappear as I gave my students positive attention. But in fact, humans, particularly teenagers, rarely seem reasonable. By the time my boss, who was also my taskmaster, known to be the strictest, most demanding, most quick to fire inexperienced teachers, came into the classroom to observe me, the students exhibited very little good behavior to praise.
My boss sat in the back of the room. The boys in the class were making animal noises, hitting each other while the girls filed their nails or read magazines. I just pretended it all wasn’t happening and went on lecturing and tried to ask some inspiring questions. My boss, sitting in the back of the room, seemed to be growing bigger and bigger. After twenty minutes, he left silently. Visions of unemployment marched before my eyes. I felt mildly proud that I got through the rest of class without crying, but at my next free period, I had to face him.
    注意:1.续写词数应为150左右;
    2.请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
    Paragraph 1:
After class, I walked to his office, took a deep breath and opened the door.

    Paragraph 2:
Inspired by his advice, I walked toward the classroom, determined to make a change.
