Todd Bol, a retired businessman, could never have expected that a wooden container he built in his front yard one day would have the global impact it does today.
Bol built a dollhouse-size structure that looked like a schoolhouse on a post and he put it in his yard as a free community library to remember his mother, who was a book lover and school teacher. Bol’s design gave birth to Little Free Library (LFL), a nonprofit organization that seeks to place small, accessible book exchange boxes in neighborhoods around the world. The concept is simple: Neighbors are invited to share a book, leave a book, or both. Today, there are over 50,000 of these libraries registered in 70 countries.
Almost everyone can register with LFL and start a library as long as the person keeps it in good shape and makes sure that book materials are appropriate for his/her neighborhood. Library owners can create their own library boxes; therefore, the libraries are usually unique in appearance, and there seems to be no limit to the possibilities. One library in California was built out of a used wine container; another in Texas had tiny stairs and bright colored walls. Once registered, libraries are assigned a number at LFL’s website. The LFL Index lists the locations of all libraries with GPS coordinates (坐标) and other information. Owners receive a sign saying “Little Free Library”.
People say they have been attracted to pick up a book when walking by a Little Free Library, out of curiosity and because it’s convenient. Some sidewalk librarians say they have met more neighbors since having a little library in their front yard. Bol is also most proud of the way Little Free Library is bringing communities together. “It’s started a neighborhood exchange. It gets people talking and more comfortable with their neighbors,” he says. “This leads to them helping each other.”
    24. What does the underlined word “design” in Paragraph 2 refer to?
    A. A community center. B. A book exchange box.
    C. A dollhouse on a post. D. A nonprofit organization.
    25. What can we learn about the operation of a Little Free Library?
    A. There is no limit to the selection of books.
    B. The library can come in any shape and color.
    C. The library needs to hire many professional librarians.
    D. The owner must first be assigned a number from the LFL website.
    26. What can be inferred about Little Free Library?
    A. It helps improve GPS functions.
    B. It connects libraries around the world.
    C. It makes reading accessible to the poor all over the world.

The first traffic lights in the United States were installed because of an increase in traveller on the road in the 1920s. Worried about accidents, towns and cities installed traffic towers to help the flow of cars. Officers manned the towers, using whistles and red, green and yellow lights to indicate to drivers when they should stop and go.
Due to the absence of effective traffic signal systems on some streets, it caused risks at intersections. Then, William Potts created the first tricolour, four-directional traffic signal. The very first four-directional traffic light was installed at Woodward Avenue and Fort. But throughout the country, there were still a lot of systems for traffic lights and patterns in place. Since this could end up causing more problems for drivers, the Federal Highway Administration set uniform standards in 1935 for all road signs, pavement markings and traffic signals, requiring them to all use red, yellow and green light indicators.
Red is the colour with the longest wavelength; that means that as it travels through air molecules, it gets diffused(扩散)less than other colour, so it can be seen from a greater distance. Yellow has a shorter wavelength than red but a longer wavelength than green. This means that red is visible the furthest away, yellow in the middle and green the least distance away—a helpful advanced warning for needing to slow or stop. But this could be a coincidence. Red meaning stop originated with train warning lights, and it’s not clear whether that was chosen based on wavelength, contrast against green nature or natural association of red with things like blood. It could be a combination of all three!
Back in the 1900s, some stop signs were yellow because it was too hard to see a red sign in a poorly lit area. Eventually, highly reflective materials were developed, and red stop signs were born. Since yellow can be seen well at all times of the day, school zones, some traffic signs and school buses continue to be painted the colour.
    32. What’s the purpose of installing traffic lights in the 1920s?
    A. To increase the speed of cars. B.To obey the standards of the government.
    C. To reduce traffic jams in towns and cities. D. To improve road safety and efficiency.
    33. What does the underlined word“this”in Paragraph 2 refer to?
    A. The first tricolour,four-directional traffic signal.
    B. The installation of the first traffic signal.
    C. The existence of different traffic lights and patterns.
    D. The absence of traffic signal systems.
    34. What’s the main idea of Paragraph 3?
    A. The differences among the three colour. B. The wavelength of the three colour.
    C. The reasons for choosing red as the stop signal.
    D. The relationship between red colour and its wavelength.
    35. Which may be a disadvantage of red as a stop sign?
    A. It can’t be seen in the distance. B. It is a kind of highly reflective colour.
    C. It is not suitable to be used in school zones. D. It can not be clearly seen in certain surroundings.

【原文】W:I should have studied business in college. I can’t find a job, even though I went to a very good college!
M:Yes, everyone I know who studied business has a job. Why did you decide to study art?
W:I liked Spanish, but I thought I could get a job at a museum if I studied art.

【原文】W:Welcome to York Garden Center! How can I help you?
M:I’m looking for a plant for my mum’s birthday. What’s this one called?
W:Sweet William. Its name comes from the writer William Shakespeare.
M:That’s interesting. What color will the flower be on this one?
W:This type is pink. But there are also types of red and purple.
M:OK. When should I put it outside?
W:Well, it’s August now. Wait until September to put it in the garden.

【原文】W: Do you have any suggestions for getting along with others? It seems that none of my classmates likes me.
M: Is that so serious? Don’t be that sad; at least you have my friendship.
    W: Well, except you.
M: I heard that you and Lucy had a quarrel yesterday.
W: You mean that selfish rich kid?
M: Actually she is kind-hearted, too. Could you tell me why you quarreled?
W: Just for a small thing. Well, I thought she was just a rich princess, but it seems that we have a lot in common.
M: I’m glad you’ve realized that at last. You don’t really hate each other, so why don’t you make up?
W: You mean I say sorry to her first? No, that’s the last thing I want to do.
M: Come on, you can do it.
W: Well, not now, maybe later.
M: OK. It doesn’t matter as long as you do it.
W: Thank you. You helped a lot.

【原文】M: Now, I will assign a few after-class exercises for you. Please open your books and turn to page 167. Have you got it, Mary?
W: Yes, I got it. It’s the short passage, “Grandpa’s Gift” , right?
M: Yes. That’s what I’d like you to read after class and then write a summary, which will need to be handed in next Monday.Any questions?
W: Yes. Mr.Smith,do you have any requirements about the length of the summary?
M: Oh,as it is a summary, I don’t want you to make it very complicated, so keep it short, about 150 words.
W: OK, I understand. I will try to use what we’ve learned today in the summary. Are there any other assignments?
M: Read the text and make sure that you understand the meaning of the text. I suggest you copy the text three times, but you needn’t memorize it. Just try to remember all the new words. Be sure that you know their spelling, pronunciation and meaning.
W: OK, and I will review today’s lesson and learn all the new words by heart.

【原文】M: Did you catch the mouse yet? I know you wanted to get rid of it before your mom comes to stay with you.
W: I didn’t. Two weeks of planning, and nothing. My mom always wants the house to be clean. I don’t want her to know I had a mouse here. She would be so uncomfortable.
M: Well, the traps usually work if you put peanut butter in them. You can take the mouse out to a field and let it go.
W: I bought some of those and tried the peanut butter, but it didn’t really work. It sure did love that peanut butter, though.
M: Well, how about a trap that has glue on it? You could still let it go later.
W: I tried that, too, but I think this is a very small mouse. It didn’t weigh enough to get stuck.
M: What are you going to do?
W: Well, I have one day to catch it. If not, I’ll have to think of a story to tell mom. She’s only here for seven days. Maybe I can start talking about how I lost my little pet mouse.

【原文】 W: You are standing in front of the tallest man-made structure in the world, the Burj Khalifa. It reaches a height of 828 meters. The construction began in 2004, and was finally finished in 2009. One year later, it was officially opened, and remains the most famous building in the main business district. It was designed by a man named Adrian Smith, who also acted as the architect for other famous buildings around the world in countries like Saudi Arabia, the United States, and China. The Burj Khalifa’s chief engineer was Bill Baker, and with the help of thousands of workers from South Asia, they achieved the impossible. It is truly a wonder of engineering. There are a total of 162 floors in the tower. The Armani Hotel occupies fifteen of its floors and has 304 rooms. There are restaurants, swimming pools, company offices, observation decks, and even a mall. The only thing more amazing than staring up at this structure is experiencing it from the inside.
