Thanks for your letter and it’s great to hear from you. China is an ancient country with many places of interest and the one that I recommend you to visit is the Mogao Caves. It comprises tens of thousands of square meters of murals and thousands of sculptures created from the 4th to the 14th century.

I visited the Mogao Caves last year. It was an extraordinary experience to see hundreds of caves carved into a cliff and lavishly decorated with talented masterpieces. As you are a fan of culture, you won't want to miss it.

Confucius was a great philosopher in ancient China who lived over 2000 years ago. His teachings were compiled in a book called "The Analects". The teachings and philosophy of Confucius formed the foundation of Confucianism, which underpins Chinese as well as East Asian culture. He valued moral cultivation, kindness, harmony of family and society, and obligations in relationships, among other things.

Confucius's famous sayings have been passed down for generations. One of his sayings that I particularly like goes, "Learning without thought is labor lost; thought without learning is perilous." It reminds me to think while I learn.

4.剪纸

Paper cutting is one of the oldest Chinese folk arts, dating back about 2,000 years. The cut-outs were traditionally used for window decoration during Chinese New Year, but today, it is more likely to be considered an art form than a decoration.

It is amazing to see the intricate patterns that can be cut out of paper. With great curiosity, I have learned to create some simple paper cuttings myself. I am always amused when I accidentally cut out a different pattern from what I intended. It is both fun and challenging. I would recommend that you give it a try.

Lichun is the first of the 24 solar terms in the Chinese calendar. It usually falls on February 2nd or 3rd, signifying the start of spring. The creation of the 24 solar terms was to divide the sun’s annual circular motion into 24 segments, which shows the wisdom of the ancient Chinese people. It was crucial to agricultural activities, such as when to sow seeds and when to harvest, and remains important in people’s lives today.

Many customs are associated with the special day of Lichun. In many parts of China, people eat pancakes and spring rolls on this day. They also participate in various activities such as painting and calligraphy, and pray for prosperity in the new year.

I am glad to hear that you will be visiting Chengdu. The local cuisine is Sichuan cuisine, which is famous for its strong, spicy and rich flavours. It is very popular all over China.

You can choose from a variety of raw ingredients to cook in the broth and customize your dipping sauce for extra flavour. Additionally, with a pot in the middle filled with simmering broth, it is especially good for group dining.
