A few days ago, my husband, Russ, and I lost our house of 28 years to a California wild fire.

On that night, we had to leave our house and sleep in the back seat of our Ford. The next morning, we had to drive three and a half hours to find a hotel that had an available room. Only later, in the local newspaper, did we see photographs of the destruction. Our house had been consumed by the fire along with most of our neighborhood.

How are we going to rebuild after this? I thought, rounding a corner in the sidewalk on my walk back to the hotel. Is it even possible?

I noticed something up ahead-a pair of nickels, shining like precious jewels. They were just nickels, but they somehow felt special. I bent down and picked them up. If these were lucky coins, I could use all the luck I could get.

A few days later, I made a trip to the store to buy essentials. The enormous task of replacing everything we'd lost put a heavy weight on me. I was about to leave when I felt the urge to stop and turn my head to the right. I could hardly believe it-there on nickels shelf, was a nickel! Okay, maybe this is more than luck, I thought and put the nickel in my pocket.

I told myself that I had found the nickels just by chance. Then I found one next to my plate at a restaurant-on Thanksgiving, no less, when I was missing our house more than ever. It seemed that a nickel appeared whenever my spirits plummeted.

Whenever I reached my breaking point, I'd find another nickel. In the grass at the park, or near the tire of my car in a parking lot. Once, my change for a quick lunch was given entirely in nickels. “I'm sorry,” the cashier said. “It's all we have.”

    It's all I needed!

One day, I was sitting at the desk when my phone rang. It was a real-estate agent I'd been working with.

“I have a new listing,” she said.

    “When can we see it?”

A few hours later, Russ and I were following the agent down the driveway toward the house.

I didn't think long. Because there, in the driveway,...

    B.Hope during challenging times.

C.Signs of a huge fortune to come.

27.Which would be the best ending for the passage?

Not every architectural landmark is grand in scale, with splendid decorations, or amazing colors. Suzhou Gardens may just be the opposite.

When a group of monks during the Yuan Dynasty(1271-1368)first constructed Lion Grove Garden, they may have just wanted to enjoy a quiet place, hidden away from urban noise, while in the following centuries, this charming garden-most notable for its waterside rockeries resembling the shape of lions-has attracted a constant stream of celebrity guests, who have left a long list of poemspaintings and historical anecdotes(轶事).

In recent years, nine of the best-known classical gardens of Suzhou, including Lion Grove Garden, Humble Administrator's Garden and Great Wave Pavilion, were registered into the World Heritage List. As UNESCO remarks," Classical Chinese garden design, which seeks to recreate natural landscapes in miniature(缩略图), is nowhere better illustrated than in the nine gardens, which reflect the profound natural beauty in Chinese culture and inspire people to pursue harmony with the world.”

Nowadays, relevant administrations have been trying to restore the historical landscapes of Suzhou's classical gardens. Consequently, last year, a new project was launched allowing tourists in small groups to reserve places to enter the garden in the early morning before the regular opening time. Their visit ended with them completing the last step in making a traditional folding fan, adding a poem about the garden on its surface. The experience was also regarded as a way to help people understand the wisdom, elegance and philosophical worldview of the ancient Chinese literati(文人).

The delicate beauty of the gardens still flows via the canals that snake across Suzhou. Hardly felt, their strength in shaping the city's character seems to last forever.

28.What's the purpose of building the Lion Grove Garden?

    A.To share historical anecdotes.

    B.To attract celebrity guests.

    C.To enjoy the beautiful scenery.

D.To stay far from the madding crowd.

    29.What do Suzhou Gardens show?

    A. Splendid decorations.

    B. Grand beauty.

    C.Human-nature harmony.

    D.Amazing colors.

30.What can we know about the project from Paragraph 4?

    A.It featured traditional Chinese elements.

B.Small groups without reservation were welcome.

C.Its main aim was to help people approach poems.

D.It was launched when the gardens were open to the public.

31.What can be the best title for the text?

A.Suzhou Gardens,a place of national pride.

B.Suzhou Gardens,a place with natural beauty.

C.Suzhou Gardens, a place that shows the decorations and colors.

D.Suzhou Gardens,a place that reflects the philosophy and culture.

Aeronautics(航空学)specialists from the University of South Australia spent months studying the dragonfly's flight, creating 3D models from digital images, to build a winged drone(无人机).Study leader Javaan Chahl believes that winged drones based on the dragonflys shape and movement will simply be more flexible and energy efficient.

Chahl's team used a special photography technique to classify the wing shapes of 75 different dragonfly species from museum collections. Their wings are long, light and hard. Plus, their long bodies give them excellent stability and balance, making it possible for winged drones to deliver awkward loads and undertake long observation missions.

Investigating the way that dragonflies remain stable during flight actually reveals the techniques they use to get themselves out of tricky situations. Dragonflies are found to be able to perform upside-down backflips to regain balance and normal flight, when they find themselves upside down mid-air.This special skill can even be performed while dragonflies are unconscious, meaning it is a passive stability mechanism similar in concept to planes that are designed to glide to safety with their engines turned off. Engineers are looking to copy dragonfly wings to create safer drones that can right themselves.

Of course, not all attempts to build dragonfly-like drones are successful. TechJet's air vehicle was supposed to operate as an aerial camera, observation and security drone, but it failed before production got underway. Similarly, Insectothopter,  an American dragonfly spy drone built in the 1970 s was deserted.

Yet the principles behind winged drones are solid. In fact, NASA has settled on a nuclear-powered autonomous craft called Dragonfly to explore the surface of Saturn's moon Titan in 2034.NASA's project is actually an air vehicle, rather than a winged drone, but engineers are still convinced they can crack the code of nature's most gifted flying insect and revolutionize unmanned flight along the way.

32.Why did aeronautics specialists spend months studying the dragonfly's flight?

A.To build 3D models from digital images.

B.To make winged drones modelled after it.

C.To clarify the flexibility and efficiency of drones.

D.To display the shape and movement of the dragonfly.

33.The special skill of dragonflies is their ability to

    A.glide to safety

    B.avoid tricky situations

    C.perform observation tasks

    D.adjust themselves to stay stable

34.What is the author's attitude towards winged drones?

    A. Skeptical.

    B. Uncertain.

    C.Supportive.

    D.Conservative.

35.Which can be a suitable title for the text?

A.Winged Drones: Still a Long Way to Go

B.Javaan Chahl:An Innovative Leader of Aeronautics

    C.A Dragonfly's Flying Technique:Perfect for Drones

D.The Code of Nature: A Solution to NASA's Space Exploration

The Nunes's family lived in a friendly community near the woods. It was a normal Wednesday afternoon Mom Araceli Nunes returned home from selling food and drinks along the roadside in Plantersville,Texas. Her business had been fairly profitable and she was happy to see her husband preparing dinner in the kitchen and her 3-year-old son,Christopher Ramirez, playing in the yard. However, when she turned to unload her car, she didn't notice the kid followed a neighbor's dog into the woods.

When they couldn't find Christopher, the panicky family called for help, and within a few hours,48 different agencies arrived to comb through the area around their home. Their entire community started to help find Christopher. Some walked into the forest and others drove farther away.

After days with no sign of the kid, rescuers feared the worst, but Araceli never stopped hoping for her son's safe return. At long last, after four long days and nights, the sheriff received a phone call from a man named Tim Halfin.

Tim Halfin's house was about three miles away.He had heard of the missing boy when he returned home from a business trip. He didn't think a three-year-old could walk that far to where he lived. However,as all the previous searching efforts were in vain, he decided to try his luck around his own house.

Not long after he went out into the woods, he was surprised by what came into his sight. There was Christopher! Aside from being dehydrated and very hungry, the kid was completely unharmed. He was found outside the range where authorities were looking for him,so it's pretty amazing that Tim discovered him.

    Para.1:

When Tim picked him up,the kid was still conscious. He wasn't shaking, neither was he nervous. Tim wrapped the kid with his own jacket and took him home. Not knowing the phone number of the kid's home, he called the sheriff, who informed Araceli in no time. On getting the exciting news,Christopher's family immediately rushed to Tim's house. Araceli couldn't wait to wrap her little one up in her arms and hug him tightly! Tears of happiness rolled down her cheeks.

    Para.2:

Christopher spent two days recovering at Teras Children's Hospital before he was taken home.Seeing Christopher running around the house, the family was extremely grateful to all the agencies and volunteers, who had sacrificed their timeto look for Christopher and shared their panic and worries. They were especially thankful to Tim who didn't give up hope when chances seemed to be slim. They knew it well that they couldn't repay those kind people for what they had done but they decided to pay it forward by lending a helping hand to whoever might be in need of it.

M: It was good. It was fun, and it was...a bit strange, also.

W:What do you mean? I thought you were born in Germany.

M:Actually,I was born in France. My family moved to Germany when I was five,so that's why I call it home.

W:I see.So what was so strange about it?

M:It's hard to explain. I mean,I've only been living here in England for a few years, but I didn't realize how long it's actually been until I saw all my old friends.

    W:Were they different?

M:No,it was me who was different. I expected it to feel like I had never left, but everything felt so unfamiliar to me...like...what is that saying?

W:Like a fish out of water?

M:That's it.Anyway, I promised to stay more in touch with my friends and learn about their lives.

W:Do you think you will ever go back there to work?

M: I don't think so. England is my home now.

    Text 9

M:Our biology test is going to be so hard. I failed last week's test and I'm so afraid of doing the same for this one. I'm going to have to study for hours this week! I'll never make it to basketball practice.

W:I did well on the last test,so I know I'll do well on this week's too. But my soccer team just made it to the final game. I need to practice! If I don't practice, I could be the reason we don't win! It's like when you play baseball in the spring, you guys are always winning and you never have time to study!

M:Yeah,we're actually really good, but I don't want to play anymore. The practice takes up too much time, and it's no longer fun.Besides,my grades are more important to me. Since you can't study after school, would you want to study together during lunch? There's an empty classroom on the first floor.

W:Why not study in the library? There are big tables we can use, and it's in the same building.Just two floors above.

M:The library is too busy. Even though it's quiet, there are too many people. But I just remembered there are study rooms on the second floor.Let's go there instead.

    Text 10

Good morning, students. We have an important announcement to make this morning.Mr.Jenkins,your physical education teacher, will be leaving us after 25 years at Evergreen High School.Together,we have shared many great memories here, and he is a big part of our school's history. He led the boys'basketball team to a championship the last two years and has also helped out with other sports programs.Although we are sad to see him go, we are happy for him, too. He has been a fantastic coach,a teacher, and more importantly,a good friend. He has told us that this decision has been very hard for him. However, his mother has become ill,and it is the right decision for his family. Unfortunately,Mr.Jenkins will not be able to end the year with us, as he is traveling back to his hometown this Friday. This means we won't have time for a proper goodbye celebration, but we hope you will all visit him before he leaves. And finally,to show respect for our good friend, we will be naming the gymnasium “Jenkins' Gym” at the end of the month. Taking over his duties until summer vacation will be our math teacher, Mr.Ryan. We also have a goodbye card you can sign at the office.Thank you for your attention and have a good day.
