    The Superstar Author

Jason Reynolds has written 12 books. He has 31, 000 Instagram followers. And he's traveled around the world to share his stories and poems. But there's something surprising about this superstar author: He was 17 before he read a book cover to cover. “The books we read in school were boring to me, ”he says. “That's the truth. ”

What's Jason's goal today? To write books that aren't boring. That means telling stories about what kids are really going through. We talked to Jason about how he became a best— selling author.

What would you say to a kid who doesn't like reading?

First of all, I'd tell them that it's OK. There's nothing wrong with you. Then I'd ask: What are you interested in? Because if you like video games, you can read books about video games. If you like sports, every newspaper has a sports section. There's more to read than just books. Reading comics counts. Reading rap lyrics(说唱乐歌词)counts.

How did you go from being a kid who didn't like to read to a famous author?

When I was 10, my grandma died. I wrote a poem for my mom because I wanted her to stop crying . She read it at the funeral(葬礼), and I realized how powerful words could be . I wrote my poem like rap lyrics, because that's what I liked. Then it hit me: What rappers do is writing too!

What traits make you a good writer?

I learned how to crochet(用钩针编织)as a kid . That taught me what it takes to write . I learned to pay attention to the details and be patient. I also learned to work hard until something is finished. And it's such a good feeling to finish something!

Anything else you want to tell Action readers?

Let them know that I love them. I'm serious, no joke. Tell them “Jason Reynolds really loves you. ”

    21. What's Jason's goal today?

    A. To become a superstar author.    B. To write interesting story books for kids.

    C. To win more Instagram followers.  D. To travel around the world.

    22. When did Jason realize words had great power?

    A. When he was interviewed by the writer.

    B. When he could read a book cover to cover.

    C. When his poem was read at his grandma's funeral.

    D. When he became a best-selling author in his country.

    23. What did Jason learn from his crochet?

    A. How to play video games.  B. How to read rap lyrics.

    C. How to own a good feeling.  D. How to be patient and careful about the details.

In high school, I used to envy(羡慕)the students who sat at the front of the class, raising their hands for every question, and getting good grades on their work. The voice in my head asked, “Why am I not as good as them?” This' phenomenon(现象)is called the “comparison trap. ”From my point, I only saw their best moments, the fruits of their labor, without considering the sacrifices(牺牲)they made to achieve it .

What's a student to do? This is where organization, prioritizing, and asking for help all comes together. I always set aside enough time to study, write down any questions I had while studying, and wait until the lecture to see if my instructor covers them. If any of my questions wasn't answered or remained unclear I knew I could ask my professor for clarification. Instead of envying the star student and comparing myself to him/her, I found a way to compare my past behaviors to the student I am today. Over the past two and a half years, I have improved this method and found that it has been the driving force in my success. It required me to do two things:

    1. Recognize my opportunity cost, that is: sacrifice some of my free time now in pursuit of a more successful future.

    2. Find others around me(like professors, tutors, students, and colleagues)that I could approach and ask for help or clarification.

I understand how difficult some of my recommendations might be for some to carry out, but try . Getting help, being prepared, and evaluating(评估)your personal progress as a student can be a clear path to success. I hope these tips will help guide you in pursuit of your academic goals.

    28. According to the writer, what's the phenomenon of “comparison trap”?

    A. Comparing one's past behavior to the present.

    B. Envying star students and comparing oneself to them.

    C. Envying the students sitting at the front of the class.

    D. Admiring the students always raising their hands.

    29. What should you avoid doing while studying?

    A. Getting help if necessary.    B. Being prepared at any time.

    C. Evaluating your progress.    D. Leaving some difficult questions aside.

    30. What kind of person is the writer now?

    A. Envious and negative.     B. Envious but hard-working.

    C. Hard-working and well-organized.  D. Negative but helpful.

    31. What's the purpose of the passage?

    A. To tell us how to ask for help.

    B. To describe a common phenomenon.

    C. To introduce how to find the driving force.

    D. To offer some tips on how to succeed in study.

During the festivities, there are dancing dragon performances, as the creature is believed to bring good luck, good fortune, and prosperity(繁荣) . Flowers, tangerines, and oranges are displayed as a sign of good luck and wealth. Decorations are Red, made of paper and shaped like a diamond(钻石), and usually have writings on them referring to luck and prosperity.

    32. What does the underlined words taboos mean in paragraph 1?

    A. Something that is used to smoke.

One young academically excellent person went to apply for a managerial position in a big company. In the last interview, the director discovered from the CV(简历)that the youth's academic achievements were very excellent.

The director asked whether he had obtained any scholarships in school. The youth shook his head. The director then asked, “Was it your father who paid for your school fees?” The youth answered, “My father passed away when I was one year old; it was my mother who paid for my school fees. ”

The director continued to ask some questions like his mom's occupation and her working hours. Knowing that she was a clothes cleaner, the director wanted to see his hands. Having seen a pair of perfect hands, the director questioned further whether he had helped his mother wash the clothes before. The youth shook his head, saying that his mother always wanted him to study more and read more books, so she dealt with such things all by herself. In the end, The director said, “I have a request. When you go back today, go and clean your mother's hands, and then see me tomorrow morning. ”

When he went back, he made a request that he clean his mother's hands. His mother felt a little surprised, but with mixed feelings, she still showed her hands to the kid. Seeing his mother's rough and cracked hands, his tears rolled down his cheeks. At that moment, he suddenly realized how much his mom had suffered. He couldn't imagine the extreme coldness and great pain his mother received while washing endless clothes those years. Just in this way, he could focus on his study in the warm room. Firstly, it’s important for you to warm up properly before running. Then, you’d better not run too fast for the first hour in case you have no enough energy for the rest of the race. Last, after a long run, you might as well jog slowly for ten minutes, and then walk five more minutes, which may help to relax your body.

I sincerely hope my suggestions will be of benefit to you. Good luck to you!    Yours, Li Hua

Next morning, the youth went to the director’s office with tears in his eyes. Seeing the director busy with his papers, he wanted to leave quietly. He was just about to leave when the director stopped to ask whether he’d like to say something. The youth gathered all his courage to share his discovery. Lost in his feelings, he didn’t notice the director stand up. Having heard the story, the director patted him on the shoulder, asking whether he had the honor to meet his mother.

Seeing the great mother, the director ran up and shook hands with her gently. He noticed her hands, just like his own mother’s, were very rough and stiff with years of hard work. He knew it was this pair of hands that helped the youth to be what he was. Moved by such a selfless mother, he finally made the decision. Without any hesitation, he took out the contract. Excited and grateful, the youth and his mother thanked the director. Seeing the youth and his mother out of his sight, the

director called his mom, saying he would go to visit her soon.

    录音原文

    Text 1

W: It’s very cold outside. Can I borrow your sweater, Uncle Eddy? I gave my coat to a friend.

M: OK. Take my gloves, too. They will keep you warm.

    Text 2

W: Never again! I thought I would get some exercise and cycle to your house, but now I’m tired. Even walkers were passing me.

M: I wonder why you didn’t take the bus as usual.

    Text 3

W: I can’t connect to the Wi-Fi. I think my phone is broken.

M: No, the whole network is down. I thought my mom had turned it off to make me study.

    Text 4

W: I can’t drive to the party if there will be a storm.

M: Why? Do you think the roads will be too dangerous? If we go slowly, we will be fine.

W: No. It’s because I don’t see well in the rain.

    Text 5

M: You ate your dinner in a hurry. Were you really that hungry? I didn’t think you liked chicken so much.

W: I didn’t get a chance to eat the chicken sandwich at noon. A dog was watching it and the next second I looked, my lunch was gone.

    Text 6

W: We hear a lot about electric cars and buses. But we never hear about electric ships and planes, do we?

M: Funny you should say that. An electric passenger ship has just started sailing on the Yangtze River.

W: Really? What is it like?

M: It can carry 300 passengers and it is very quiet. Obviously, it does not pollute.

    W: It must be big.

M: It weighs 410 tons. It is 53 meters long. So yes, it is quite large.

W: Will it have a high speed and be more comfortable?

M: Not particularly, but because it doesn’t use gas, it will be better for the environment.

    Text 7

M: Papa’s Pizza. This is John speaking. Can I take your order?

W: Yes, do you have any specials tonight?

M: We have two medium pizzas for $22, one large and one small for $18, and two extra large pizzas for $30. Each of the specials comes with a large soda.

W: OK. I think I’ll take the cheapest one.

M: OK. What toppings would you like on them?

W: Beef and onions on the big one. Mushrooms and green olives on the small one, please.

M: OK. You can pick them up in 25 minutes.

    Text 8

M: How are you enjoying your visit to the UK, Li Jing?

W: I am enjoying that visit too much.

M: Now, you should say, “I am enjoying my visit very much.”

W: Ah yes, my English is not always so good. I am very sorry.

M: Your English is very good-a lot better than my Chinese. And you are very polite. English people like those who are as polite as them.

W: Thanks. Well, I like English food. Fish and chips are very good. I’m supposed to eat them with a knife and fork. Sometimes I feel a bit strange.

M: That’s great. Fish and chips are actually quite expensive these days, especially for a student like you.

W: Yes, that is a problem.

M: Maybe when you are a rich businesswoman or a chef, you can come back and open your own fish and chips shop.

    W: Ha-ha, yes. I will do it.

    Text 9

M: I’m looking for a pet for my son’s 6th birthday next week.

W: We have lots of animals. Do you have anything in mind?

M: Something that is easy to look after. He is not old enough.

W: Then fish are perfect. You just need to feed them once a day and clean their tank once a week.

M: I was thinking of something bigger, but not a dog or a cat. My wife is allergic to them.

W: What about a rabbit? Is she allergic to it?

M: No, I don’t think so. But I used to have 10 rabbits when I was a kid. They were a lot of work.

W: Have you thought about a snake?

M: That sounds great. My friend has one. My son is very fond of it.

W: They have a bad reputation but they are lovely creatures. We have 12 different species now.

M: Do you have any green ones? That’s his favorite color.

W: We do. Let me show you them.

    Text 10

M: Hello, everyone. This is my daily routine since I have been unable to go outside because of the virus. I still get up at 7:00 a.m. even though I don’t have to go to work. I don’t want to become lazy and sleep in. I have a daily call at 9:00 a.m. with our senior management team. We are trying our best to work from home on our laptops. At 10:00 a.m. I used to get a cake from the shop, but now I can’t. I’m trying to eat less so my food supply lasts longer. I usually go running in the gym. Now I have to walk in the garden and lift weights in the living room. I am very glad I live alone. I can often hear my neighbors fighting because they are stuck in a small apartment together. I speak to my family every evening through video calls. I have set up a chatroom with my friends so we can chat online from time to time. The virus might have stopped us going outside, but it hasn’t stopped us being social. In fact, now I’ve got the time to contact people I haven’t seen in ages.
