    一、完形填空

(2021·上海徐汇·统考二模)The bus was filled with excitement. Students were talking and laughing, but there was also a bit of _____1_____ energy in the air. As the bus pulled into the parking lot at the television studio, Mr. Osaka cleared his throat.

“I want to thank each one of you for your hard work. I know that many of you have had to put other activities on hold for the training. Whether or not our Sunshine Middle School wins today’s competition, I’m proud of you all,” Mr. Osaka continued. “It’s a great honor just to be on Quiz Power. Just do your best and enjoy yourselves today. No matter what, we’re all going home _____2_____.

The members of the team _____3_____ as Mr. Osaka finished his speech. As they headed for the doors of the bus, several students stopped to thank Mr. Osaka for his commitment to the team. The students knew they were ready for almost any question the quizmaster might ask. They couldn’t wait to get started.

Inside the studio, the students were met by Anna, the show’s executive producer. Anna was tall, friendly woman.

“I am sure you’ve already heard this a hundred times today,” she told the room of expectant students, “but the most important thing you can do during the competition is to relax and have fun. Do your best to ignore the cameras and the audience. Once the host has finished asking a question, you will want to ring your buzzer (蜂鸣器) as soon as you think you have the answer. _____4_____, you may not ring in until the entire question has been read. People are likely to speak more quickly when they are nervous, so just try to answer slowly and calmly when it’s your turn.” Ann paused and smiled at the students who were beginning to look tense. “Do you have any questions before we begin?”

Gabriel, a seventh-grader from Sunshine, waved his hand. “Will the winning team come back to compete for the championship (冠军赛)?” he asked _____5_____, with hope in his eyes.

Ann nodded. “The championships are held in the spring. The winning team in the final will receive $1,000. The winning school will also receive two brand-new computers.”

“Any more questions?” Ann asked. The students were silent, _____6_____ the task ahead of them.

    London’s burning

The Great Fire of London started at around 1:00 a.m. on 2nd September, 1666. The fire started in the home of a baker named Thomas Farynor (Farriner), located on London’s Pudding Lane.

Thomas wasn’t an ____7____ baker. Actually, he was King Charles II’s baker.

The fire brought complete damage to the city of London. In 17th century London, not only were buildings made from wood and straw, but they stood very close together, making it easy for fire to ____8____. Warehouses (仓库) around Pudding Lane contained materials such as oil and rope which soon caught fire! Within just a few hours, London Bridge by the River Thames was burning. For the next four days, almost the whole city was on fire.

Instead of fighting the fire, people’s first reaction was to get away as quickly as possible. In a state of great ____9____, they collected all the belongings they could carry and ran.

Back then, there was no fire station in London. Local soldiers as well as local people did the best they could with the limited equipment they had.

It wasn’t until Tuesday, 4th September that the fire was brought under control. And by Thursday the fire was finally put out. Most of what we know about the Great Fire of London came from the ____10____ of two men called Samuel Pepys and John Evelyn, who both left detailed descriptions of this famous tragedy (悲剧). A third of the city had been destroyed! About 13,200 houses and 87 churches were burned to the ground. ____11____, only six official deaths were recorded, but the actual figure is likely to be much higher. With 70,000 people left homeless, theft and other crimes swept what was left of the city, as well as sickness and disease.

There is no doubt that the Great Fire was an awful tragedy–but it did lead to some nice changes to London. The city was rebuilt in a safer and more organized way, ____12____ such a disaster would not happen again. Streets were made wider, and buildings were made from brick or stone (rather than wood), with better access to water. What’s more, London’s first fire brigades were formed!

    8.A.arrive B.keep C.spread D.pass

    9.A.fun B.fear C.interest D.pain

(2022·上海徐汇·统考二模)You have waited 45 minutes for the valuable 10 minutes’ break between classes. But when the bell for the next class rings, you can’t believe how ____13____ time has passed.

If you are familiar with this scene, you’ll know how time flies when you are having fun. Now scientists have thought over a reason why this is the case.

Scans (扫描仪) have shown that patterns of activity in the brain ____14____ according to how we focus on a task. When we feel ____15____, we concentrate (专心于) more on how time is passing. And this makes our brains think the clock is ticking more slowly.

In an experiment carried out by a French laboratory, 12 volunteers watched an image while researchers monitored their brain activity.

The volunteers were told to first concentrate on ____16____ an image appeared for, then focus on the colour of the image, and thirdly, study both duration and colour. The results showed that the ____17____ was more active when the volunteers paid attention to more subjects.

It is thought that if the brain is focusing on many aspects of a task, it has to spread its resources, and pays ____18____ attention to the clock. Therefore, time passes without us really noticing it, and seems to go quickly. If the brain is not so active, it concentrates its full energies on monitoring the passing of time. As a result, time seems to drag.

Next time you feel bored in class, perhaps you should pay more attention to what the teacher is saying!

    13.A.slowly B.quickly C.terribly D.foolishly

    14.A.change B.develop C.grow D.stop

    15.A.interested B.bored C.excited D.active

    16.A.how often B.how soon C.how long D.how fast

    17.A.time B.experiment C.clock D.brain

    18.A.much B.more C.some D.less
