Although popular beliefs regarding emotional intelligence run far ahead of what research can reasonably support, the overall effects of the publicity have been more beneficial than harmful. The most positive aspect of this popularization is a new and much needed emphasis (重视) on emotion by employers, educators and others interested in promoting social well-being. The popularization of emotional intelligence has helped both the public and researchers re-evaluate the functionality of emotions and how they serve people adaptively in everyday life.

    1. What is the authors attitude to the popularization of emotional intelligence?

    A. Favorable. B. Intolerant.

    C. Doubtful. D. Unclear.

    (二)

Forest ecologists have called earthworms ecosystem engineers because they can change or create habitats that otherwise would not be present. Whether this is a good thing depends on the situation.

What the earthworms do and how we value it is what really matters. said Hale. In one place-farm fields or gardens-we really like European earthworms and what they do, so we consider them good. In native hardwood forests, we really dont like what they do-so we consider them bad. You really have to understand how an organism(微生物) affects an ecosystem. Things arent black and white.

2What is Hale’s attitude towards invasive earthworms?

    AObjective. BPositive.

    CAmbiguous. DDoubtful.

To be clearer, I was a terrible kid, living in the mean streets of Philadelphia, where I frequently got involved with street gangs (一帮年轻人) and did horrible things I regret today. I was failing out of high-school and had no future prospects. The only music type I listened to at the time was rap and R&B, but classical music never crossed my ear.

I experienced Italian hospitality first-hand on a crowded railway carriage travelling, one afternoon, from Genoa to Florence.Sinking gratefully into an empty seat,I was berated (训斥) in rapid Italian by a gentleman who was returning to this seatit had not been spare after all.I apologized in English, and got up to allow him back into the seat. The gentleman obviously had no understanding of the English language, but he,too, realized my genuine mistake. He smiled and gestured for me to remain in the seat, and he himself remained standing in the corridor for the remainder of the journey. The other occupants of the carriage smiled and nodded at me and made me feel quite welcome amongst them.I feel that if this had been in England,a foreigner who made a mistake would not always be so kindly treated.

According to the Global Times,it is reported that two online videos showing children telling their parents I love you have gone viral in China. The first, filmed by an Anhui TV station, shows a number of college students telling their parents they love them. The responses are mixed. Are you drunk? asked one parent. In another similar video, shot by a Shanxi TV station,a father responded even less patiently I am going to a meeting,so cut the crap.

Why dont Chinese families use those words?Theories revolve around the nature of Confucian teaching. The parents responses show that many Chinese are not good at expressing positive emotions, Xia Xueluan,a sociologist from Beijing University, told the Global Times. They are used to educating children with negative language.

This isnt the first time that China has done some soul-searching about familial love last year China Daily asked a cross-section of people if they said I love you to their parents, spouses(配偶),and children.I have never said I love you to my family, and I dont think I will in the future, one 56-year-old told the paper.Saying it aloud is embarrassing for me.

Still, that doesnt mean that love cant be expressed. In a separate article,China Daily spoke to Zhao Mengmeng,a 31-year-old woman who said she had never told her father she loved him face-to-face (I find it a bit odd).Sometimes actions speak louder than words.Zhao gave her father a photo album featuring photographs of them together on almost every one of her birthdays in June 2012.The pictures went viral online, being forwarded hundreds of thousands of times on Weibo.

I didnt sleep the night I heard about it, her father told China Daily after the story attracted mainstream attention.I have now memorized some of the comments on the collection of pictures.

1What is the writers attitude toward eating together as a family?

    A.Favourable.               B.Disapproving.

    C.Reserved.               D.Objective.

In a few weeks The Hill Farm will belong to another family.Getting every last item out of The Hill Farm will be difficult. When I was packing up boxes and other belongings,my stomach clenched(收紧) at the thought that this rare and beautiful home will no longer be our familys. But it is time to let go.As author Juan Nakamori wrote,If you have been grasping onto something, try to let it go.Your empty hands will be ready to receive a new gift.”I am not sure what this new gift will be.Perhaps the pleasure will include seeing more lights in the windows, activities on the farm, and even getting to know the new family.

As BeiDou expands its overseas reach,it will be increasingly popular in the logistics(物流) industry, said Miao Qianjun,secretary-general of the navigation services association.Ships, for example, can use it to position themselves while sailing across oceans to European countries,no longer limited to Southeast Asian regions in the near future.

The Massachusetts General Hospital researchers are now recruiting( 招募) volunteers for a larger study to confirm their findings. It is well recognized that early diagnosis and intervention are likely to produce the most effective therapeutic strategy for Alzheimer s disease, preventing the attack or the progression of symptoms," Albers said.If these results hold up, this sort of inexpensive screening could help us identify the best candidates for therapies to prevent the development of symptoms of this terrible disease .

We just haven't been willing to do what needs to be done,”said Deborah A.P. Hersman, president of the National Safety Council.

The National Safety Council data shows a 6 percent increase in deaths in 2018 when compared with 2015 and a 3 percent increase in the number of miles Americans drove in 2016.

1.What's Hersman's attitude towards the present situation?

    A.It has been getting better.

    B.It can hardly be improved.
