Two years ago, Nikki Tysoe rarely got on a bike. Today, though, she’s become so addicted to the cycling world that she’s even helping to bring pedal power to mental-health nurses at the hospital where she works.

In April, the National Lottery-funded charity Access Sport introduced a program that provides bikes to Tower Hamlets’ Royal London Hospital. Nikki pushed for this to be extended to Goodmayes Hospital, a mental-health facility in northeast London where she’s a project manager. She says having the bikes not only enables nursing staff to travel safely to and from work during the coronavirus crisis, but also lets them blow off steam during their breaks.

Nikki wanted to do something to make life a bit better for the staff. There’s a lot of focus on the hospitals at the moment which are having an awful time but this is also an extra-stressful time for mental health staff. The bikes provide a complement to a “wobble room” within the hospital. It’s somewhere the staff can go when they’re really stressed, and the bikes are an extension of that.

Junior doctor Aiman is very grateful for the program. “Using the bike means I can get to work safely,” she says. “This has taken out a lot of worries from my daily life and allows me to focus on my patients. It’s definitely improved my mental wellbeing.” Stress levels are generally high in nursing and having bikes would make a big difference.

While Access Sport has provided Nikki with bikes, her dream is to have three or four bicycles permanently on site. Following the success of the bike loans, Nikki is working to extend the project beyond lockdown.

    4. Why did Nikki want to extend the program to Goodmayes Hospital?

    A. To guarantee traffic safety.

    B. To make her hobby known.

    C. To get nurses to cycle for health.

    D. To fight against the coronavirus crisis.

    5. What might a nurse feeling stressed do in a “wobble room”

    A. Attend to patients.

    B. Reflect on the work.

    C. Listen to music and relax.

    D. Receive professional training.

    6. What can we infer about the program according to doctor Aiman?

    A. It meets challenges.

    B. It is a great success.

    C. It boosts sales of bikes.

    D. It is popular among patients.

    7. Which of the following best describes Nikki?

    A. Caring. B. Demanding. C. Ambitious. D. Generous.

    C

The Royal Botanical Gardens, Kew, in the UK, are home to thousands of fascinating plants, but none are as lonely as the Encephalartos woodii, an ancient cycad (苏铁门植物) species and, most likely, the last one of its kind.

It was in 1895 that botanist John Wood noticed this interesting looking palm tree on a steep slope in southern Africa. Spellbound by its multiple trunks and arched palm fronds (苏铁类植物的叶), Dr. Wood —who made his living collecting rare plants — had some stems removed and sent to London in a box. It ended up in the Palm House at the Royal Botanical Gardens, where it has been waiting for a mate for over a century. Despite numerous efforts to find it a mate, the Encephalartos woodii at Kew remains alone, unable to produce an offspring (后代) and reproduce its species. For this reason, many consider it the world’s loneliest plant.

Two hundred million years ago, when dinosaurs still roamed the world, cycads were everywhere. They made up around 20% of plants, acted as shelter for some dinosaur species and as food supply for others. They managed to somehow survive five ice ages, adapted to coexist with new species of plants, but as time passed, their numbers dwindled. Like all other cycads, Encephalartos woodii went from numbering millions of specimens, to thousands, and today, possibly just one, a male.

Some plants have both male and female organs, but not Encephalartos woodii. Without a female specimen to produce the seeds, it can never mate.

The Encephalartos woodii is technically not the last of its kind. It has been cloned several times, and its clones can be found in several botanical gardens around the world. It can even mate with some closely related species, but it can’t produce a true offspring. It just sits there, the last of its ancient species waiting for a female species to be found somewhere on Earth. "Surely this is the loneliest organism in the world," biologist Richard Fortey once wrote, "growing older, alone, and fated to have no successors. Nobody knows how long it will live. "

    8. What can we learn about the Encephalartos woodii?

    A. It has been the last of its species for centuries.

    B. It once was a common being with male and female organs.

    C. Scientists’ efforts to produce any young of it were in vain.

    D. It used to play an important role in the survival of dinosaurs.

    9. What does the underlined word "dwindled" probably mean in paragraph 3?

    A. Weakened. B. Declined. C. Multiplied. D. Rocketed.

    10. Which of the following best describes Richard Fortey’s attitude to the plant?

    A. Sympathetic. B. Appreciative. C. Indifferent. D. Tolerant.

    11. What is the best title for this text?

    A. The World’s Loneliest Plant

    B. The Last Cycad on Earth

    C. The Plant That Outlived Dinosaurs

    D. The Ancient Cycad found by John Wood

    D

There is a time when many Americans question whether a college degree is worth its cost. However, a recent study found Americans who completed college or university are more likely to have friends and are less lonely than those who only finished high school.

Daniel Cox, director of the Survey Center on American Life, said that in general Americans are experiencing a “friend recession”, meaning a decline in their number of friends. Cox noted “Americans have fewer close friends today than we did in the early 90s. But men and those without a college degree were particularly affected because they seem to have experienced a much more dramatic decline over that period.”

The Center questioned 5,054 people this past summer. It found Americans with a college degree feel more socially connected and are more active in their communities than people who didn’t go to college. As a result, those who completed college report feeling less lonely.

Previous research showed that Americans who didn’t go to college are less likely to marry. A 2012 study found that college-educated women were much more likely to get married than women who dropped out of high school. A 2013 study of people born between 1957 and 1964 found that both men and women who didn’t finish high school were less likely to marry than those with more education.

Today, 65 percent of college-educated Americans over age 25 are married. About 50 percent of people with a high school diploma, or who dropped out of high school, are married. Those numbers were different in 1990, when marriage rates among the college educated were at 69 percent, compared with 63 percent for those who did not go to college, says a Pew research report.

The American Community Life Survey found around 1 in 10 college graduates say they have no close social connections. That number rises among Americans without a degree, where almost 1 in 4 say they have no close friends.

    12. According to the text, the study was carried out when ______.

    A. psychological problems arose sharply

    B. the number of college graduates declined

    C. Americans experienced a friend recession

    D. concerns about college costs appeared

    13. Why are some studies mentioned in paragraph 4?

    A. To provide evidence for the research.

    B. To analyze the reasons for loneliness.

    C. To show the importance of marriage.

    D. To compare differences in generations.

    14. In which column of a magazine may this text appear?

    A. Entertainment. B. Education. C. Technology. D. Health.

    15. What is the text mainly about?

    A. Social problems in the American society.

    B. Reasons for Americans’ low marriage rates.

    C. Links between education and social interaction.

    D. Discussions about whether to get a college degree.

    第二节(满分25分)

    阅读下面材料, 根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段, 使之构成一篇完整的短文。

George Ellet had a bright silver dollar for a New year gift.

On the way to the store, he thought of all the fine things he might buy with the dollar.

The ground was all covered with snow; but the sun shone out bright, and everything looked beautiful.

So, George put on his hat, and ran into the street. As he went skipping along, he met some boys throwing snowballs. George soon engaged in the sport.

He sent a ball at James Mason, but it missed him, and broke a window on the other side of the street.

George feared someone would come out of the house and find him. So, he ran off as fast as he could. As soon as he got around the next corner, George stopped, because he was very sorry for what he had done.

He said to himself, “I have no right to spend my silver dollar, now. I ought to go back, and pay for the glass I broke with my snowball.”

He went up and down the street, and felt very sad. He wished very much to buy something nice. He also wished to pay for the broken glass.

At last he said, “It was wrong to break the window, though I did not mean to do it. I will go and pay for it, if it takes all my money, I will try not to be sorry. I do not think the man will hurt me if I pay for the mischief I have done.”

George started off, and felt much happier for having made up his mind to do what was right.

He rang the doorbell. When the man came out, George said, “Sir, I threw a snowball through your window. But I did not intend to do it. I am very sorry, and wish to pay you. Here is the dollar my father gave me as a New year gift.”

    注意:

    1. 续写词数应为150左右;

    2. 请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。

The gentleman took the dollar, and asked George if he had no more money.

When dinner was over, Mr. Ellet told George to go and look in his hat.
