“找—定—记”三字妙解定语从句

 定语从句点多面广，但是规律性很强，不妨用“找—定—记”三字来破解。

口诀：一找先行词，二定句子成分，三记特殊用法

例1. We’re just trying to reach a point ____ both sides will sit down together and talk.

A. where     B. that      C. when      D. which

【分析】第一步先找先行词，应该是a point；第二步，确定先行词在定语从句的句子成分。思路是先看定语从句有无主语或宾语，有或者不需要的话则应考虑状语。本句中both sides是主语，sit down和talk都是不及物动词（短语），不能接宾语，因此只能考虑使用状语，point强调抽象地点概念，故用where。因此本题答案是A。

例2. Mary was much kinder to Jack than she was to the others,      , of course, made all the others upset.

A. who        B. which       C. what       D. that

【分析】第一步先找先行词，本句先行词是整个主句而不是从句的一部分；第二步，定语从句中of course是插入语，从句缺少主语；第三步，记住一些特殊用法，比如说what不能用于定语从句，排除C；that不能引导非限制性定语从句，排除D；who的先行词只能是人，排除A。因此本题答案是B。

妙解“介词+关系代词”中介词的选择

“介词+关系代词”中介词的选择是每年高考必考要点，不少考生总是感到困惑，希望这则口诀能够助你一臂之力。

定语从句“介词+关系代词”结构中，先行词指人用whom，指物用which，二者作介词的宾语。那么介词的选择应遵循这一原则：

口诀：一看先行词，二看从句谓语动词，三看整个语境。

请看第一组：

Do you remember the day        which we first met?

Do you remember the month        which we first met?

 [分析] 这两句除了先行词不同外，其余完全一样。然而正是先行词的不同用法决定了介词的不同。在具体某一天应用on；在具体某月应用in。

 再看第二组：

 This is the skirt        which she paid $100.

This is the skirt        which she spent $100.

 [分析] 这两句除了从句谓语动词不同外，其余完全一样。而两个谓语动词的搭配各不相同：pay money for sth, spend money on sth.，故答案是for, on。

 请看第三组：

 His glasses,        which he could see nothing, fell to the ground and broke.

Galileo built a telescope,         which he could study the universe.

 [分析] 这两句话都需要整个句子的语境来判断介词的选择。第一句意为：他的眼镜掉在地上碎了，没有眼镜他什么也看不见。故用without。第二句意为：伽利略制造一副望远镜，通过它他能够研究宇宙。介词through表示“通过某一空间”，故用through。

 注意，有时“介词+关系代词”演化为“介词+关系代词+名词”结构，关系代词whose常用于这一结构。如：

 This is my English teacher, with whose help I’ve made great progress.  

 Mr Smith, in whose company my father is working as a clerk, is on business abroad.
