This week,our topic is pollution. What are the answers to all of our pollution problems? We asked two experts to give their views.

Forest Smith is a member of Green First,an environmental group. Our future on the Earth looks very bad. We are dumping waste on our land. We can’t breathe the fresh air. The sea is polluted too.

I visited some relatives recently in a small village. They grow their own food and cycle everywhere. They are not wealthy,but they are happy and healthy.

We must close the factories producing useless products. That will reduce rubbish and air pollution. We must recycle more,give up all cars and improve public transport.

A big problem is overpopulation in big cities. We must give up big cities and factories and go back to a simple way of life.

John Green is a scientist at a university. Things are not as bad as Forest says. We’ll have a bright future. We don't need to give up cars but we need to invent better,cleaner engines.

This won’t stop the problem of traffic jams. So we need better public transport. We should also recycle more.

But some things are getting better. My sister returned last month after living abroad for five years. She said ,“Our old neighbourhood doesn’t look the same as before —it is cleaner and greener now.

 Most people have jobs. They go to work nearly every day. Some people are lucky. Either they have very interesting jobs or they make a lot of money. Most people are not so lucky. Either their jobs are not very interesting or they don't make much money.

 The most interesting jobs are often the most difficult. People take a long time to learn how to do them. Doctors study for at least six years after finishing school.

 Some young people have interesting and high-pay jobs. Many young players do their work successfully. Football and tennis stars are usually under 35 Years old. Older people usually cannot play these sports very well. They cannot move fast enough. Golf, however is a good sport for older people. Many golf players are quite old, but they can play it successfully.

 Most people work until they are 60 or 65 years old. Then they retire(退休)and have a lot of free time. Some people never retire though. These people usually have very interesting jobs. Writers, artists, scientists and actors(演员)usually work until they die. Their work is their life.

When you are in England, you must be very careful in the streets because the traffic goes on the left. Before you cross the street, you must look to the right first and then the left. If the traffic lights are red, the traffic must stop. Then the people on foot can cross the road. If the lights are green, the traffic can go and people on foot mustn’t cross. In the morning and in the evening when people go to or come back from work, the streets are very busy. The traffic is the most dangerous then.

When you go by bus in England, you have to be careful, too. You must always remember the traffic moves on the left. So you must be careful. Have a look first, or you’ll go the wrong way. In many English cities, there are big buses with two floors. You must sit on the second floor. From there you can see the city very well. That’ll be very interesting.

 In classes, your teachers will talk about topics that you are studying. The information they provide will be important for you to know when you take notes. So you must be able to take good written notes from what your teachers say.

Here are the three stages of taking notes and what you should do during each stage.

1. Before Class

Review your notes you have taken before you come to class. This will be good for remembering what was covered. Get you ready to understand new information your teacher will provide.

2. During Class

Keep your attention on what your teacher is saying and ‘the signal words’ that tell you what your teacher is going to say and it is important to write in your notes. Examples of signal words are ‘The most important point...’ and ‘Remember that...’. Be sure to include in your notes information that your teacher repeats or writes on the blackboard. Write quickly so that you can include all the important information in your notes. Do this by writing abbreviations such as med for medicine, using symbols such as % for percent, and writing short sentences.

3. After Class

Review your notes to make them more complete and accurate by changing abbreviations into whole words, symbols into words, and shortened sentences into longer sentences. Use them to answer your questions. If necessary, ask your teacher for help.

Sue and Jim were neighbors for five years but they were never interested in each other. Then one day, Sue saw Jim’s music collection. She noticed a rare punk rock CD that she also owned. At that moment, she realized that they both had the same interest in music and they started talking. Sue said, “I thought we had nothing in common until I saw his CD by the New York Dolls.” They are now married and living with each other.

Some psychologists (心理学家) think that your taste in music is related to (有联系的) your personality. As part of a test at the University of Texas, Austin, USA, volunteers created a CD of their favorite songs. The volunteers then listened to each other’s CDs and made guesses about the CD creator’s personality—outgoing, adventurous, happy, and so on. These strangers correctly guessed much more about each others’ personalities through their CDs than through their clothes or taste in films. For example, Sue and Jim love punk music, which means they have outgoing personalities.

The psychologists who did the test found Snoop Dogg (hip-hop) fans are likely to be energetic and talkative. People who like U2 (rock/pop music) are generally independent and adventurous.

The psychologists also found that Louis Armstrong(jazz) fans tend to(倾向于) be shy. The psychologists were surprised to find that rap and heavy metal fans were also shier and quieter than many other music lovers.

Why should students play sports? Some people think that students play sports in order to get exercise. Others think it can help students have fun. But that is not enough. If students play sports, they can get more than healthy bodies. Why? Here are three more reasons.

Students who play sports do better in school. Some people think that doing exercise will take up students’ study time. But a recent study has shown that students who play sports get better scores in school than those who don’t. Exercise gets students to learn, remember things and concentrate better.

Students who play sports develop their teamwork spirits and learn problem-solving skills. When they are working together with others to win games and reach goals, they’re learning how to be successful in practice. And these skills will be useful to them for study or their future work.

Playing sports can also improve confidence. Students who play sports feel better about themselves. When they know they can improve and reach their goals by practicing, it builds their confidence. And sports can also help them communicate with others actively and make new friends.
