    Grand Opening

    Bentwood Truck Museum

    Saturday, November 8, at 10:00 A. M.

After eighteen months of hard work by more than 100 volunteers, the Bentwood Truck Museum is ready to open. The old factory had been scheduled to be destroyed. When Roger Haygood heard about the plans to tear down the building, he bought it so that he could store his collection of old trucks there. Then he had the idea of turning the building into a truck museum.

During the past year and a half, the old building has been transformed into a treasure chest of memories. Instead of a dark and dull house, the building has become a cheery, bright home for all kinds of trucks from the past. The museum now houses 68 trucks, and we hope to have even more soon. There is a 1959 school bus, a 1942 bakery truck, and a 1937 fire engine. Our oldest vehicle is a 1919 milk truck. Our newest vehicle is a 1966 tow truck.

You can take a ride on a fire truck, a mail truck, or an ice-cream truck. Rides are $ 2.00, but you can get a ticket for a free ride at any grocery store in Bentwood.

Help us celebrate our grand opening by bringing your family and friends! There is something to interest everyone who attends. The Bentwood Truck Museum is a special piece of our history.

    ● To get to Bentwood Truck Museum, take Route 29 (Kingston Highway) to Palmer Street.

    ● Go south on Palmer Street for one block and take a left onto Norman Drive.

    ● You will see the museum building and the amusement park on your left

    ● Parking is available across the street, on your right.

    31. In which of the following can visitors take a ride?

    A. A milk truck. B. An ice-cream truck. C. A bakery truck. D. A school bus.

    32. Where is Bentwood Truck Museum?

    A. On Norman Drive. B. On Palmer Street. C. On Kingston Highway. D. On Route 29.

    33. What is special about this museum?

    A. It is built on the ruins of an old building.

    B. It offers visitors free rides to the museum.

    C. It exhibits trucks dating back to 200 years ago.

    D. It’s transformed from an old factory by volunteers.

I left university with a good degree in English Literature, but no sense of what I wanted to do. Over the next six years, I was treading water just trying to earn an income. I tried journalism, but I didn’t think I was any good, then finance, which I hated. Finally, I got a job as a rights assistant at a famous publisher. I loved working with books, although the job that I did was dull.

I had enough savings to take a year off work, and I decided to try to satisfy a deep-down wish to write a novel. Attending a Novel Writing MA course gave me the structure I needed to write my first 55,000 words.

It takes confidence to make a new start — there’s a dark period in-between where you’re neither one thing nor the other. You’re out for dinner and people ask what you do, and you’re too ashamed to say, “Well, I’m writing a novel, but I’m not quite sure if I’m going to get there.” My confidence dived. Believing my novel could not be published ,

    I put it aside

Then I met an agent(代理商)who said I should send my novel out to agents. So, I did and, to my surprise, got some wonderful feedback. I felt a little hope that I might actually become a published writer and, after signing with an agent, I finished the second half of the novel.

The next problem was finding a publisher. After two-and-a-half years of no income, just waiting and wondering, a publisher offered me a book deal — that publisher turned out to be the one I once worked for.

It feels like an unbelievable stroke of luck — of fate, really. When you set out to do something different, there’s no end in sight, so to find myself in a position where I now have my own name on a contract of the publisher — to be a published writer — is unbelievably rewarding.

    34. What does the underlined part in Paragraph 1 mean?

    A. I was waiting for good fortune.

    B. I was trying to find an admirable job.

    C. I was being aimless about a suitable job.

    D. I was doing several jobs for more pay at a time.

    35. The author decided to write a novel ______ .

    A. to finish the writing course

    B. to realize her own dream

    C to satisfy readers’wish

    D. to earn more money

    36. How did the writer feel halfway with the novel?

    A. Disturbed. B. Ashamed. C. Confident. D. Uncertain.

    37. What does the author mainly want to tell readers in the last paragraph?

    A. It pays to stick to one’s goal.

    B. Hard work can lead to success.

    C. She feels like being unexpectedly lucky.

    D. There is no end in sight when starting to do something.

    C

If English means endless new words, difficult grammar and sometimes strange pronunciation, you are wrong. Haven't you noticed that you have become smarter since you started to learn a language?

According to a new study by a British university, learning a second language can lead to an increase in your brain power. Researchers found that learning other languages changes grey matter. This is the area of the brain which processes information.        It is similar to the way that exercise builds muscles.

The study also found the effect is greater, the younger people learn a second language.

A team led by Dr Andrea Mechelli, from University College London, took a group of Britons who only spoke English. They were compared with a group of "early bilinguals" who had learnt a second language before the age of five, as well as a number of later learners.

Scans showed that grey matter density (密度) in the brain was greater in bilinguals than in people without a second language. But the longer a person waited before mastering a new language, the smaller the difference.

"Our findings suggest that the structure of the brain is changed by the experience of learning a second language," said the scientists.

It means that the change itself increases the ability to learn.

Professor Dylan Vaughan Jones of the University of Wales, has researched the link between bilingualism and maths skills. "Having two languages gives you two windows on the world and makes the brain more flexible (灵活的),"he said. "You are actually going        beyond language and have a better understanding of different ideas."

The findings were matched in a study of native Italian speakers who had learned English as a second language between the ages of two and 34. Reading, writing, and comprehension were all tested. The results showed that the younger they started to learn,        the better. "Studying a language means you get an entrance to another world," explained the scientists.

    38. The main subject talked about in this passage is ______.

    A. science on learning a second language

    B. man’s ability of learning a second language

    C. 1anguage can help brain power

    D. 1anguage learning and maths study

    39. In the second paragraph, the writer mentions “exercise” in order to ______.

    A. say language is also a kind of physical labor

    B. prove that one needs more practice when he (she) is learning a language

    C. to show the importance of using the language when you learn the language

    D. make people believe language learning helps grey matter work well

    40. We may know from the scientific findings that ______.

    A. the earlier you start to learn a second language, the higher the grey matter density is

    B. there is no difference between a later second language learner and one who doesn't know a second language

    C. the experience of learning a second language has bad effect on people's brain

    D. the ability of learning a second language is changing all the time

    41. The underlined word “bilinguals'’ probably means ______.

    A. a researcher on language learning

    B. a person who is good at learning foreign languages

    C. a person who can speak two languages

    D. an active language learner

    D

Why do people drink too much, eat too much, smoke cigarettes or take drugs? What’s to blame for all the bad behavior? Most people would say that, while these self-destructive acts can have many root causes, they all have one obvious thing in common: they are all examples of failures of self-control, lacking the will power to resist them.

According to a recent study, however, if you really think about it, something about that simple answer doesn’t quite make sense. In fact, it turns out that sometimes it’s having will power that really gets you into trouble.

Think back to the time you took your very first sip (啜饮) of beer. Disgusting, wasn’t it? When my father gave me my first taste of beer as a teenager, I wondered why anyone would voluntarily drink it. And smoking? No one enjoys their first cigarette — it tastes awful. So even though smoking, and drinking alcohol or coffee, can become temptation (诱惑) you need will power to resist, they never, ever start out that way.

Just getting past those first horrible experiences actually requires a lot of self-control. Ironically (讽刺的是), only those who can control themselves well, rather than give in to them, can ever come to someday develop a “taste” for Budweiser beer, Marlboro cigarettes, or dark-roasted Starbucks coffee. We do it for social acceptance. We force ourselves to consume alcohol, cigarettes, coffee and even illegal drugs, in order to seem experienced, grown-up, and cool.

These bad habits aren’t self-control failures — far from it. They are voluntary choices, and they are in fact self-control successes. Self-control is simply a tool to be put to some use, helpful or harmful. To live happy and productive lives, we need to develop not only our self-control, but also the wisdom to make good decisions about when and where to apply it.

    42. What do most people think causes bad behavior?

    A. Being forced by others.

    B. Not having enough will power.

    C. Enjoying their first experiences.

    D. Following the examples of their friends.

    43. The author mentions his experience in the third paragraph to prove ____.

    A. will power helps develop bad habits sometimes

    B. drinking beer is harmful to the health of teenagers

    C. self-control should be developed when one is young

    D. everyone can be challenged by different temptations

    44. In the last paragraph, the author stresses that ____.

    A. without self-control, no one can succeed

    B. bad habits don’t always lead to bad results

    C. applying self-control correctly is important

    D. people can develop wisdom from bad behavior

    45. What would be the best title for the passage?

    A. My First Sip of Beer B. Do You Have Will Power ?

    C. Does Will Power Benefit Us? D. Dark Side of Self-control

    第二节(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分)

    根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。

Students deal with many problems in their lives and because of all of the competing things for their attention, it's hard to concentrate on studying.___46___The key to effective studying isn't cramming(死记硬背) or studying longer, but studying smarter.

___47___Too many people look at studying as a necessary task, not an enjoyment or opportunity to learn. That's fine, but researchers have found that how you approach something matters almost as much as what you do. Sometimes you can't “force” yourself to be in the right state of mind. Aim to think positively when you study, and remind yourself of your skills and abilities. ____48____Instead of thinking, “I'm a mess. I'll never have enough time to study for this exam", look at it like, “I may be a little late to study as much as I'd like, but I'll get most of it done.”

Memory games are methods for remembering pieces of information using a simple connection of common words. Most often people get words to form a nonsense sentence that is easy to remember. Memory games are helpful because you use more of your brain to remember visual and active images than you do to remember just a list of items.___49___

A lot of people make the mistake of studying in a place that really isn't helpful to concentrating.____50____The library, a corner in a study hall, or a quiet coffee house are good places to check out. Make sure to choose the quiet areas in these places, not the loud, central gathering areas. Finding an ideal study place is important, because it's the one you can reliably count on for the next few years.

    A. Avoid terrible thinking.

    B. Avoid comparing yourself with others.

    C. A noisy place makes for a poor study area.

    D. Using more of your brain means better memory.

    E. Having a right attitude is important to study smarter.

    F. You need more effective study habits for better grades.

    G. Every person is unique in their way of effective learning.

In my opinion, love played an important role in our daily life. Life like a beautiful boat, and love is the wind. With the help of the wind, the boat can by no means go to the place what it wants to go. In my family, my parents both love me deep. It is love that makes me happy or warm. At school, all the students and teachers are friendly to me. They always motive me with inspired words, which have a significantly positive impact to me. In a short, I think love is something that we can’t describe well in any language. Love gives us a lot. So please value them.

    第二节    书面表达(满分25分)

    92. 假定你是李华,暑假在伦敦学习,得知当地美术馆要举办中国画展。请写一封信申请做志愿者,内容包括:

    1. 写信目的;

    2. 个人优势;

    3. 能做的事情。

    注意:1. 词数100左右;

    2. 可以适当增加细节,以使行文连贯;

    3. 结束语已为你写好。
