W: For one week. Groups always arrive on a Saturday evening, and leave the following Sunday morning.

    Grand Opening
    Bentwood Truck Museum
    Saturday, November 8, at 10:00 A. M.
After eighteen months of hard work by more than 100 volunteers, the Bentwood Truck Museum is ready to open. The old factory had been scheduled to be destroyed. When Roger Haygood heard about the plans to tear down the building, he bought it so that he could store his collection of old trucks there. Then he had the idea of turning the building into a truck museum.
During the past year and a half, the old building has been transformed into a treasure chest of memories. Instead of a dark and dull house, the building has become a cheery, bright home for all kinds of trucks from the past. The museum now houses 68 trucks, and we hope to have even more soon. There is a 1959 school bus, a 1942 bakery truck, and a 1937 fire engine. Our oldest vehicle is a 1919 milk truck. Our newest vehicle is a 1966 tow truck.
You can take a ride on a fire truck, a mail truck, or an ice-cream truck. Rides are $ 2.00, but you can get a ticket for a free ride at any grocery store in Bentwood.
Help us celebrate our grand opening by bringing your family and friends! There is something to interest everyone who attends The Bentwood Truck Museum is a special piece of our history.

I left university with a good degree in English Literature, but no sense of what I wanted to do. Over the next six years, I was treading water just trying to earn an income. I tried journalism, but I didn’t think I was any good, then finance, which I hated. Finally, I got a job as a rights assistant at a famous publisher. I loved working with books, although the job that I did was dull.
I had enough savings to take a year off work, and I decided to try to satisfy a deep-down wish to write a novel. Attending a Novel Writing MA course gave me the structure I needed to write my first 55,000 words.
It takes confidence to make a new start — there’s a dark period in-between where you’re neither one thing nor the other. You’re out for dinner and people ask what you do, and you’re too ashamed to say, “Well, I’m writing a novel, but I’m not quite sure if I’m going to get there.” My confidence dived. Believing my novel could not be published ,
    I put it aside.
Then I met an agent(代理商)who said I should send my novel out to agents. So, I did and, to my surprise, got some wonderful feedback. I felt a little hope that I might actually become a published writer and, after signing with an agent, I finished the second half of the novel.
The next problem was finding a publisher. After two-and-a-half years of no income, just waiting and wondering, a publisher offered me a book deal — that publisher turned out to be the one I once worked for.
It feels like an unbelievable stroke of luck — of fate, really. When you set out to do something different, there’s no end in sight, so to find myself in a position where I now have my own name on a contract of the publisher — to be a published writer — is unbelievably rewarding.
    34. What does the underlined part in Paragraph 1 mean?
    A. I was waiting for good fortune.
    B. I was trying to find an admirable job.
    C. I was being aimless about a suitable job.
    D. I was doing several jobs for more pay at a time.
    35. The author decided to write a novel ______ .
    A. to finish the writing course
    B. to realize her own dream
    C. to satisfy readers’wish
    D. to earn more money
    36. How did the writer feel halfway with the novel?
    A. Disturbed. B. Ashamed. C. Confident. D. Uncertain.
    37. What does the author mainly want to tell readers in the last paragraph?
    A. It pays to stick to one’s goal.
    B. Hard work can lead to success.
    C. She feels like being unexpectedly lucky.
    D. There is no end in sight when starting to do something.
C 35. B 36. D 37. A
根据第一段but no sense of what I wanted to do. I tried journalism, but I didn’t think I was any good, then finance, which I hated,可知,但不知道我想做什么。
I decided to try to satisfy a deep-down wish to write a novel"可知作者决定写小说的目的只是满足自己内心深处的愿望,实现自己的梦想说明写作是他一直以来的梦想,故选B项。
My confidence dived. Believing my novel could not be published, I put it aside可知,我的信心下降了。
When you set out to do something different, there’s no end in sight, so to find myself in a position where I now have my own name on a contract(合同)of the publisher—to be a published writer—is unbelievably rewarding(有回报的)可知,当你开始做一些不同的事情时,是看不到尽头的,以至于陷于困境,但是作者摆脱了困境,成为了一名出版作家,这是令人难以置信的回报。 故选A项。
    C
If English means endless new words, difficult grammar and sometimes strange pronunciation, you are wrong. Haven't you noticed that you have become smarter since you started to learn a language?
According to a new study by a British university, learning a second language can lead to an increase in your brain power. Researchers found that learning other languages changes grey matter. This is the area of the brain which processes information. It is similar to the way that exercise builds muscles.
The study also found the effect is greater, the younger people learn a second language.
A team led by Dr Andrea Mechelli, from University College London, took a group of Britons who only spoke English. They were compared with a group of "early bilinguals" who had learnt a second language before the age of five, as well as a number of later learners.
Scans showed that grey matter density (密度) in the brain was greater in bilinguals than in people without a second language. But the longer a person waited before mastering a new language, the smaller the difference.
"Our findings suggest that the structure of the brain is changed by the experience of learning a second language," said the scientists.
It means that the change itself increases the ability to learn.
Professor Dylan Vaughan Jones of the University of Wales, has researched the link between bilingualism and maths skills. "Having two languages gives you two windows on the world and makes the brain more flexible (灵活的),"he said. "You are actually going beyond language and have a better understanding of different ideas."
The findings were matched in a study of native Italian speakers who had learned English as a second language between the ages of two and 34. Reading, writing, and comprehension were all tested. The results showed that the younger they started to learn, the better. "Studying a language means you get an entrance to another world," explained the scientists.
    38. The main subject talked about in this passage is ______.

通读全文,特别是根据第二段“According to a new study by a British university, learning a second language can lead to an increase in your brain power.
根据第二段“Researchers found that learning other languages changes grey matter. This is the area of the brain which processes information. It is similar to the way that exercise builds muscles.”
根据第五段“Scans showed that grey matter density (密度) in the brain was greater in bilinguals than in people without a second language. But the longer a person waited before mastering a new language, the smaller the difference.”

Why do people drink too much, eat too much, smoke cigarettes or take drugs? What’s to blame for all the bad behavior? Most people would say that, while these self-destructive acts can have many root causes, they all have one obvious thing in common: they are all examples of failures of self-control, lacking the will power to resist them.
According to a recent study, however, if you really think about it, something about that simple answer doesn’t quite make sense. In fact, it turns out that sometimes it’s having will power that really gets you into trouble.
Think back to the time you took your very first sip (啜饮) of beer. Disgusting, wasn’t it? When my father gave me my first taste of beer as a teenager, I wondered why anyone would voluntarily drink it. And smoking? No one enjoys their first cigarette — it tastes awful. So even though smoking, and drinking alcohol or coffee, can become temptation (诱惑) you need will power to resist, they never, ever start out that way.
Just getting past those first horrible experiences actually requires a lot of self-control. Ironically (讽刺的是), only those who can control themselves well, rather than give in to them, can ever come to someday develop a “taste” for Budweiser beer, Marlboro cigarettes, or dark-roasted Starbucks coffee. We do it for social acceptance. We force ourselves to consume alcohol, cigarettes, coffee and even illegal drugs, in order to seem experienced, grown-up, and cool.
These bad habits aren’t self-control failures — far from it. They are voluntary choices, and they are in fact self-control successes. Self-control is simply a tool to be put to some use, helpful or harmful. To live happy and productive lives, we need to develop not only our self-control, but also the wisdom to make good decisions about when and where to apply it.
    42. What do most people think causes bad behavior?
    A. Being forced by others.
    B. Not having enough will power.
    C. Enjoying their first experiences.
    D. Following the examples of their friends.
    43. The author mentions his experience in the third paragraph to prove ____.
    A. will power helps develop bad habits sometimes
    B. drinking beer is harmful to the health of teenagers
    C. self-control should be developed when one is young
    D. everyone can be challenged by different temptations
    44. In the last paragraph, the author stresses that ____.
    A. without self-control, no one can succeed
    B. bad habits don’t always lead to bad results
    C. applying self-control correctly is important
    D. people can develop wisdom from bad behavior
    45. What would be the best title for the passage?
    A. My First Sip of Beer B. Do You Have Will Power ?
    C. Does Will Power Benefit Us? D. Dark Side of Self-control
B 43. A 44. C 45. D
根据文章第一段最后一句“they are all examples of failures of self-control, lacking the will power to resist them.”
在第三段中“When my father gave me my first taste of beer as a teenager, I wondered why anyone would voluntarily drink it. And smoking? No one enjoys their first cigarette — it tastes awful. So even though smoking, and drinking alcohol or coffee, can become temptation (诱惑) you need will power to resist, they never, ever start out that way.”
根据文章最后三行“Self-control is simply a tool to be put to some use, helpful or harmful. To live happy and productive lives, we need to develop not only our self-control, but also the wisdom to make good decisions about when and where to apply it.”

Aim to think positively when you study, and remind yourself of your skills and abilities. ____48____Instead of thinking, “I'm a mess. I'll never have enough time to study for this exam", look at it like, “I may be a little late to study as much as I'd like, but I'll get most of it done.”
Memory games are methods for remembering pieces of information using a simple connection of common words. Most often people get words to form a nonsense sentence that is easy to remember. Memory games are helpful because you use more of your brain to remember visual and active images than you do to remember just a list of items.___49___
A lot of people make the mistake of studying in a place that really isn't helpful to concentrating.____50____The library, a corner in a study hall, or a quiet coffee house are good places to check out. It was ___82___ (surprise) that my mom never carried out a policy ____83____(real). She kind of let it up to us. Once in a while, she would put her foot down and make us take turns. I recall that at times, the front seat would go to whoever ___84___ (cry) “I call the front!” first. But it had to be ____85____ we were outside of the store or the house. We couldn’t “call it” while we were still inside.
Sometimes we would determine who got to sit in the front by whoever touched the car first. I certainly lost because my brother was stronger, and therefore ____86____ (quick). So, he would touch the car first.
And ___87___ other way we would decide who got the front was by arguing ____88____ whose turn it was. Of course, we always thought it was our own turn. So, we’d go for it ____89____ one of us gave in, or my mum got annoyed enough ____90____(make) one of us sit in the back.
For my brother and me, fighting over the front seat was an important part of our bonding.

故填after或when或while。
故填 the。
故填over或about。
故填to make。

In my opinion, love played an important role in our daily life. Life like a beautiful boat, and love is the wind. With the help of the wind, the boat can by no means go to the place what it wants to go. In my family, my parents both love me deep. It is love that makes me happy or warm. At school, all the students and teachers are friendly to me. They always motive me with inspired words, which have a significantly positive impact to me. In a short, I think love is something that we can’t describe well in any language. Love gives us a lot. So please value them.
1. played→plays
    2. life 后加上is
    3. With →Without
    4. what →where
    5. deep →deeply
    6. or →and
    7. inspired →inspiring
    8 to → on
    9. a 去掉
    10. them→it
文中表示“没有……”,用介词without,所以With 改成Without。
have an impact on对于……
    第九处:考查固定短语。句意:总之,我认为爱是一种我们无法用任何语言描述的东西。in short总之,该短语是固定短语,所以去掉a。
    第十处:考查代词。句意:爱给了我们很多,所以请珍惜它。指代上文的love,用单数意义的人称代词,所以them改成it。
    第二节 书面表达(满分25分)
    92. 假定你是李华,暑假在伦敦学习,得知当地美术馆要举办中国画展。请写一封信申请做志愿者,内容包括:

    2. 个人优势;
    3. 能做的事情。
    注意:1. 词数100左右;
    2. 可以适当增加细节,以使行文连贯;
    3. 结束语已为你写好。

Besides, my fluent spoken English and rich knowledge about Chinese paintings will help visitors understand the meaning behind each painting deeply. I will appreciate it if I could be given the opportunity.
Looking forward to your early reply.
    Yours,
    Li Hua

    本篇书面表达属于应用文。
    【详解】1.审题立意;
    本篇书面表达属于应用文。要求考生写申请信,人称使用第一人称和第二人称,时态用一般现在时。
    2.谋篇布局;
    书信格式,称呼和落款文中已经给出。首段,写信的目的,中间段写个人优势和能做的事,最后一段总结。
    3.关键词。
根据写作要点及构思好的提纲我们可以初步确定文章可能使用到的词汇有:the local art gallery (当地美术馆);a Chinese Painting Exhibition(中国画展),a good command of(熟练掌握),beneficial for(有益于),familiarity with(熟悉),appreciate(感激),take my application into consideration(考虑我的申请)。 First of all, Besides, to begin with, moreover,as for me,Last but not least,等,使全文衔接自然,语义流畅。
As a student who has learned Chinese painting since 5 years old, I am very pleased to have an opportunity to introduce Chinese paintings to foreigners. I will appreciate it if I could be given the opportunity.
