If you have an iPod or a phone that plays music, the Sony Walkman may look like ancient history. But when it came out fortyone years ago, it completely changed how people listened to music.

__1__ Small portable(便携的) radios didn’t sound good and usually came with just a small earphone that went in one ear. There were boom boxes—large music players which sounded good and could be turned up loud. But they were huge and heavy. Almost any way someone could listen to music meant that everyone around them would have to listen to their music, too.

On July 1,1979, Sony introduced a product called the “Walkman”. The “walk” part of the name was important. __2__ These days, we are very used to that idea, but in 1979, it was pretty special. Another thing that was special was how good it sounded. Compared to the headphones we have now, the quality wasn’t great. But back then, the sound amazed people. __3__

Many people thought it wouldn’t sell very well because it couldn’t record music. However, the Walkman was hugely popular. __4__ But whoever made the device, most people kept using the name “Walkman”.

On a phone or other music players today, you might have hundreds or thousands of songs. But the selection on the Walkman was much more limited. __5__ If you wanted to go to a certain song, you would need to wind or rewind through the rest of the tape to get to the song you wanted to hear.

The cassette Walkman was a big success. It started the trend of “personal” music that led to the iPod, the iPhone, and the other musicplaying devices we use today.

    A. The Walkman then could only play cassette tapes.

    B. Soon other companies were imitating Sony’s device.

    C. It almost felt like the music was playing inside your head.

    D. The tape needed to be taken out and turned over to play the other side.

    E. It meant that you could listen to your own music as you walked around.

    F. The first Walkman actually allowed you to share your music with a friend.

    G. Before the Walkman came outthere wasn’t a good portable way to listen to music.

G  2. E  3. C  4. B  5. A

The ‘walk’ part of the name was important可知,空处应是对这一内容的进一步阐释,故E这意味着你可以在四处走动时听你自己的音乐符合语境。

On a phone or other music players today...much more limited可知,现在,在手机或者其他音乐播放器上你可能有数百首或数千首歌曲可选择,但随身听上的选择要有限得多。

Some young people look for work if they need to earn money for accommodation and food. GMost students for a gap year take on a part-time job to save up for the trip.

She says: “During my gap year, I spent four months in Kenya teaching English, art and physical education to children aged 8-18. FThen I travelled the country and even climbed Mount Kenya.

I worked beforehand to pay for the trip, showing I had good self-motivation and organizational skills, and I was able to get by on very little money. Employers see that climbing to an altitude of 4,985m shows strength and determination. CNot everyone can put that on their resumes

Handwriting is quickly becoming a dying art. Few businesses can run nowadays without computers. __16__ Researchers from Princeton University conducted a study to demonstrate the differences between students who wrote out their notes and those who typed notes on a lecture. __17__ Participants were tested on the material 30 minutes after the lecture and again a week later. And handwriting emerged as the champion.

__18__ The typers had a significant edge when it came to notetaking efficiency. The typers could copy down significantly many more words than the writers, sometimes even transcribing the content of the lecture word for word.

But while more of the lecture’s content was retained (保留) on paper when typing, it wasn’t necessarily retained in participants’ heads. __19__ On the test 30 minutes after the lecture, typers and writers did more or less equally well on questions about the basic facts of the lecture, but typers fell behind when it came to more conceptual questions.

As for the later quiz, the results were similar. Students with handwritten notes were able to remember and still understand the concepts of the lecture after a week had passed. These participants were also more open to understanding new ideas. __20__

    A. The tests that the participants took proved this.

    B. The efficiency of handwriting might best benefit you.

    C. That’s not to say that typing doesn’t have its benefits.

    D. In this studythe laptops were only used to take notes.

    E. Generally speakingtyping also has its own disadvantages.

    F. But what are we losing as handwriting loses its significance in society?

    G. Clearlywriting by hand is one of the things that can make you smarter.

F  17. D  18. C  19. A  20. G

Handwriting is quickly becoming a dying art与该选项中losingloses相呼应。

Learning to Give a Pep Talk (打气)

Everyone wants to be the type of person who gives the critical talk that turns around a friend’s outlook. However, giving a good pep talk isn’t easy. __21__. You need to not only listen and understand, but also stress the other person’s strengths. You also need to know when to stop talking.

“A lot of people think they are giving a pep talk, but they are just saying what they would want to hear,” says Stacy Kaiser, a psychotherapist (心理治疗师) in Los Angeles.

Instead of instantly telling someone what to do, ask him what action he has thought about taking and why he thinks it will be beneficial. “Don’t jump right in and insist ‘You’ll be fine,’” says Kaiser. __22__. Repeat the concerns for the person out loud, so he feels heard. Then, show your friend that you believe in him and that he has what it takes to get through this hard time. Stress his strengths.

__23__. You can’t guarantee success, but you can remind the person that he has been through a tough time before and has gotten through it.

At last, Kaiser says you must know when to stop. “__24__. Don’t argue if the person disagrees with what you are saying. Instead, tell him ‘I am sorry you are having such a hard time.’ And then back down.”

Kaiser says he has learned to give good pep talks by giving bad ones. He lost a number of loved ones during a short period. “Timing is everything.” There is a time to give a pep talk, and there is a time to just listen. __25__.

    A. Let your friend have his moment

    B. Give your pep talk and then shut up

    C. Arguing with your friend makes no sense

    D. Show your friend that you understand why he is sad

    E. He isn’t interested in what his best friends really need

    F. It requires an understanding of what your audience needs

    G. It is also important to remember that pep talks are about hope

F  22. D  23. G  24. B  25. A

Repeat the concerns for the person out loud, so he feels heard可知,你要大声说出对这个人的关心;据此可以推知,空处表示要向朋友表现出你理解他为什么会伤心。

You can’t guarantee success...has gotten through it可以推知,该段主要陈述要鼓励朋友看到希望。

    25. 根据上句中的and there is a time to just listen可知,在给朋友打气时要学会倾听,将时间交给朋友。

You probably think of food poisoning as something that you might pick up at a greasy spoon or an outdoor barbecue stand. __26__ The way you handle food in your own kitchen—which, unlike a restaurant, doesn’t have to conform to health regulations—can just as easily make you sick. Here are some most overlooked food safety guidelines.

    Wash your hands properly.

This might seem like the most obvious food safety practice. However, most people don’t bother to do it. And the minority that does wash doesn’t do it properly—which might be even more dangerous, because they think they’re protecting themselves and their families, when they aren’t. __27__

    __28__

Chances are you’ve probably taken a bite of something in the fridge that’s just a bit past the expiration date, in an effort to see if it’s safe to eat the rest of it. If it’s gone dangerously bad, it should taste extremely unpleasant, right? __29__ According to the United States Department of Agriculture, there is one type of bacteria which typically doesn’t alter the taste, smell or appearance of food.

Wash fruit and veggies, even if you’re going to peel (削皮) them.

__30__ The problem is that when you cut away the unwashed skin and then use the same knife to cut up what’s underneath that, you actually may be spreading bacteria from the outside to the previously pristine inside. In fact, you can contaminate(弄脏) the veggies further if your salad bowl or sink is not clean.

    A. Not necessarily.

    B. Better safe than sorry.

    C. Don’t taste food to see if it’s good.

    D. However you wash your handsat least wash them.

    E. Why wash them when you are not going to eat the skin?

    F. But those aren’t the only places you might get food poisoning.

    G. You are supposed to wet your hands with running waterapply soap and wash for at least 20 seconds.

F  27. G  28. C  29. A  30. E
