    Two things changed my life: my mother and a white plastic bike basket. I have thought long and hard about it and its true. I would be a different person if my mom hadnt turned a silly bicycle basket into a life lesson I carry with me today.

    Managing the family budget(预算)must have been a very hard task, but my mother made it look easy. If we complained about not having what another kid did, wed hear something like, I dont care what so-and-so got for his birthday; you are not getting a TV in your room, a car for your birthday or an expensive birthday party. We had to earn our pocket money by doing the housework. I can still remember how long it took to shine(擦亮)the legs of our coffee table. My brothers can no doubt remember hours spent cleaning the house. We made our own beds (no one left the house until that was done). We had to keep track of our belongings(物品), and if something was lost, it was not replaced.

    It was summer and, one day, my mother drove me to the bike shop to get a tire fixed—and there it was in the window. White, shiny, plastic and decorated(装饰)with flowers, the basket winked(眨眼)at me and I knew—I knew—I had to have it.

    It's beautiful, my mother said when I pointed it out to her. What a nice basket.

    I played it cool for a short while. But then I guess I couldn't stand it any longer: Mom, please can I please, please get it? I’ll do extra chores for as long as you say. Ill do anything, but I need that basket. I love that basket. Please, Mom. Please?

    You know, she said, gently rubbing my back while we both stared at(注视)what I believed was the coolest thing ever, If you save up you could buy this yourself.

    By the time I make enough it'll be gone!

    Maybe Roger here could hold it for you, she smiled at Roger, the bike store Owner.

    He cant hold it for that long, Mom. Someone else will buy it. Please, Mom, please?

Having counted the money, Peter put it carefully on the counter, asking again, 6Sir, is it enough for my little sister's doll?

    The amusing scene just in front of the shopkeeper eventually brought a smile on his face. Shaking his head slightly, he replied, My boy, I am afraid it seems not to be enough.

    Laurie couldnt keep from smiling. She pointed to Jinny’s skating bag. “Some stuff fell out of your bag.” Laurie said.

    Jinny looked at the clothing and equipment that lay scattered on the floor. As she began to gather her belongings, the door opened.

    “Jinny,” called someone, “You’d better give the tape of your music to the sound engineer right away.”

    “I thought I gave him my music tape half an hour ago,” said Jinny. “Tell him it’s the green box with my initials written in white in the right-hand corner.”

    “He claims you never gave it to him, and he is getting angry.”

    “Then I don't know what I did with it,” said Jinny, hurrying out.

    Laurie knew that music was nearly as important to the program as skating itself. If she lost her music tape, she might as well forget about skating. Laurie stood up and walked to the chair to do a few more knee bends.

That was my view. Elizabeth argued that it absolutely was a meet because there would be races. I told Elizabeth I really wanted her to go. She fought back angrily but finally agreed.

    When the day of the special swim night arrived Elizabeth was nervous. She was the youngest person and shorter by at least a foot than most of the other kids. She panicked when it was time for the T-shirt relay. The relay works like this: One person from each relay team puts on a T-shirt, a pair of socks and a swim cap; swims 50 meters; and gets out of the pool. She takes off the clothes and puts them on the next person, who then swims 50 meters. This continues until everyone on the team has completed a lap.

    Then it was Elizabeth's turn to swim. She seemed to swim faster in the T-shirt and socks than she did when she wasn't wearing them. Approaching the halfway mark, Elizabeth was in the lead. Suddenly, somebody noticed that one of Elizabeths socks had fallen off and was floating(漂)in the pool. She has to get that sock on before the end of the race, a swimming official told Elizabeths team, or you will be disqualified.
