The driver cuts you off in traffic. The neighbors don’t pick up after their dog. The insurance company keeps you, waiting endlessly. Situations such as these get our hearts racing. Anger isn’t a pleasant feeling. Some of us control the emotion, while others explode in a wild rage. Both habits affect our bodies, our minds, and our relationships.
Anger may feel uncomfortable, but it’s also normal and healthy. “A lot of people think they have to get rid of their anger,” says Patrick, a psychologist in Calgary. “But anger is an emotion built into us to signal that something needs to be solved.” When we take notice of that signal and actually realize the problem instead of ignoring it, we’re usually much better for it.
Unfortunately, many of us have been conditioned to hide our emotions. Research suggests that this can have long-term effects on our health. Investigators show that people who suppress their emotions tend to have shorter life spans. They’re more likely to die earlier from cancer, for example. When we are angry, stress hormones (荷尔蒙) are released, which can make us develop a wide range of diseases, including diabetes and depression. Is it better, then, to scream whenever something makes you mad? That’s the theory behind the “rage rooms” that have appeared in many American cities, where folks are invited to express their anger by violently hitting stuff in a “safe” environment. “But the research indicates that when we display our anger aggressively, it can actually increase the intensity of the anger—and increase the likelihood of aggressive actions in the future.” says Keelan. It doesn’t take much imagination to predict how anger can affect your relationships with your wives or husbands, your kids, or your coworkers. It also hurts your health.
    24. What situation may make people angry?
    A. Neighbors pick up their dogs’ waste.
    B. The insurance company timely offers service.
    C. A driver doesn’t wait for his turn.
    D. A stranger helps when people get lost.
    25. What can we learn from the passage?
    A. People should try their best to control their emotion.
    B. Anger does good to our health sometimes.
    C. Angry people never release stress hormones.
    D. Anger is an emotion signaling something has been solved.
    26. What does the unlined word “suppress” in Para.3 mean?
    A. affect B. develop C. control D. display
    27. How does the writer express his viewpoint?
    A. Subjectively. B. Pessimistically. C. Indifferently. D. Objectively.

Children always appreciate small gifts of money. Mum or dad, of course, provides a regular supply of pocket money, but uncles and aunts are always a source of extra income. With some children, small sums go a long way. If fifty pence pieces are not exchanged for sweets, they rattle for months inside the money-box. Only very thrifty children manage to fill up a money-box. For most of them, fifty pence is a small price to pay for a nice big bar of chocolate.
My nephew, George, has a money-box but it is always empty. Very few of the fifty pence pieces and pound coins I have given to him found their way there. I gave him fifty pence yesterday and advised him to save it. Instead, he bought himself fifty pence worth of trouble. On his way to the sweet shop, he dropped his fifty pence and it rolled along the pavement and then disappeared down a drain. George took off his jacket, rolled up his sleeves and pushed his right arm through the drain cover. However, he couldn’t find his fifty pence piece anywhere, and what’s more, he couldn’t get his arm out. A crowd of people gathered round him and a lady rubbed his arm with soap and butter, but George was firmly stuck. The fire-brigade was called and two fire fighters freed George using a special type of grease. George was not too upset by his experience because a gentleman who owns the sweet shop heard about his trouble and rewarded him with a large box of chocolates.
    28. Where do kids mainly get their pocket money ? ______.
    A. mums or dads B. aunts or uncles
    C. money-boxes D. grandmas or grandpas
    29. According to Paragraph 1, how do most kids treat their pocket money?
    A. They save it in the money-box. B. They spend it on things they like.
    C. They exchange it for more money. D. They rattle it inside the money-box.
    30. Which of the following statements about George is TRUE?
    A. He bought a large box of candy.
    B. He felt sorry for his bad experience.
    C. He eventually got his money back from the drain.
    D. He hardly saved the pocket money given by the author.
    31. After the fire fighters came to George’s rescue, what happened to George?______.
    A. George greased his arm and was able to get it out of the drain.
    B. George got some chocolates at the sweet shop with the fire fighters.
    C. George was rewarded by the owner of the sweet shop for his trouble.
    D. the lady who had failed to rescue George gave him a box of chocolates.
    D
We’ve had waves of panic around technology for decades, whether it is comic books or video games. Now it happens to be social media. And the fact of the matter is that parents and teachers, who are trying to raise their kids in the face of these panics, are being poorly served by the government when it comes to getting meaningful advice.
It’s not that social media is good or bad for people. It’s that the science of social media and mental health is broken. We need to do research, but we shouldn’t be approaching it from the perspective that the world is ending. We need to be curious and open to the possibility of its effects, positive and negative.
The danger for policymakers or parents is that if you pretend that social media is a problem, without having evidence, and you take steps to regulate it, the intervention could end up being really bad for young people. You might be taking away a lifeline for vulnerable (脆弱的) kids or free them of their human right to play, which is morally wrong at the best of times, let alone during a pandemic.
So that’s why I’m not going to tell you that I know social media is bad. It’s perfectly reasonable for parents and teachers to be concerned about social media, but it’s unavoidable and young people are going to encounter it sooner or later. So what would you rather do: keep them in the dark and leave them ill-equipped to deal with it or let them learn about social media with your help and support? It’s a little like learning to ride a bike. Bikes can be huge fun to ride, but you can also hurt yourself on them, which is why you don’t just give your kid a bike and a helmet and wish them good luck. You help them learn to ride. Similarly, you’re not asking your 14-year-old daughter to choose between telling you someone scary is messaging her or losing her phone. You need to treat it like anything else that can hurt you, but can also connect you.
    32. What does this wave of panic refer to now according to the passage?
    A. Technology. B. Comic books.
    C. Video games. D. Social media.
    33. What should we do to help our children?
    A. Give them some instructions.
    B. Ask the experts for help.
    C. Go to the special treatment center.
    D. Free them of their human right to play.
    34. What is the author’s attitude towards the social media?
    A. Doubtful. B. Supportive.
    C. Neutral. D. Indifferent.
    35. Which of the following statements does the author agree with?
    A. Parents should let children learn about social media on their own.
    B. The world is ending as a result of the negative effects of social media.
    C. Parents should be cautious when regulating children’s using social media.
    D. Parents are advised not to give kids helmets when they learn to ride a bike.

September 23 marks the start of a new season. ___36___ In Great Britain, the third season of the year usually has only one name: autumn. But if you travel across the Atlantic, you’ll find that people use both fall and autumn interchangeably when referring to this time of year, making it the only season in the English language with two widely accepted names. ___37___
According to Dictionary.com, fall isn’t a modern name that followed the more traditional autumn. The two terms are actually first recorded within a few hundred years of each other, with the term fall being used even a bit earlier.
___38___ The word is of Germanic origin and meant “picking” or “collecting”, a nod to the act of gathering and preserving crops in the field before winter. In the 1500s, English speakers began referring to the season separating the hot and cold months as either the fall of the leaf or the spring of the leaf, or fall and spring for short. ___39___ By the end of the 1600s, autumn, from the French word “automne” and the Latin “autumnus”, had overtaken fall as the standard British term for the third season.
Around the same time England adopted autumn, the first-ever British American colonists(殖民者)were voyaging to North America. ___40___ While the former fell out of fashion overseas, it established itself in the local vocabulary by the time America won its independence. Today, using both words to describe the season before winter is still a unique American behavior.
    A. The Americans prefer using fall to using autumn.
    B. With them they brought the words fall and autumn.
    C. So what is it about the season that makes it so special?
    D. But for some reason, only spring had staying power in Britain.
    E. It is time to gather apples, rice and other things for the farmers.
    F. However, what exactly you should call that season depends on where you are.
    G. Before either word appeared, the season between summer and winter was known as harvest.

Many years ago, I had a friend named Jonathan who lived only a few houses down the street. He was a cool kid and a real friend and in retrospect(回想) I can see he had all the usual qualities and hang-ups of a typical boy. He was fun to be with because of his innocent enthusiasm, and he knew all the best places to hang out in the neighborhood.
The best part about Jonathan, though, was his dog. This is not to say that my friend was any less memorable than his pet, but that dog had a very special quality. A friendly Labrador that never met anyone he didn’t like, or immediately want to lick, Bowzer was born without any vocal chords (声带). He simply couldn’t bark though he behaved just like any other dog.
Even though he couldn’t make any sounds, Bowzer surely made his presence known anyway. We couldn’t play a pickup baseball game in the neighborhood park without an extra infielder, outfielder, base runner, or bellboy running around on four paws. It looked like his life depended on bumping into every single player on the field, regardless of which team that player played on. For all of us, it became an accepted part of our playtime that Bowzer would somehow be involved in whatever activity we decided on.
Then, one day, something terrible happened to Jonathan. His parents were called away to the hospital because his grandmother was ill, and so Jonathan was left at home by himself. Two men had chosen that house for an unannounced visit.
Jonathan was in his bedroom and heard the noise from the break-in, and because of panic, he didn’t scream for help. Bowzer was in the bedroom, and heard the noise as well, but because of his birth defect(缺陷), he couldn’t make a sound. As Jonathan read a book, the robbers made their way through the entire house and probably figured that no one was home.
    注意:
    1. 续写词数应为150左右;
    2. 请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。

    Para. 1:
One of the robbers opened the door to Jonathan’s bedroom, and was frightened to find a boy in the bed.____

    Para. 2:
Luckily, Jonathan survived that horrific gunshot without any physical injuries, and he loved his dog more afterwards.__________________________________________________

Situations such as these get our hearts racing.“司机挡住了你的去路。邻居们不收拾他们的狗。保险公司让你等个不停。这样的情况让我们心跳加速。”由此判断出,C项A driver doesn’t wait for his turn.(司机不会等着轮到自己。)
Anger may feel uncomfortable, but it’s also normal and healthy.“愤怒可能会让人感觉不舒服,但这也是正常和健康的。”
Unfortunately, many of us have been conditioned to hide our emotions. Research suggests that this can have long-term effects on our health.“不幸的是,我们很多人都习惯于隐藏自己的情绪。研究表明,这可能会对我们的健康产生长期影响。”由此可知,Investigators show that people who suppress their emotions tend to have shorter life spans.“研究人员表明,压抑情绪的人往往寿命较短。”
Anger may feel uncomfortable, but it’s also normal and healthy.“愤怒可能会让人感觉不舒服,但这也是正常和健康的。” Unfortunately, many of us have been conditioned to hide our emotions.“不幸的是,我们很多人都习惯于隐藏自己的情绪。”
根据第一段中“Mum or dad, of course, provides a regular supply of pocket money, but uncles and aunts are always a source of extra income.” 故选A。
根据第一段中“With some children, small sums go a long way. If fifty pence pieces are not exchanged for sweets, they rattle for months inside the money-box. Only very thrifty children manage to fill up a money-box. For most of them, fifty pence is a small price to pay for a nice big bar of chocolate.”
根据第二段中“My nephew, George, has a money-box but it is always empty. Very few of the fifty pence pieces and pound coins I have given to him found their way there.”
根据第二段中“The fire-brigade was called and two fire fighters freed George using a special type of grease. George was not too upset by his experience because a gentleman who owns the sweet shop heard about his trouble and rewarded him with a large box of chocolates.”
We’ve had waves of panic around technology for decades, whether it is comic books or video games. Now it happens to be social media.
根据最后一段第三句“So what would you rather do: kept them in the dark and leave them ill-equipped to deal with it or let them learn about social media with your help and support? It’s a little like learning to ride a bike. (所以,你更愿意做什么呢?把他们蒙在黑暗中,让他们无法应对,还是让他们在你的帮助和支持下了解社交媒体?这有点像学骑自行车。)”可知,面对杜交媒体,我们应该给予孩子们支持,就像孩子们学习骑自行车一样。因此,给予孩子们指导符合文意,故选A项。
    34. 推理判断题。根据第二段第一句“It’s not that social media is good or bad for people. It’s that the science of social media and mental health is broken. (这并不是说杜交媒体对人们是好是坏。而是社交媒体和心理健康的科学被打破了。)”可知,社交媒体本身无所谓好坏。再者,根据第二段最后一句“We need to be curious and open to the possibility of its effects positive and negative. (我们需要对其可能产生的积极和消极影响保持好奇和开放的心态。)”可知,作者认为社交媒体所产生的影响既有积极的一面也有消极的一面,因此,作者对于社交媒体的态度是中立的,故选C项。
    35. 推理判断题。根据最后一段第三句“So what would you rather do: keep them in the dark and leave them ill-quipped to deal with it or let them learned about social media with your help and support? (所以,你更愿意做什么呢?把他们蒙在黑暗中,让他们无法应对,还是让他们在你的帮助和支持下了解社交媒体?)”可知,作者通过反义疑问句的形式说明,家长不能让孩子们独自应对社交媒体带来的影响,因此A选项与原文意思相反,故排除。同时,根据最后一段第四句“...which is why you don't just give your kid a bike and a helmet and wish them good luck. (这就是为什么你不能给你的孩子一辆自行车和一个头盔并祝他们好运呢?)”可知,作者通过举例论证和反义疑问句的形式表明,家长应该给予孩子帮助,因此排除选项D。根据第二段的第三、四句“We need to do research, but we shouldn’t be approaching it from the perspective that the world is ending. We need to be curious and open to the possibility of its effects, positive and negative. (我们需要做研究,但我们不应该从世界末日的角度来看待它。我们需要对其可能产生的积极和消极影响保持好奇和开放的心态。)”可知,作者不赞同世界末日归因于社交网络,因此排除选项B。根据第三段第一句“the danger for policymakers or parents is that if you pretend that social media is a problem, without having evidence, and you take steps to regulate it, the intervention (妨碍) could end up being really bad for young people.

    36. 根据空前“September 23 marks the start of a new season”可知,文章即将论述这一季节,空后说到了“In Great Britain, the third season of the year”和“if you travel across the Atlantic, you’ll find that people use both fall and autumn”那么只有F项(到底用fall还是autumn取决于你在什么地方),故选D项。
    38. 根据空后对该词的解释“meant “picking” or “collecting”, a nod to the act of gathering and preserving crops in the field before winter(意思是采摘和收集,在冬天来之前在田地采摘和保存粮食的行为)”可以知道这就是harvest(收获),故选G项。
    39. 根据In the 1500s,英国人指代秋季要么用fall,要么用spring,而直到1600s秋天autumn才超过fall流行起来指代秋季“By the end of the 1600s, autumn, from the French word “automne” and the Latin “autumnus”, had overtaken fall as the standard British term for the third season.”,故空格处故选A项。
    40. 根据前一句“the first-ever British American colonists(殖民者)were voyaging to North America.(第一批殖民者航海来到美洲)”,与B项“他们带来了fall和autumn这两个单词”呼应,故选B项。

One of the robbers opened the door to Jonathan’s bedroom, and was frightened to find a boy in the bed. The robber was even more frightened to discover a fifty-pound Labrador flying at him. Bowzer couldn’t bark, but that didn’t mean he did not have teeth or that he did not intend to take as big a bite out of that robber as he could. With an angry dog chewing on his arm, the robber began shouting in pain. The second robber suddenly appeared, and that’s when Jonathan saw the gun. The last thing he remembers is hearing one gunshot.
Luckily, Jonathan survived that horrific gunshot without any physical injuries, and he loved his dog more afterwards. Bowzer protected his master in his own way. Just like on the baseball field, he responded swiftly and successfully bit the arm that held the gun. That gunshot, originally aiming at Jonathan, unfortunately went through one leg of Bowzer, causing him unable to run. Luckily, the police arrived just in time to arrest the robbers. Life came back to normal. Jonathan still hang out with his friends a lot, but he never leaves Bowzer at home alone. He takes him wherever he goes.
    ①咬住胳膊:chew on one’s arm/bite on one’s arm
    ②痛苦大叫:shout in pain/scream painfully
    ③反应迅速:respond swiftly/responsive
    ④射穿:go through/shot through
    ⑤逮捕:arrest/take into custody
    ①害怕的:frightened/fearful
    ②不幸的是:unfortunately/unluckily
    ③幸运的是:fortunately/luckily
[高分句型1] The second robber suddenly appeared, and that’s when Jonathan saw the gun.(when引导表语从句)
[高分句型2] That gunshot, originally aiming at Jonathan, unfortunately went through one leg of Bowzer, causing him unable to run.(现在分词作结果状语)
