    This perid lays emphasis n grammar,that is,the Attributive Clause,which is als the difficult pint in Senir English.
    First,revise what the students have learnt in the last perid by filling in the blanks in a passage and translating sme sentences frm Chinese int English.
    In this unit the students shuld learn t use the Relative Prnuns such as that,which,wh,whm and whse t intrduce an Attributive Clause. First,the teacher presents ne sentence cntaining an Attributive Clause,which was taken frm the reading passage. Teacher tries t analyze the sentence and let the students have a general idea abut what is an Attributive Clause. Then the students are asked t find all the sentences that cntain an Attributive Clause in the Reading passage. Next the teacher will explain the difference between these relative prnuns and als shw sme typical examples. After that,the students will chse the right relative prnuns t cmplete sme sentences.
    In rder t cnslidate the grammar,the students will d sme ral practice. In this practice,the students will tell each ther their wn unusual experiences. Then each grup will chse ne representative t reprt t the whle class. The students shuld nt nly learn abut the grammar,but als learn hw t use them,which is much mre imprtant. Als this part can help the students t cmmunicate with each ther using the language that they have learned,and this is the real purpse f learning languages.

    Step 1 Greetings
    Greet the whle class as usual.
    Step 2 Revisin
    T:In the last perid,we learned the usage f sme difficult wrds and expressins. Nw let’s check yur hmewrk exercises. Lk at Part 1 in Using Wrds and Expressins n Page 63.Describe an earthquake using the vcabulary in this unit. Then chse the wrds and expressins frm the bx t cmplete the passage. Change the frm if necessary.
    (One student reads the shrt passage. The teacher crrects any mistakes if there are any.)
    T:Then let’s cme t the next part. Translate the sentences int English using the wrds and expressins in the brackets. I will ask sme f yu t read the sentences.

    S2:When peple fund there was a secnd quake,they rushed ut f their huses right away.
    S3:After that terrible disaster,60 percent f the hmeless children were sent t ther safe cities t live.

    Step 3 Grammar
    (The teacher writes the sentence “Wrkers built shelters fr survivrs whse hmes had been destryed.” n the blackbard befre class begins.)
    T:Please lk at the sentence n the blackbard,paying special attentin t the underlined part. What kind f clause is it?
    Ss:The Attributive Clause.
    T:Yes. Yu are right. The Attributive Clause tells us which persn r thing (r what kind f persn r thing) the speaker means.
    e.g. The wman wh lives next dr is a teacher.
    A sentence with an attributive clause is a cmbinatin f tw shrter sentences. In the sentence abve,the tw shrt sentences are: “The wman is a teacher.” and “The wman lives next dr.” The Attributive Clause is the answer t the questin:Which wman is a teacher?
    Wuld yu try t divide the sample sentence n the blackbard int tw shrt sentences?

    T:That’s right. Nw try t find all the sentences with Attributive Clauses in the Reading passage.

    S3:It was heard in Beijing,which is ne hundred kilmeters away.
    S4:A huge crack that was eight kilmeters lng and thirty meters wide cut acrss huses,rads and canals.
    S5:The number f peple wh were killed r injured reached mre than 400000.
    S6:The army rganized teams t dig ut thse wh were trapped and t bury the dead.
    T:Very gd. Then which part f the Attributive Clause,d yu think,is the mst difficult ne?
    S7:The relative prnuns.
    T:Yu have nticed that many exercises abut the Attributive Clause are designed fr the students t chse a better relative prnun. S next I will say smething abut the cmmn relative prnuns.
    “Wh” is used fr peple.
    e.g. The man has been caught. He did the rbbery.
    →The man wh did the rbbery has been caught.
    “Which” is used fr things.
    e.g. The chair was a brken ne. I sat in the chair.
    →The chair which I sat in was a brken ne.
    “That” is used fr things r peple.
    e.g. A plane is a machine. It can fly.
    →A plane is a machine that can fly.
    Here is the by. He damaged the vase.
    →Here is the by that damaged the vase.
    “Whse” is used instead f his/her/their.
    e.g. She is the girl. Her English is the best in ur class.
    →She is the girl whse English is the best in ur class.
    “Whm” is quite frmal,and in mst cases it is all right t use wh instead. But when whm has a prepsitin befre it,it cannt be replaced by wh.
    e.g.(1)I wanted t see the wman. She had already left.
    →The wman whm/wh I wanted t see had already left.
    (2)The wrkers,sme f whm stayed here fr fur years,cme frm different cuntries.
    T:Nw lk at Part 2 in Discvering Useful Structures n Page 28.Try t cmplete each sentence using that,which,wh,r whse.
    (After several minutes.)
    S8:The terrible shaking f the building wke up all the peple wh were asleep.
    T:Oh,attentin,please. In this sentence we can’t use “whm”,because “whm” can’t act as a subject in the Attributive Clause.
    S9:S yu mean “wh” can act as a subject,while “whm” can act as an bject in an Attributive Clause.
    T:Yes. And “wh” can als act as an bject in the Attributive Clause. Nw,let’s cme t the next sentence.
    S10:The next day peple put up shelters in the pen air with all kinds f things that/which they culd find.
    S11:Several days later mst f the buildings that had been damaged were repaired.
    S12:We went t see ur teacher whse husband was killed in the earthquake.
    S13:A number f children whse parents had died in the quake were sent t live with families in ther cities.

    Step 4 Cnslidatin
    T:Nw we are ging t practice using the Attributive Clause. Think abut an unusual experience and hw yu felt. Wrk in grups. Take turns asking questins,using “Was it smething that?” r “Was there smene wh?” Take ntes abut the experiences f yur grup members and reprt back t the class.
    (Ss wrk in grups. Meanwhile the teacher ges arund the class and helps Ss deal with any difficulties that they may have.)

    定语从句关系词的选择
    1.只用that,不用which的情况:
    (1)当先行词是不定代词,如all,everything,anything,nthing,much,few,little,nne,the ne等。
    All that can be dne has been dne.
    (2)先行词前有the nly,few,ne f,little,n,all,every,very 等词修饰时。
    There is n difficulty that we can’t vercme.
    (3)先行词被序数词first,last,next等或形容词的最高级修饰时。
    This is the first letter that I’ve written in Japanese.
    (4)当先行词既有人又有物时。
    They talked abut the teachers and schls that they had visited.
    (5)当先行词是系动词be后面的表语或关系词本身是从句的表语时。

    (6)当主句是以wh,which或what开头的特殊疑问句时。

    3.as与which的比较:
    (1)在非限制性定语从句中,均可替代整个主句或句中的某个部分,在从句中作主语、宾语、表语,如从句在主句之后,两者皆可用;如从句在主句之前,用as。
