A

Once there was a small hotel whose keeper was always caring about money.

One day, a businessman arrived. The keeper looked at the man's thick wallet and thought, “Oh, I wish that all the money could be mine！” The businessman didn't notice that, so he ordered the most expensive room and went to his room to dress for dinner.

Around the hotel, there were some beautiful ginger(姜) plants. Many people said that eating the buds(芽)of ginger would make a person forgetful.

The keeper thought, “If I serve some buds of ginger to the businessman, he may be forgetful to take his wallet！” Then she went into the kitchen.

One night, a little swallow(燕子) flew over the city. He was very tired and wanted to have a good sleep in the city. When he saw the Statue(雕像) of the Happy Prince, he flew down and got ready to sleep between the feet of the Happy Prince.

 “It is very cold here and I am leaving for a warm place, but I will stay with you and do as you ask. ” The swallow took the bright red jewel from the Prince's sword and flew away with it in his mouth. He flew into the woman's room and put it beside the woman's needle(针). After he flew back, he told the Prince what he had done. “It's strange, ” he added. “It's so cold but I feel quite warm now. ”

Ancient China produced many types of beautiful works of art. Among them, calligraphy(书法), poetry(诗歌) and painting were the most famous. Often, they would be put together in art. They have become important since the Song Dynasty.

Calligraphy is the art of handwriting. In the old days, the Chinese considered writing as an important form of art. Calligraphers(书法家) would practise for years to learn to write perfectly. Each of over 40, 000 characters needed to be written correctly. And each stroke(笔画) in a character had to be written in a certain order.

Poetry was also an important form of art. Great poets were famous all over the country, and all educated people were expected to write poetry. During the Tang Dynasty, poetry was so important  that writing poetry was part of the examinations to become a civil servant(文官) and work for the government.

Chinese painting was often connected with calligraphy. It is one of the oldest artistic traditions in the world. The most traditional way of Chinese painting is known as “national painting(国画)” or “native painting”,  which is quite different from Western painting. People can draw mountains, houses, birds, trees and water on it.

The poet is happy as he thinks the rain is a living thing. It is smart enough to come in time for the farmer's busy season. When the rain comes, the night is peaceful and quiet. The spring rain finishes its task without being known. In the night sky, the clouds look dark and heavy. The light from the riverboat makes the dark scene a bit livelier. The poet imagines that tomorrow the city will become more beautiful when all of the flowers bloom after the good rain.
