    Many families take their children n vacatin. They will usually travel fr a few days r weeks during schl breaks. But Julie and Tim Smith planned a lnger vacatin with their tw children.     Mr. Smith says ne f the mst interesting experiences f the trip has been meeting new peple. He says peple have been extremely friendly, very welcming and lve their kids. Eleven-year-ld Tyler says he has enjyed learning abut the peple they have met. H e said, “I learned in Africa that peple have very different lifestyles than in America.” His sister, 9 -year-ld Kara, discvered that she liked Thai fd. Ms. Smith says that the trip teaches the children a lt.
    It tk the family a year t prepare fr the trip. They had t sell their huse and cars. Ms. Smith left her jb and her husband is using unpaid leave. They carry small bags filled with lightweight clthing and whatever else they need. Ms. Smith says she enjys being able t carry everything she needs n her back.     If yu live in a place where mst peple speak the language yu are learning, yu may use the language fr several hurs each day. S it may becme part f yur “inner speech.” In ther wrds, yu start thinking in that language. Yur mind stps trying t translate things frm yur native language int the secnd language. But mst f the English learners live in places where English in nt the main language. This may be true fr yu. Yu may nt have many
    chances t practice English. Yu may even be self-taught.
    Thinking in English really helps! It is nt very difficult, but it des need practice. Here we will share sme mental exercises. A gd first step is t think in wrds. Lk arund yu. What d yu see? In yur head, try t name each bject in yur surrundings. Charles Thmas has taught English fr ver 10 years. He tells his students t name the
    things that they see arund them, wherever they are.
    Anther exercise Thmas suggest is describing in yur mind bjects yu dn’t knw the wrds fr. An example wuld be if yu culdn’t think f the wrd “garage”.
