One popular view of Vincent Van Gogh is that his mental health problems gave him some of his artistic genius(天才)．But a new exhibition in Amsterdam’s Van Gogh Museum in the Netherlands argues that this was not the case．The exhibition questions whether depression helped the Dutch artist，who shot himself in a cornfield in Paris in 1890．
Using written documents and a gun that was found by a farmer in 1960 in that same cornfield，experts argue that，far from inspiring his art，Van Gogh’s illness actually stopped him working for long periods，and that he heroically fought against its uncreative effects．
The image of Van Gogh as a“mad genius”arguably comes from his own art．In his Self-Portrait With a Bandaged Ear(1889)，he focuses on the wound he gave himself when he cut off his left ear with a razor blade(剃须刀片)in December 1888．According to Jonathan Jones，the UK newspaper The Guardian’s art writer，this is a portrait of an artist both hurt and“liberated by madness”．
Similarly，the finding by American biographers Steven Naifeh and Gregory White Smith that Van Gogh was shot by someone else is challenged in the exhibition．The museum displays the gun he probably used in his suicide(自杀).Other evidence in the exhibition，including his last works of art that give away his dark thoughts，backs up the belief that Van Gogh died by suicide．
“Van Gogh was not successful during his own lifetime．”This is the idea that many people have about the famous artist．but is it true? It depends on how you see“Success”．For example，in March 1890，a few months before his death，10 of his works were on display at an important exhibition in Paris．
Critics had also started to praise him．J．J．Isaacson wrote in September 1889 that he was a pioneer，a lonely fighter in the dark night，and the generations to come should brand his name upon their memories：Vincent Van Gogh．He probably didn’t know how right he was．

A Canadian study suggests that current sodium intake levels are relatively safe for most Americans and that reducing them to the very low levels recommended by federal health officials and leading medical groups may harm a significant number.
The current average sodium consumption in the United States is about 3,400 milligrams (there are 1,000 milligrams in one gram) per day. This is about the amount of sodium in about 1.5 teaspoons of salt. Dietary guidelines offered by the federal government and leading medical groups recommend reducing the average to 2,300 milligrams for the general population and 1,500 for groups considered at greater risk, like adults older than 50, African-Americans, and people with high blood pressure, among others.
However, previous studies have found little evidence to support those low recommended sodium targets. There is considerable evidence that lowering sodium can reduce blood pressure, but there is scant (少量的) evidence that reducing sodium consumption will necessarily reduce the risk of heart attacks, strokes (中风) and death.
Now a large study by researchers at McMaster University in Ontario, Canada, which tracked more than 100,000 people from 17 countries on five continents, has found that the safest levels of sodium intake are between 3, 000 and 6,000 milligrams. Consumption below that level showed increased risk of death and cardiovascular (心血管的) events. Roughly 10 percent of the patients followed in the study fell below 3,000 milligrams, a sizable number to put at risk.
Brian Strom, honorary head of biomedical and health sciences at Rutgers University, who led a group of experts who reviewed the data on sodium for the Institute of Medicine last year, said that the new McMaster data are among the best available and that no study has shown a benefit from reducing sodium consumption to below 2,300 milligrams a day.
That does not mean individuals whose sodium intake is high should not take steps to bring it down. The McMaster researchers say that if your blood pressure rises beyond the normal level (140/90 or higher) or your sodium intake is high, you should reduce sodium consumption, perhaps even to below 5, 000 milligrams.

A new railway design is allowing the latest high-speed rail line to pass through national natural reserves while causing only minor effect to local wildlife.
The Xi’an-Chengdu high-speed rail is the first bullet train to cut through the Qinling Mountains, in Shaanxi province, which are home to many rare wild animals including the giant panda, golden monkey, crested ibis and golden takin.
It is one of three major habitats for the wild giant panda, with about 345 of China’s 1,864 wild giant pandas living there, according to the fourth National Survey on Giant Pandas released in 2015. The railway will also pass through a major Tianhuashan Mountain reserve, a giant panda habitat.
＂When researching the railway route, we avoided laying tracks more than 1,500 meters above sea level, where the majority of wildlife gathers,＂ said Lai Wenhong, an engineer from the China Railway First Survey and Design Institute Group, who is in charge of the railway’s environmental design.
More than 90 percent of the railway through the Qinling Mountains is tunnels and bridges, said Liu Shuangjin, general chief designer of the line’s Shaanxi section from the China Railway First Survey and Design Institute Group.
＂The advantage of tunnels is to reduce vibration(震动) when a train passes by,＂ Lai said.
The average depth of the tunnels is 400 meters, and the deepest is 1,000 meters. Bridges are constructed to link tunnels. Protective things have been placed at the mouths of tunnels in the Qinling Mountains to keep wild animals from falling. During operation, trains are forbidden from using horns in wildlife habitats.
The line also passes through the Yangxian county reserve, home to crested ibis, a rare bird. The 4-meter-high mesh(网状物) on the sides of bridges higher than 10 meters will prevent the birds from flying into the path of trains, which is safer for the birds and the trains.

One popular view of Vincent Van Gogh is that his mental health problems gave him some of his artistic genius(天才)．But a new exhibition in Amsterdam’s Van Gogh Museum in the Netherlands argues that this was not the case．The exhibition questions whether depression helped the Dutch artist，who shot himself in a cornfield in Paris in 1890．

A Canadian study suggests that current sodium intake levels are relatively safe for most Americans and that reducing them to the very low levels recommended by federal health officials and leading medical groups may harm a significant number.
The current average sodium consumption in the United States is about 3,400 milligrams (there are 1,000 milligrams in one gram) per day. This is about the amount of sodium in about 1.5 teaspoons of salt. Dietary guidelines offered by the federal government and leading medical groups recommend reducing the average to 2,300 milligrams for the general population and 1,500 for groups considered at greater risk, like adults older than 50, African-Americans, and people with high blood pressure, among others.
However, previous studies have found little evidence to support those low recommended sodium targets. There is considerable evidence that lowering sodium can reduce blood pressure, but there is scant (少量的) evidence that reducing sodium consumption will necessarily reduce the risk of heart attacks, strokes (中风) and death.
Now a large study by researchers at McMaster University in Ontario, Canada, which tracked more than 100,000 people from 17 countries on five continents, has found that the safest levels of sodium intake are between 3, 000 and 6,000 milligrams. Consumption below that level showed increased risk of death and cardiovascular (心血管的) events. Roughly 10 percent of the patients followed in the study fell below 3,000 milligrams, a sizable number to put at risk.

A new railway design is allowing the latest high-speed rail line to pass through national natural reserves while causing only minor effect to local wildlife.
The Xi’an-Chengdu high-speed rail is the first bullet train to cut through the Qinling Mountains, in Shaanxi province, which are home to many rare wild animals including the giant panda, golden monkey, crested ibis and golden takin.
It is one of three major habitats for the wild giant panda, with about 345 of China’s 1,864 wild giant pandas living there, according to the fourth National Survey on Giant Pandas released in 2015. The railway will also pass through a major Tianhuashan Mountain reserve, a giant panda habitat.
＂When researching the railway route, we avoided laying tracks more than 1,500 meters above sea level, where the majority of wildlife gathers,＂ said Lai Wenhong, an engineer from the China Railway First Survey and Design Institute Group, who is in charge of the railway’s environmental design.
More than 90 percent of the railway through the Qinling Mountains is tunnels and bridges, said Liu Shuangjin, general chief designer of the line’s Shaanxi section from the China Railway First Survey and Design Institute Group.
＂The advantage of tunnels is to reduce vibration(震动) when a train passes by,＂ Lai said.
The average depth of the tunnels is 400 meters, and the deepest is 1,000 meters. Bridges are constructed to link tunnels.
