It was days or even weeks since I had been left on the island. My only companion was a dog called Philly which had survived the shipwreck. Memories of what happened were still fresh.
The magnificence of the ship had given us all a false sense of security. As the first signs of the storm started, our captain announced it was nothing much, just another storm. Yet, he was wrong! The storm hit the ship so badly that large holes were made at the sides of the ship. As the freezing water started rushing in, our ship was consumed quickly by the dark water.
My train of thought was disturbed by Philly licking my hand dearly. “Are you hungry?” I spoke my first words ever since the shipwreck occurred. “Woof, woof!” Barked Philly enthusiastically. At this moment, my stomach gave a loud growl, too. I could not remember when my last meal was, probably a ten-course dinner on the ship. As I had never fished before, I thought maybe I could try something simpler, like picking fruits. With Philly at my side, armed with a sharp branch, we walked into the forest on the island together. Suddenly I thought I heard noises. Could there be anyone else on this island? I wondered. As we were looking for fruit trees, we chanced upon one that bore yellow, juicy-looking fruit. Philly started barking-we had company. It was a dark-skinned woman, holding a sharp spear, dressed in fur and grass. I backed away from her, afraid that she would be aggressive. Then, I saw that she was trying to save us. Pointing her spear at the fruit tree, she shook her head strongly.
I nodded at her to show I understood what she was saying. Signaling to us to follow her, she turned to walk along a small path that I had never noticed. At the end of the small path, there was a small village. Tears of joy filled my eyes.

C. To look for something to eat. D. To find someone for help.

When 4-year-old British royal family member Prince George started his first day of school in September, Chinese was on his curriculum(课程).
And he wasn't alone. According to a report published by the British Council in September, about 51 per cent of the UK parents want their children to learn Chinese, as it's believed to be one of the most useful languages.
In fact, the popularity of Chinese drove the UK government to launch the Mandarin Excellence Programme in September last year. Its aim is to make at least 5,000 British secondary school students fluent in Chinese by 2020.
Yet, the UK isn't the only country showing a growing interest in Chinese.
The language has become the second most spoken foreign language in the United States this year, after only Spanish, with over 2.1 million speakers, according to a survey by 24/7 Wall St, a US financial news website.
Many US celebrities, such as Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg and former US President Barack Obama's daughter Malia Obama, study Chinese as a second language.
In April, Arabella and Joseph Kushner, grandchildren of US President Donald Trump, performed the traditional folk song Jasmine in Mandarin for Chinese President Xi Jinping when the two leaders met in Florida.
So far, 67 countries and regions have included Chinese on their national curriculum, reported the China News Service.
As is known, China continues to develop rapidly and Chinese is increasingly becoming a useful tool for people's personal and professional growth.
“I think everyone believes that China will be the next great superpower...Even if it’s not a superpower like America, it's still very significant,” Aisling McCaffrey from Canada, who studied at the Renmin University of China, told Xinhua News Agency. “And learning Chinese is the best way to make sure that you can be part of that growth.”
28. The writer mentions Prince George's curriculum in order to ______.
A. compare Chinese with English
B. tell something about the royal family
C. introduce the topic of this passage
D. introduce the main character of the story
29. The reason why many UK parents want their children to learn Chinese is that ______.
A. Chinese is easy to learn
B. China is developing very fast
C. many famous people are learning Chinese
D. Chinese is one of the most useful languages in the world
30. The most popular foreign language in the USA is ______.
A. Chinese B. English C. Spanish D. French
31. A possible title of the passage may be ______.
A. How to learn Chinese B. Chinese’s influence worldwide
C. The importance of Chinese D. The charm of a language

The idea of robot rulers, friends and lovers has been a topic of science fiction novels for years.
But according to one mathematical model of how our brains create consciousness, emotional machines will never exist.
This is because computers can't handle any process that completely integrates (整合) information, so they cannot be conscious or feel, one expert says.
A mathematical model for consciousness, developed by Giulio Tononi at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, says that the ability to integrate information is a key feature of consciousness.
He believes that integrated information can't be broken down into smaller pieces in conscious minds, because the brain contextualizes (将……融入背景) information.
For example, when we see a red circle our brains don't see the shape as a colourless circle plus a shapeless coloured area, New Scientist reported. Instead we see it as a whole — a red circle; we understand the “wider picture”.
It's easy enough for machines to edit a collection of individual images (图像), but memories are made up of a bank of intertwined (相互交织的) images and experiences and cannot be changed in the same way.
Researchers have used mathematics to show that computers cannot handle the complex processes needed to fit pieces of information together perfectly.
Therefore, if consciousness is based on the integration of lots of pieces of information, computers can't be conscious and can't experience emotions like humans.
Professor Phil Maguire of the National University of Ireland in Maynooth says that consciousness cannot be created in a physical machine in limited time using limited memory.
“It doesn't necessarily mean that there is some magic going on in the brain that involves some forces that can't be explained physically. It is just so complex that it's beyond our abilities to change it,” he said.
His research may mean that lonely humans will not find love with a robot; they are unlikely to be made their slaves either.
32. Why do experts think emotional machines won't exist?
A. Machines can't solve problems.
B. Machines can't integrate information.
C. Machines can't handle information.
D. Machines can't communicate with people.
33. The example mentioned in Paragraph 6 is used to show _____.
A. machines cannot feel
B. the brain has consciousness
C. machines can recognize shapes and colors
D. the brain can contextualize information
34. It can be learned from the text that _____.
A. the idea of robot lovers won't come true
B. machines can edit intertwined images
C. robots can fit pieces of information together perfectly
D. computers can experience emotions like humans one day
35. What would be the best title for the text?
A. How robots work
B. Robots will never have feelings
C. Will robots become people's friends?
D. What will robots be like in the future?

书面表达范文:
Dear Mr. Smith,
I am Li Hua, chairman of the Student Union of Xin Hua High School. Thank you for inviting us to visit your school in the coming summer vacation, for which we do feel honored. Now I am writing for detailed information.
Since it is our first trip to Britain, we would like to know more about our accommodation arrangements. If possible, we prefer to live in host families to experience the British culture. Besides, could you please send the schedule to me at your convenience? In terms of the Chinese traditional culture, we intend to introduce the Chinese festivals, considering there is growing interest in them. For better interaction, fellow students of your school can prepare some relevant questions beforehand.
I’d appreciate it if you could give us an early reply. Wish our interaction activity a great success! Thank you for your attention! Best wishes!
Yours,
Li Hua
