Spnges (海绵)-is there anything they can't d? Fr thusands f years, humans have used dried natural spnges t clean up, t paint and as cntainers t cnsume liquids like water r hney. Whether artificial r natural, spnges are great at cllecting tiny pieces with their many small hles.
Recently, researchers in China published a study describing their develpment f an artificial spnge that makes shrt wrk f remving micrplastic pieces. The tests shw that when a specially prepared plastic-filled slutin (溶液) is pushed thrugh ne f their spnges, the spnge can remve micrplastics and even smaller nanplastics frm the liquid. Researchers tried it in everything frm tap water and seawater t sup frm a lcal takeut spt.
Accrding t Guqing Wang, a materials chemist at Ocean University f China and c-authr f the paper, the spnge is adjustable. By adjusting the temperature, the spnge can be made t have mre r fewer hles, which affects the size f the micrplastic pieces cllected. The spnge, if ever prduced n an industrial scale, Wang says, culd be used in wastewater treatment factries t remve micrplastics frm the water r in fd prductin facilities t avid plluting water.
There are shrtcmings t the spnge's pssible adptin, thugh. The spnge is made mstly frm starch and gelatin (淀粉和明胶), which are imprtant t the fd industry, meaning that there culd be intense cmpetitin fr the key ingredients in the future. "But we knw that small satellites are just increasing rapidly everywhere."
Thse GPS satellites are imprtant because they cnstantly exchange radi signals with grund statins. Crucially, the speed f the radi signals is affected by the density (密度) f charged particles (带电粒子) in an area f Earth's insphere (电离层). Tsunami-caused shck waves travelling up int the atmsphere affect the density f these particles, generating small but measurable changes in the satellite radi signals.
Cnstantinu and his clleagues develped a cmputer prgram t measure changes in the density f these charged particles caused by the frmatin f a tsunami and then transfrmed the data int images that can be analysed by AI mdels. They then tasked the AI with identifying tsunami-related features within the images.
The researchers trained and tested the AI n data frm three earthquake-caused tsunamis: ne that struck Chile in 2010, a 2011 event in Japan and an event that ccurred ff Canada's west cast in 2012. They then cnfirmed the AI's perfrmance n data frm a furth tsunami, which was caused by the 2015 Ⅲapel earthquake ff the cast f Chile. This shwed hw well the AI culd distinguish tsunami-related disturbances frm nrmal variatins in the insphere.
