I was surprised t find the cngestin (拥塞) utside Layla's primary schl was unusually absent-I'd driven right int a parking space, and I was n time, fr nce. The schl bell rang, and in a mment a stream f children made their way thrugh the gate. But smething was different-the kids were piling int vehicles in threes and furs.
Befre I culd enquire my daughter Layla, Mr Trent, the deputy head, apprached. "Mrs Pavis, did yu nt read ur letter?" Letter? What letter? I had a histry f nt lking ut fr them, and nt reading them in mst cases. "The letter? Of curse. It must have just slipped-my mind-I've been away with wrk."
Nw I was digging arund in Layla's messy schlbag at hme. Eventually, I fund several letters, all addressing the same tpic-parking utside the schl gates. Apparently with sme parents parking illegally, the plice were abut t get invlved. "Why didn't yu give me these letters?" I demanded. Layla shrugged. "I frgt." I was abut t launch int a severe lecture when it ccurred t me that I had always frgtten-I had frgtten t give Layla her mney fr ckery that mrning and frgtten t hang ut the kids' washed clthes.
I cntained myself and figured ut that they wanted the parents t car-pl (拼车). I spent the next half hur ringing rund Layla's friends' parents, enquiring if they wuld like t car-pl with us. Unfrtunately, they were all srted. It was my wn fault--I shuld have read thse letters ages ag. "Er…I verheard thers talking abut it," Layla said, "They said they didn't knw wh wuld car-pl with us, because we're always late." I flushed instantly. We were a disrganized family, and I was the ne t blame.
I reslved t change. With respnsibility fr my kids, I find I am never, ever late. It's gd fr Layla and fr her lder brthers, and it's gd fr me, because nw I never leave the huse unprepared. I've even started checking the kids' schlbags fr ntes frm schl.

Spnges (海绵)-is there anything they can't d? Fr thusands f years, humans have used dried natural spnges t clean up, t paint and as cntainers t cnsume liquids like water r hney. Whether artificial r natural, spnges are great at cllecting tiny pieces with their many small hles.
Recently, researchers in China published a study describing their develpment f an artificial spnge that makes shrt wrk f remving micrplastic pieces. The tests shw that when a specially prepared plastic-filled slutin (溶液) is pushed thrugh ne f their spnges, the spnge can remve micrplastics and even smaller nanplastics frm the liquid. Researchers tried it in everything frm tap water and seawater t sup frm a lcal takeut spt.
Accrding t Guqing Wang, a materials chemist at Ocean University f China and c-authr f the paper, the spnge is adjustable. By adjusting the temperature, the spnge can be made t have mre r fewer hles, which affects the size f the micrplastic pieces cllected. The spnge, if ever prduced n an industrial scale, Wang says, culd be used in wastewater treatment factries t remve micrplastics frm the water r in fd prductin facilities t avid plluting water.
There are shrtcmings t the spnge's pssible adptin, thugh. The spnge is made mstly frm starch and gelatin (淀粉和明胶), which are imprtant t the fd industry, meaning that there culd be intense cmpetitin fr the key ingredients in the future. Besides, starch and gelatin are able t break dwn naturally and harmlessly. Hwever, the prcess develped by Wang and his c-wrkers t make their spnge uses frmaldehyde, a highly pisnus chemical, and there were small amunts f this in the spnge itself.
When it cmes t dealing with micrplastic pllutin in the cean, Alice Hrtn at the United Kingdm's Natinal Oceangraphy Center says what she is cnfident abut is that effrts t remve micrplastics after they have already reached the cean are prbably certain t fail. "I dn't think there is anything we can d n a large enugh scale that will have any impact," she says. "We have t stp them getting there in the first place."
28.What special characteristic f the new spnges is shwn during the tests?
    A. Their envirnmental friendliness.
    B. Their perability and lw prductin csts.
    C. Their gd perfrmance in catching plastic pieces.
    D. Their pssibility f helping break dwn micrplastics.
29.What will be a pssible prblem if the new spnges are prduced in large numbers?
    A. The high cst f recycling them.B. The pr quality f the prducts.
    C. A shrtage f the raw material.D. A lack f skillful peratrs.
30.What's Alice's pinin in regard t remving plastic frm the cean?
    A. All rads lead t Rme.B. Time and tide wait fr n man.
    C. Many hands make light wrk.D. Preventin is better than cure.
31.What is the authr's main purpse in writing the text?
    A. T advertise a new spnge.B. T intrduce a new inventin.
    C. T stress the damage f plastic.D. T ppularize the spnge's usage.
A better early warning system fr tsunamis may sn be pssible with the help f artificial intelligence. AI technlgy can detect very small disturbances in satellite signals when a tsunami's waves begin t frm, which culd bring felicity t castal cmmunities, prviding warnings lng befre the tsunami hits.
"There is n glbal netwrk fr detecting tsunami waves, and setting up physical hardware, like buy-based systems, is expensive," says Valentin Cnstantinu at Teran Orbital Crpratin, a satellite manufacturing cmpany based in Flrida. "But we knw that small satellites are just increasing rapidly everywhere."
Thse GPS satellites are imprtant because they cnstantly exchange radi signals with grund statins. Crucially, the speed f the radi signals is affected by the density (密度) f charged particles (带电粒子) in an area f Earth's insphere (电离层). Tsunami-caused shck waves travelling up int the atmsphere affect the density f these particles, generating small but measurable changes in the satellite radi signals.
Cnstantinu and his clleagues develped a cmputer prgram t measure changes in the density f these charged particles caused by the frmatin f a tsunami and then transfrmed the data int images that can be analysed by AI mdels. They then tasked the AI with identifying tsunami-related features within the images.
The researchers trained and tested the AI n data frm three earthquake-caused tsunamis: ne that struck Chile in 2010, a 2011 event in Japan and an event that ccurred ff Canada's west cast in 2012. They then cnfirmed the AI's perfrmance n data frm a furth tsunami, which was caused by the 2015 Ⅲapel earthquake ff the cast f Chile. This shwed hw well the AI culd distinguish tsunami-related disturbances frm nrmal variatins in the insphere.
But Cnstantinu says it remains t be seen if perfrmance based n data frm fur tsunami events can lead t accurate detectin f a mre diverse set f tsunamis and the rarity f huge tsunamis makes it challenging t analyse and predict such events. A truly effective tsunami detectin system wuld als require internatinal cperatin t share data frm satellite statins.
32.What des the underlined wrd "felicity" prbably mean in Paragraph 1?
    A. Challenge.B. Welfare.C. Qualificatin.D. Freedm.
33.Why d GPS satellites matter t tsunami detectin?
    A. They stay steady in extreme weather cnditins.
    B. They can predict the exact lcatin f a cming tsunami.
    C. Their signals can directly pass thrugh Earth's insphere.
    D. Their signals can reflect charged particle density changes.
34.What was the data frm the 2015 tsunami used fr?
    A. Shwing the damage brught by tsunamis.
    B. Prving the accuracy f the AI's perfrmance.
    C. Helping the AI analyse tsunami infrmatin.
    D. Offering basic infrmatin n tsunami detectin skills.
35.What may be a suitable title fr the text?
    A. AI can spt early signs f a tsunami
    B. A tsunami warning system is n the way
    C. Satellites play a key rle in glbal cperatin
    D. Tsunamis wn't be a threat t humans in the future
