Gym class was nt cnsidered imprtant at the private schl I attended frm kindergarten t Grade 6 and the wrds “mvement skill develpment” wuld have caused brws t wrinkle.
Fr Grades 7 and 8, I mved int the public schl system. It was the early 1980s and we had t wear green gym shrts and white T-shirts with the schl crest (校徽) n them. We had t climb rpes. We had t g fr lng runs in the valley beside the schl and excuses were nt allwed.

One day I arrived fr gym class with my nte explaining why I culd nt participate. It was signed by my “mther”. There were at least tw classes f Grade 8 girls sitting n the side f the hill when I bldly (冒失地) presented my nte. The PE teacher asked me why my mther’s signature lked s messy. What I said next might be the finest example f just hw stupid I was when I was 13: “It’s messy because she signed it while she was driving.”
My classmates giggled (咯咯笑) nervusly. I thught maybe I had pushed things t far but wasn’t prepared fr what happened next at all. The teacher grabbed my ear and dragged me all the way up the millins f stairs, thrugh the miles f hallways, and int the principal’s ffice. That was where my memries frm junir high gym class ended.
The next year I went t the first day f Grade 9 gym with a psitive utlk, high hpes, and gd intentins. But all I ended up develping was the habit f hiding in the girls ‘bathrm fr the duratin f the class.
When my cunsellr (辅导员) called a meeting between me and the gym teacher later that year, I remember the teacher lking at me and saying, “I wuldn’t knw this girl was in my class if I hit her with my car.”

One f the cean’s nisiest creatures is smaller than yu’d expect — snapping shrimp (鼓虾). They create a widespread backgrund nise in the underwater envirnment, which helps them cmmunicate, prtect their hmes and hunt fr fd. When enugh shrimp snap (发出噼啪声) at nce, the nise can be deafening.
Aran Mney, a bilgist at Wds Hle Oceangraphic Institutin, suggested that with increased cean temperatures, snapping shrimp will snap mre ften and luder than befre. This culd raise the backgrund nise f the glbal cean. “They make a sund by clsing a claw s fast. This makes a bubble (泡泡) and when that bubble bursts, it makes that snapping sund,” said Mney.
Mney discvered a strng relatinship between warmer waters and mre frequent snapping shrimp sunds after experimenting with the shrimp in tanks in the lab and by listening t the shrimp in the cean at varius water temperatures. “As the temperature rises, the snap rate increases,” he said. This makes sense because shrimp are essentially cld-blded animals, meaning their bdy temperature and activity levels are largely cntrlled by their living envirnment. “We can actually shw in the field that nt nly d snap rates increase, but the sund levels increase as well.”
Hw the luder snapping shrimp wuld affect r benefit the surrundings remained t be seen. “We knw that fish use sund t cmmunicate,” Mney said. “If the envirnment gets nisy, it has the pssibility t influence that cmmunicatin. That’s smething we have t fllw up n.” There is als the pssibility that the change f snapping shrimp affects machines humans use t discver mines, which culd lead t unpleasant results.
    7. What can we knw abut the snapping shrimp’s sund?
    A. It aims t prtect the shrimp.B. It is imprtant t the ecsystem.
    C. It has different uses fr the shrimp.D. It is hard t be discvered by ther creatures.
    8. Hw des Mney d the experiment?
    A. By bserving snapping shrimp in the field.B. By recrding the snap rates in the lab.
    C. By analyzing the way shrimp make nise.D. By cmparing shrimp’s sund in different places.
    9. What might Mney research next?
    A. Other uses f shrimp’s sund.B. Influences f the nise n ther creatures.
    C. Means f cmmunicatin amng fish.D. Methds f stpping shrimp’s snapping.
    10. Which f the fllwing culd be the best title fr the text?
    A. Underwater Wrld Is N Lnger QuietB. Small Animals Make a Big Difference
    C. Warming Oceans Are Getting LuderD. Snapping Shrimp’s Nise Speaks Much
