In September, I received a message frm my third-grade sn's schl that he was reading at a secnd-grade level. I was a bit alarmed by the news. Fr ne, my sn is ld fr his class; fr anther, I am a reading lver and believe in the pwer f bks.
S the fact that my wn sn - wh is bright and scres extremely high in math - was struggling in reading hit me a little, but it was nt a surprise. Like many children, he fell behind during the pandemic, and ur effrts t make him get caught up at hme were pretty ineffective. Fr example, as parents, we didn't d a gd enugh jb f finding the right bks t naturally aruse his interest and curisity. Anther issue was that at sme pint he began t feel self-cnscius abut reading, which created a strng dislike f bks.
Abut tw mnths ag, I had just finished reading a stry t my 6-year-ld sn wh shares a bedrm with his lder brther. I went t flick the light ff when my lder sn said smething I'd never heard befre
“Can I read fr just ten mre minutes?” he asked, shwing me his bk n prfessinal ftball players.
I f curse readily gave my apprval and tld this t my wife. “They're ding a reading cmpetitin at schl, which is abut bys against girls,” she said. “Every minute f his reading is nw added t their scre. S nw he wants t read - because it's a cmpetitin.” Over the next several weeks. my sn leapt nearly tw reading levels.
I dn't dubt that sme will lk at this strategy with disdain (鄙视). We're taught tday that cmpetitin is stupid, even harmful. This is nnsense, f curse. It's the frce that drve Rger Bannister t break the fur-minute mile. It's given us the achievements f Michael Phelps and Michael Jrdan. We shuld recgnize that cmpetitin is a healthy frce. It's capable f nt nly lifting tens f millins f peple frm pverty but als galvanizing (激励) a 9-year-ld child int pushing himself t read. That's pwer.
    4. What made the authr feel wrried at first?
    A. His sn's lw reading level.
    B. His sn's being verage fr his class.
    C. His sn's strng preference fr math.

    D T stress the significance f cmpetitin.
    6. What des the authr think f cmpetitin in educatin?

    C. It is beneficial and shuld be encuraged
    D. It deepens discriminatin against certain peple.

Using needles t deliver drugs has been cmmn fr mre than a century. The past hundred years have seen all manner f medical advances, frm life-saving medicine and X-rays t mRNA vaccines and special cancer treatments. Yet the needle has stayed mstly unchanged. Althugh nw available in a variety f different sizes, it remains a hllw (having a hle r empty space inside), pinty tube.
With luck, that may sn change. As Yichi Ma, a scientist at the University f Califrnia, Berkeley, and his clleagues utline in a review paper, researchers arund the wrld are lking fr ways t ease the pain when needles g int the skin. Many have been inspired by nature.
The team gt their idea frm msquites, which manage t get their bld meals withut causing great pain t peple. One reasn is that the insects use painkilling chemicals when they first puncture (刺穿) the skin. But there is anther reasn, The pint f a msquit's saw-like prbscis (锯齿状的喙) is sfter at its tip. The insect makes the skin f its target tight befre biting, and shakes its prbscis as it pushes the prbscis in. All f this helps reduce the frce needed t puncture the skin.
One paper, published in 2020 by a grup f researchers in America and China, fund that a msquit-inspired needle required 27% less puncturing frce than an rdinary ne. And less frce means less pain Msquit-inspired needles might als be useful fr delicate prcedures such as bipsies (the examinatin f tissue taken frm a living bdy). A paper frm the University f Michigan, als published in 2020, fund that scientists culd imprve bipsies f tissue in sme bdy rgans. The lwer frce led t less mvement f the rgan itself, ensuring that the needles were guided accurately t the area that needed sampling.
Fr nw, such devices remain limited t labs. But there is a big market fr better needles. Accrding t WHO, arund 16 billin injectins were given in 2018. With ne persn in fur saying they suffer frm a fear f needles, the savings n stickers and sweets fr the brave suls wh rll up their sleeves wuld be cnsiderable.
8 What can we infer abut needles frm Paragraph 1?
    A. Their imprtance has been ignred fr lng

    A. T shw peple's anxiety abut injectins.
    B. T highlight the limitatins f current needle designs,
    C. T draw attentin t the dangers f t many injectins.
    D. T emphasize the ptential demand fr imprved needles.

Recently, I pulled a jacket frm my wardrbe, paired it with my red trusers and earrings, and hit the twn fr a bk signing event. That night, I fund myself unexpectedly satisfied. I gt mre praise ver this jacket than I had gt in years. But what made me feel way better was t respnd, “Thank yu. I bught it at a secnd-hand shp.”
Nt nly did I spend minimal amunt n a clearly unbelievable find, but I als jined the ranks f cnsumers turning t circular fashin”-a grwing trend in refreshing ur wardrbe and prducing new clthes in mre planet-friendly ways.
As fr the clthing industry; it prduces clse t 10% f the wrld's carbn dixide emissins (碳排放) and is a massive cnsumer f the wrld's water supplies. T create a single pair f jeans, fr example, requires nearly 2,000 gallns f water. And each year, arund 8 billin barrels f il are used t prduce artificial materials.
Cnsumers als cntribute t the prblem. They buy cheap new clthes, wear them a few times, and then thrw them ut. The Envirnmental Prtectin Agency (EPA) estimates that Americans threw away 16 millin tns f clthing in 2018, with nly 15 percent recycled--the rest ended up in landfills r being exprted abrad.
Smething’s gt t give. Scientists are wrking t develp less harmful carbn-negative fabrics, while sme leading brands are shifting frm linear take-make-waste ecnmies t circular nes in which fewer clthes are made, waste and pllutin are vastly reduced, and the used clthing is given new life.
But there’s als a rle fr the individual in addressing the prblem. “Fllwing the circular fashin, yu’ll build an affrdable cupbard that's better fr the planet,” says Gama, c-funder f a cmpany that helps brands scare their recycling and resale prgrams.
Accrding t ThredUP, the wrld’s largest fashin resale platfrm, the U.S. secnd-hand market is expected t mre than duble by 2026. “Our resale reprt data fund that ver half f the cnsumers are mre ppsed t waste, bth financially and envirnmentally, says ThredUP president Anthny Marin.
    12. What amazed the authr at the bk signing event?
    A. Peple thught highly f her bks.
    B. Peple gt attracted by “circular fashin”
    C. She gt thers’ recgnitin fr her dressing
    D. She had the chance t buy secnd-hand gds.
    13. What d the statistics in Paragraph 3 mainly indicate?
    A. The high csts f artificial materials.
B The seriusness f envirnmental pllutin.
    C. The necessity f prducing artificial materials.
    D. The high envirnmental csts f the clthing industry.
    14. What are sme large brand cmpanies’ effrts mainly abut?
    A. Imprving the quality f their clthes.
    B. Researching recyclable clthing materials.
    C. Prmting a sustainable clthing industry.
    D. Making their clthes affrdable t cnsumers.
    15. What is Marin’s attitude t the develpment f secnd-hand markets?
    A. Uncertain.B. Cnfident.C. Objective.D. Curius.
