Kunta is a small attractive stone-built town in England. Water is a natural gateway to the Cheviot Hills and the Northumberland National Park. From its main street formed by the Market Place and High Street three roads lead off through the foothills into the National Park. The main street has hotels, specialist shops, pottery(陶器) factories and grocery stores. The shopping centre in the area has a reputation for friendly, helpful service.

The beauty of the surrounding scenery is eye-opening: on the one side the fallen sandstone goes across the valley below and on the other the wonderful Cheviot Hills rising behind the town to form a splendid background. Alnwick is a town with a historic castle and the famous Alnwick Gardens lie a few miles south while the Scottish Borders are within easy travelling distance from Kunta on clean country roads. Therefore, the town is an excellent place for a holiday. It offers a wide range of accommodation, ranging from youth hostels(招待所), campsites to local hotels. The summer months see the town’s High Streets become a busy scene of local people and visitors. Each July the town holds its Glendale festival with a program of events spread over the weekend.

Activities to do in Kunta include bowling, skiing, junior football clubs, fitness clubs, running, tennis, and walking. The industries are sheep farming and tourism.

There is much evidence of settlements throughout the area dating back to pre Bronze(青铜器) Age times. The Roman period seems to have had little impact on the area. In the twelfth century, it was ruled by Anglo Saxons, then Danish and eventually the Normans. In the twelfth century, the population was little more than eighteen hundred.

    A. It is a small attractive town built on the top of a mountain.

    B. It is a small beautiful English town built of stones.

    C. It is near the most beautiful national park in England.

    D. The largest shopping centre in England lies in Kunta.

    42. Kunta is an excellent place for a holiday mainly because of its________.

    A. beauty of the surrounding scenery B. friendly and helpful service

    C. wide range of accommodation D. historic castles and famous gardens

    43. In the last paragraph, the author introduces Kunta’s________.

    A. people B. location

    C. environment D. history

Why second best is best for my kids?

“All I want for him is to be happy all his life,” I said softly when my son Jack was born. I probably followed it up with, “I want only the best for him”.

I want my kids to be happy more than anything, and I’ve realized wanting the best for them and treating them with “only the best” policy are not pathways to happiness. They are pathways to rude kids and parental misery(悲惨).

I've accepted the “second best” belief of parenting. Actually I may have invented it — or given it a name, at least. It is a belief easy to get into but I see “only the best” parents all the time. Some of them are my good friends. The problem is, I never get to talk to them because they’re too busy going to school on open days or racing from gymnastics to guitar lessons to get together for coffee with me.

I say “Why don’t you send your daughter to the gymnastics centre in the town?” and my friend Jen will say, “I would, but the one at Cleveland is so much better. The head coach was a world champion.”

It’s on the tip of my tongue to tell my friend she treats her child like royalty, but I don’t. It’s none of my business (although it is) and I worry that will influence our friendship. Anyhow, I’m not the one driving a 40 km round trip for a nine-year-old’s gymnastics class.

Being satisfied with second best for your kids is quite different from expecting second best from them. It’s important they try their hardest, use their best manners, do what they believe is right. What I doubt is parents sacrificing( ) their happiness for their kids’ happiness and the ones who are paying for things their child doesn’t need and they can’t afford. It’s a belief that everyone else is doing something and if they don’t, their kid will be left behind.

The happiest families I know are the ones with the most relaxed parents. And mostly, they’re happy with second-best children, because that’s what’s best for them.

    48. What is the best for children according to the author?

    A. To feel happy all the time.

    B. To be talented in many ways.

    C. To be the best in any field especially at school.

    D. To make their parents happy with excellent performance.

    49. Why doesn’t the author talk to “only the best” parents?

    A. They are too busy with their jobs and housework.

    B. They are too busy making their children best.

    C. They look down upon the author’s opinion.

    D. Their children are in different schools.

    50. Why doesn’t the author tell Jen her real opinion?

    A. She worries that will influence Jen’s daughter.

    B. She knows the head coach was once a world champion.

    C. She doesn’t want their relation to be influenced.

    D. She doesn’t know anything about gymnastics classes.

    51. In the author’s opinion, the happiest families are those with parents who are ________.

    A. sacrificing their happiness for their kids’ happiness

    B. paying for things for their child even if they can’t afford

    C. making every effort to avoid their children being left behind

    D. satisfied with their second-best children with relaxed minds

    D

As birth order is clearly one of the many factors that affect development, we should pay much attention to it. Big brothers and sisters usually develop leadership early in life, mainly because of the responsibilities for younger children given to them by their parents. The danger, experts on family and child psychology report, is that if the older child takes that role to an extreme, he or she can become an overbearing adult.

Studies of nearly 300 people have found that firstborns are usually the most strongly motivated toward achievement. This is mainly the result of parental expectations. Research also suggests that firstborn children generally become more conservative than other children because they receive most of the parental orders and rules. Used to caring for others, they are more likely to move toward such leadership professions as teaching and politics. Less social and flexible because they become accustomed in the very early years to acting alone, they may have difficulty making close friends.

By contrast, the researchers say later children are more likely to be more relaxed and sociable than the eldest child because their parents are more relaxed. However, later children are often less ambitious and may be uncomfortable making decisions for others, and will seek work that fits their needs. This may help explain why younger children tend to favor the creative fields such as music, art, and writing. Later children may make good sellers because persuasion may have been the only tool they had to deal with older children. Younger children tend to remain forever “the baby” enjoyable to be around, but at times too dependent on others.

    52. The underlined word “overbearing” in the first paragraph means________.

    A. trying to make other people obey without regard for their ideas or feelings

    B. being unable to express what one really feels or to do what one really wants

    C. favoring the established order of society and not liking change

    D. changing easily to adapt to new needs conditions or ideas

    53. It can be inferred from the passage that a younger child is more likely to be a good________.

    A. librarian B. doctor C. writer D. teacher

    54. Later children may become good sellers because they________.

    A. feel uneasy when making decisions for other people B. are very good at persuading others

    C. have great ambition to develop leadership D. are more relaxed and sociable

    55. What’s the best title of this passage?

    A. Which Is Better: Being the Eldest or the Youngest? B. Birth Order Factor in Marriage

    C. The Relation between Birth Order and Job Success D. Effects of Birth Order on One’s Personality
