Are you looking to load up your e-reader with some new books to promote your career? Well, look no further. Here are four best sellers for you!

The Boss of You by Lauren Bacon & Emira Mears

This book is a goldmine for women looking to start their own business. As a freelance writer (自由撰稿人), I read it several times when I decided to begin a career. I've folded so many pages in this book, and found some sections especially helpful, like the ones on figuring out start-up costs, drawing up a budget, and the ways to market yourself.

    Suggested by Steph Auteri

The Path from Motherhood to Career by Diane Lang

I have used this book professionally myself after having my first child. Ms. Lang gives several choices that have worked for the women. At 62 pages long, every word counts. For moms that are still weighing choices, this book will help them decide if indeed it is time to go back to work.

    Suggested by Anne Newton

Minding Her Own Business by Jan Zobel

Taxes are the same for women as are for men. Yet many women seem to have number anxiety that makes them feel they can’t deal well with their money. As a tax expert, I've seen this among my clients (客户) over the years. This book is designed for one-person businesses. Read it, and you’ll know what taxes to pay and what you needn’t.

    Suggested by Jan Zobel

The Relationship Edge in Business by Jerry Acuff

For most women, the biggest challenges in our lives are the relationships we build and develop with our family and friends. Jerry explains how we can use those same relationship-building skills to build good relationships with our customers and co-workers that will help our business to grow soundly.

    Suggested by Cyndy Kryder

    1. What do we know about Steph Auteri from her recommending words?

    A. She was out of employment. B. She was the author of the book.

    C. She's read the book carefully. D. She's made a fortune by writing.

    2. What is Minding Her Own Business intended to do?

    A. To help readers manage taxes. B. To tell readers how to start business.

    C. To advise readers to get on with colleagues. D. To assist readers with re-employment.

    3. What do the four books have in common?

    A. They are written by the same author. B. They are recommended by experts.

    C. They are intended for women. D. They are free to download.

    B

Twenty-one years ago, my husband gave me Sam, an eight-week-old schnauzer(雪纳瑞犬), to help ease the loss of our daughter. Sam and I developed a very special bond over the next years.

At one point, my husband and I decided to move to a new home in New Jersey. Our neighbor, whose cat had recently had kittens, asked if we would like one. We were a little apprehensive about Sam’s jealousy and how he would handle his turf(地盘)being invaded, but we decided to risk it.

We picked a little, gray, playful ball of Fur. She raced around chasing imaginary mice and squirrels and jumped from table to chair in the blink of an eye, so we named her Lightning.

At first, Sam and Lightning were very cautious with each other and kept their distance. But slowly, Lightning started following Sam — up the stairs, down the stairs, into the kitchen. Later, when they slept, it was always together; when they ate, it was always next to each other. When I took either one out, the other was always waiting by the door when we returned. That was the way it was for years.

Then, without any warning, Sam was diagnosed as having a weak heart. I had no other choice but to have him put down. The pain was nothing compared with what I experienced when I had to walk into our house alone. This time, there was no Sam for Lightning to greet and no way to explain why she would never see her friend again.

In the following days, Lightning seemed heart-broken. I could see the disappointment in her eyes whenever anyone opened the front door, or the hope whenever she heard a dog bark.

One day as I walked into our living room, I happened to see Lightning was lying next to the sculptured replica(复制品)of Sam that we had bought a few years ago, one arm wrapped around the statue’s neck, contentedly sleeping with her best friend.

    4. What does the underlined word “apprehensive” in paragraph 2 mean?

    A. Shocked. B. Curious.

    C. Worried. D. Eager.

    5. How did Sam get along with Lightning at first?

    A. Lightning followed Sam everywhere it went.

    B. They fought with each other fiercely.

    C. They kept a certain distance from each other.

    D. Sam was unfriendly to Lightning.

    6. What can we infer from the text?

    A. Lightning knew Sam had died.

    B. Sam means a lot to Lightning.

    C. We took Lightning home to accompany Sam.

    D. Sam came back to stay with Lightning again.

    7. What can be the best title of the text?

    A. The Friendship between Sam and Lightning

    B. The Coming of Sam and Lightning

    C. The Death of Sam to Lightning

    D. The Importance of Sam to Us

    C

On numerous drives with my mom through my childhood, she would suddenly pull over the car to examine a flower by the side of the road or rescue a beetle from danger while I, in my late teens and early twenties, sat impatiently in the car.

Though Mother's Day follows Earth Day, for me, they have always been related to each other. My mom has been ''green'' since she became concerned about the environment. Part of this habit was born of thrift(节俭). Like her mother and her grandmother before her, mom saves glass jars, empty cheese containers and reuses her plastic bags.

Mom creates a kind of harmonious relationship with wildlife in her yard. She knows to pick the apples on her trees a little early to avoid the bears and that if she leaves the bird feeders out at night, it is likely that they will be knocked down by a family of raccoons(浣熊). Spiders that make their way into the house and are caught in juice glasses will be set loose in the garden.

I try to teach my children that looking out for the environment starts with being aware of the environment. On busy streets, we look for dandelions(蒲公英)to fly in the wind; we say hello to neighborhood cats and pick up plastic cups and paper bags. This teaching comes easily, I realize, because I was taught so well by example. Mom didn’t need to lecture; she didn't need to beat a drum to change the world. She simply slowed down enough to enjoy living in it and with that joy came mercy and an instinct(直觉)for protection.

I am slowing down and it isn't because of the weight of my nearly forty years on the planet, it is just out of my concern for the planet itself. I've begun to save glass jars and reuse packing envelopes. I pause in my daily tasks to watch the squirrels race each other in the trees above my house.

Last summer, I planted tomatoes in my yard. With the heat of August around me, I enjoyed my tomatoes while sitting on my low wall. I immediately wanted to share with my mom.

    8. Why does the author say Earth Day is connected with Mother's Day?

    A. Because Mother's Day falls shortly after Earth Day.

    B. To stress that all the older women are environmentalists.

    C. To stress how much her mother cares about the environment.

    D. Because her mother asks her to be kind to nature on Mother’s Day.

    9. Which of the following is NOT related to Mom's ''green life''?

    A. Picking dandelions on busy streets. B. Rescuing a beetle from some danger.

    C. Setting a caught spider free in the garden. D. Saving glass jars and empty cheese containers.

    10. We can infer from the article that ________.

    A. the author's mother is very impatient with her children

    B. The author's mother knows how to live in harmony with nature

    C. the author's mother knows how to keep the wildlife off her yard

    D. the author's mother used to lecture her to protect the environment

    11. The change order of the writer's attitude towards her mom's behavior should be ________.

    A. doubtful—critical—positive B. approving—doubtful—negative

    C. understanding—critical—approving D. negative—understanding—approving

    D

Every week in China, millions of people will sit in front of their TVs watching teenagers compete for the title Character Hero, which is a Chinese-style spelling bee. In this challenge, young competitors must write Chinese characters by hand. To prepare for the competition, the competitors usually spend months studying dictionaries.

Perhaps the show’s popularity should not be a surprise. Along with gunpowder and paper, many Chinese people consider the creation of Chinese calligraphy(书法) to be one of their primary contributions to civilization. Unfortunately, all over the country, Chinese people are forgetting how to write their own language without computerized help. Software on smart phones and computers allows users to type in the basic sound of the word using the Latin alphabet. The correct character is chosen from a list. The result? It’s possible to recognize characters without remembering how to write them.

But there’s still hope for the paint brush. China’s Education Ministry wants children to spend more time learning how to write.

In one Beijing primary school we visited, students practice calligraphy every day inside a specially decorated classroom with traditional Chinese paintings hanging on the walls. Soft music plays as a group of six-year-olds dip brush pens into black ink. They look up at the blackboard often to study their teacher’s examples before carefully attempting to reproduce those characters on thin rice paper. “If adults can survive without using handwriting, why bother to teach it now?” we ask the calligraphy teacher, Shen Bin. “The ability to write characters is part of Chinese tradition and culture,” she reasons. “Students must learn now so they don’t forget when they grow up.” says the teacher.

    12. What can we learn about the Character Hero?

    A. It’s open to people of all ages and all walks.

    B. It’s the most-viewed TV programs in China.

    C. It aims to spread Chinese culture to the world.

    D. It draws great public attention across the country.

    13. Why are Chinese people forgetting how to write the characters?

    A. Chinese people don’t refer to dictionaries very often.

    B. Chinese people no longer use brush pens or practice calligraphy.

    C. Chinese people are using the Latin alphabet instead of the characters.

    D. Chinese people needn’t write by hand as often with the help of technology.

    14. .According to Shen Bin, being able to write characters by hand is_________.

    A. necessary for adults to survive in China

B a requirement made by the Education Ministry

    C. helpful to keep Chinese tradition and culture alive

    D. an ability to be developed only when you are students

    15. Where does this text probably come from?

    A. A news report. B. A science report.

    C. An advertisement. D. Children’s literature.
