[2023·福建省高三联合测评]Officer Jonathan Smith, 30, was called to Bond Lake near Lewiston, New York, after receiving reports of a little dog that had fallen in about 50 yards from the shore. In this heartinmouth footage (镜头) captured by a fellow officer's bodycam (人体摄像头), the brave police officer threw off some equipment before dashing out onto the ice without any caution for his own safety.

The owner had been walking the 10monthold dog around the lake on January 5 when Kona spotted a distant flock of geese landing on the water and ran towards them. Horrified, Kona's owner watched as the dog fell into the freezing water at the edge of the ice.

In an email to Lewiston Police Department the owner wrote: “Although she is a strong swimmer, there was zero chance of her getting back out onto the ice and she began to panic and tire quickly.”

The witness nearby called 911 right away, and 15 minutes later officer Smith and two other officers from the Police Department arrived. Without hesitation or rescue equipment the officer removed his uniform and gun belt and ran over the ice towards the exhausted Kona. When he got close enough to her, officer Smith grabbed the dog and pulled her from the water so she was able to run back over the ice to her owner.

“Kona and I and everybody that loves her are extremely grateful for his selflessness and courage” the owner wrote. “His professionalism and bravery should be applauded. I have witnessed countless acts of selfless heroism. Officer Jon Smith's actions rank high in my book.” The owner was an author, who has written many books.

    [2023·贵州省黔东南州高三一模考试]

Researchers from London's Queen Mary University studied how participants were affected by pollution based on where they live. In the journal Circulation on Friday, the scientists revealed that air pollution can harm the heart to the point where it resembles (类似) the early stages of heart failure.

According to Emory Healthcare, deaths have decreased around 12 percent per decade on average over the past 50 years, but 287000 people die from heart failure each year. There are more hospitalizations from heart failure each year than all cancers combined.

In this study, the scientists examined information from 4000 participants that were in the UK Biobank study. Volunteers had blood tests, health scans and heart MRIs, which measured the function, size and weight of their hearts. They also recorded their lifestyle, health record and where they've lived.

The team found participants had larger right and left ventricles (心室) in the heart when they lived closer to busy roads and were exposed to nitrogen dioxide (NO2), which enters the air when fuel is burned. The right and left ventricles are crucial for pumping blood. They were healthy but resembled the ventricles in earlystage heart failure. The scientists found that the higher the exposure to the pollutants, the greater the changes in the heart.

“Air pollution should be seen as a modifiable risk factor” Dr. Nay Aung, who led the data analysis of the study, said in a statement from Queen Mary University. “The public all need to be aware of their exposure when they think about their heart health, just like they think about their blood pressure and their weight.”

Professor Jeremy Pearson, Associate Medical Director at the British Heart Foundation said in the statement from Queen Mary University, “We can't expect people to move home to avoid air pollution, so government and public bodies must act right now to make all areas safe and protect the population from these harm.”

8What is the finding of the study?

AAir pollution causes many people to die.

BPeople have big problems of heart health.

CPeople's houses have a great effect on the heart.

DAir pollution makes our hearts at risk of heart failure.

9What does Paragraph 2 mainly tell us about heart failure?

AIt can be cured easily.              BIt remains a serious threat.

CIt's the most common illness.        DIt causes people to suffer cancers.

10What did the team find on the participants exposed to air pollution?

    AThey had many health problems.

    BTheir ventricles worked better.

CTheir hearts were out of danger.

DThe size of their hearts was bigger.

11Which of the following is Dr. Nay Aung's suggestion?

AMoving to safer areas.             BLiving far away from crowds.

CTaking notice of air pollution.       DTaking blood pressure regularly.

[2023·石家庄市教学质量检测]Icecoated vines (葡萄藤) stretched across hillsides around Chablis, France, as the region woke Monday to the temperature of 5 ℃. Fruit growers are worried that the frost will kill off large numbers of early buds (花蕾) and disturb the whole growing season.

The frost is particularly disturbing after a similar phenomenon hit French vineyards last year, leading to some 2 billion euros in losses. Scientists later found that the damaging 2021 frost was made more likely by climate change.

Some growers tried to warm the vines with electrical lines, or set up special watering systems, or sprayed () the buds with water to protect them from frost. The water creates a thin layer of ice that ensures the buds' temperature remains around freezing point but does not drop much lower.

Daniel Defaix, whose vineyard has been producing wine for 400 years and lived through many climate disasters, calls what's happening now “a very, very serious frost.” He placed candles on the soil to protect about five hectares of his most valuable grapes, but had to leave the remaining 25 hectares to face the forces of nature. At a cost of 10 euros per candle, and 600 candles per hectare, it was too costly to save the rest of the grapes.

The 2021 April frost led to what French government officials described as “probably the greatest agricultural disaster of the beginning of the 21st century.” The pattern was similar: an intense April 68 frost after a lengthy warm period in March.

The researchers concluded that the warming caused by humans had coaxed the plants so that they exposed their young leaves earlier than usual, before a burst of Arctic cold reached Europe in April.

12What did Daniel Defaix do to protect his vines?

AHeat the vines with electrical lines.      BSpray the buds with water.

CSet up special watering systems.        DWarm the vines with candles.

13What can we infer from the text?

AGrowers can save most of their crops.    BThe 2022 frost is the worst in history.

CHumans are to blame for the damage.    DThe weather last March was normal.

14What does the underlined word “coaxed” in the last paragraph mean?

    AProtected.     BDried.            CTricked.     DDelayed.

15Which is the best title of the text?

ACauses of Early Budding              BLate Frost Threatens Vine Crops

    Ⅳ.读后续写

On July 8, 2017, eight members of a family in total, were enjoying an evening together at the beach in Panhandle, Florida. As the sun sank lower on the horizon, the two boys Noah, 11, and Stephen, 8  swam into the waves without the grown-ups noticing. Soon they realized that the ocean had pulled them into the sea. After trying and failing to swim back, they started waving and screaming for help. But the lifeguards had been off duty for the evening.

The boys had been struggling for several minutes when Jacky and Tabatha, a couple from Georgia, heard them. They dived into the water and soon reached the two brothers. But after a few minutes, they were all trapped in a rip current (离岸流)  a powerful one that could sweep even the strongest swimmer out to sea! By then, some teenagers had heard the cry. One of the teens rushed into the water, grabbed Jacky, and pulled him back to shore. Meanwhile, Tabatha could feel herself being pulled farther out. She was already exhausted and beginning to feel desperate as she was trying to save both boys alone.

Onshore, Jacky was terrified. A man stopped. “What’s wrong?” asked Shaun, who was heading back to his car. “My wife is drowning!” Brittany said. Shaun immediately strode (大步跨) into the water. But several minutes later, a gaping 15 feet still lay between him and Tabatha and the boys. He knew that if he continued, he’d become another victim. He turned around to seek help.

It was about that time that Roberta, the boys’ mother, returned from the bathroom and looked around for her children. She was shocked to spot them floating much farther out than they were allowed to go. She fought the waves to get to her screaming sons and the stranger who was trying to save them, but she quickly discovered it was nearly impossible to make headway in any direction. Looking around, Roberta sighed with relief to see some more people coming to help.

    Paragraph 1:

When they tried in vain to rescue the brothers and Tabatha, a risky idea came to them. ___
