Picnic Shelter Reservations

Vancouver Parks and Recreation maintains four covered picnic shelters that are available for reservation at the following parks:

A man in North Dakota was greeted by a surprise when he left his truck parked under a walnut (核桃) tree. It seemed like a hard-working squirrel had shed blood, sweat and tears to collect all the walnuts.

The salesman, 56, said that on returning from a four-day trip in early September he opened the hood (引擎盖) of his truck, only to find lots of walnuts stored inside.

Since 2013, the red squirrel has been hiding walnuts in his truck every two years when his neighbor’s tree produces walnuts. Fischer said this year’s walnut collection is the most the squirrel has ever filled in the hood of his truck — around 42 gallons of walnuts.

Every walnut season, once the tree is bare, he empties the hood of his truck and gives the walnuts away. “The squirrel will sit in the tree and watch me clean up his winter storage almost like: ‘That’s mine, buddy,’ ” Fischer said.

Fischer also said the squirrel has ignored his other vehicles. “I’ve got other vehicles that sit very close to that tree, and it’s always my truck.” he said. “I’ve even parked purposely out on the street — as far away as I can from the walnut tree — but it still finds my truck and hides them in there.”

“It’s very possible that this funny squirrel considers Bill Fischer’s truck to be part of its home,” Aliperti said, who led a study that found that ground squirrels’ personalities are tied to risk-taking. Aliperti added that the hood of a truck is a perfect hiding place to a squirrel because it’s concealed and dry. Since the squirrel taking over Fischer’s truck appears to be a repeat offender, Aliperti said this one might be particularly brave.

The African penguin lives on St. Croix island off the east coast of South Africa. A new study has found that African penguins are leaving their natural environment to escape noisy ship refueling activities.

The island once held the world’s largest reproducing (繁殖) population of the animals. But the population has dropped sharply since South Africa started permitting ships in the area to refuel at sea six years ago, the study found.

Lorien Pichegru, acting director of the Coastal and Marine Research Institute at Nelson Mandela University, which led the study, said the organization had found that noise levels in the area had doubled since the refueling activities began. Scientists say high noise levels affect the ability of ocean animals to find and catch other animals for food. Noise also makes it more difficult for the animals to communicate with each other and map travel paths. “This year we are at 1,200 breeding pairs at St Croix from 8,500 pairs in 2016,” Pichegru said.

The study recently appeared in the publication Science of the Total Environment. The researchers said the study is the first to explore the effects of ocean traffic noise pollution on a seabird.

Nelson Mandela University’s study collected data from ship identification tools to estimate underwater noise from passing ships. Oil-covered penguins were found in 2019 in Algoa Bay after an oil spill (泄露) from ship-to-ship refueling. Environmental groups have called for the activities to be stopped in the bay.

Pichegru said penguins in the area were already struggling to survive because of a series of issues, including industrial fishing activities. She added that the refueling activities did not kill all the penguins. However, “It was just the thing that made the whole ecology tip over and then the penguins couldn’t deal with that,” she said.

“Our mission is to develop the best education in the world and make it universally available. Now there are more people actively learning a language through DuoLingo than in the entire US public school system.” says Luis von Ahn, founder of the free language learning app. Since its coming out in 2012, more than 30 million people have downloaded the app, which was fun and attracted many language learners.

The growth of technology for educational use has changed the way in which people learn and receive education. This is particularly true for languages, an area in which the explosion of mobile apps and interactive software has provided choices to a range of people who were previously unable to receive foreign language education.

Von Ahn says that free use of languages was something he had a personal interest in addressing: he grew up in Guatemala, where he was surrounded by people all trying to learn English, half of whom were failing to do so and a lot of whom could not afford it.

One of the big changes caused by tech is the change in language learners. Languages have long been connected with the rich people, but now people from less rich backgrounds are finding affordable ways to learn.

Von Ahn says an unexpected result of DuoLingo being an app is that it’s attracting an unlikely type of user. DuoLingo was designed to be like a game, and what the company has found is that many users aren’t even necessarily die-hard language fans, they’re just looking for an educational way to kill some time.

“They’re still procrastinating from something else, but at least it’s somewhat useful.” says Von Ahn, “The truth of the matter is that learning a language takes months or years. We have to find a way to keep them interested and that’s where the gamification came in.”

Ernest Hemingway famously said that writers should “write hard and clear about what hurts”. Although Hemingway may not have known it at the time, research has now shown that writing about “what hurts” can help improve our psychological (心理的) health.

Expressive writing is often used in therapeutic( 治 疗 ) settings where people are asked to write about their thoughts and feelings related to a stressful life event. Reflective writing is regularly used in professional settings, often as a way to help nurses, doctors, teachers, psychologists and social workers become better at their jobs.
