Beautiful Glowing Beaches Around the World

If you need a reminder that nature is awesome, here are some beaches around the world that naturally glow . Time to add these to your travel list!

    Gippsland Lakes, Australia

During the day, the Gippsland Lakes are like any other: you can swim, water ski, or sail. But at night, the landscape begins to glow due to bioluminescent algae (生物发光的藻类). In 2006, massive rainstorms caused large amounts of algae to enter into the lakes. It glows whenever the water is disturbed, but it has slowly faded with time, which is welcome news for the lakes’ ecosystem.

    The Maldives

This glowing beach in the Maldives is just one of the attractive features of the nation. The sand on this beach glows in the dark because of sea shrimp (海虾). These tiny organisms give out blue light for up to a minute, lighting up your path as you walk across the beach.

    Halong Bay, Vietnam

Halong Bay is one of Vietnam’s most popular tourist destinations, but it’s not just because of its famous islands covered in green rainforests. At night, boat tours take people out on the water to see the blue-green light from the algae.

    Dongying, China

The dreamlike sea in Dongying gives us a strong desire to travel unlike any other travel destination. The glow-in-the-dark algae is found mostly on the rock formations along the shoreline, which gives them a blue-green glow. Plus, it acts as a natural warning light if you’re swimming at night.

21What can be inferred about the Gippsland Lakes?

AThey may stop glowing over time. BThey are lit by algae during the day.

CThey are frequently hit by rainstorms. DThey tend to be dangerous for swimmers.

22In what way is the beach in the Maldives different from the others?

AIt isn’t a popular tourist destination. BIt is surrounded by rainforests.

CIts light source isn’t algae. DIts glow can last for a long time.

23Where can you see glowing rocks?

AAt the Gippsland Lakes. BAt Halong Bay.

COn the beach in the Maldives. DIn Dongying.

    B

My mother always told me, “You should explore your own country before stepping out into the world. ”However, it seems like a tough mission to travel all across its expansive surfaces. But luckily for me, Via Rail Canada offered youths between the ages of 18 and 25 the chance to ride the train across Canada for the month of July. The ticket was a bargain $150. My best friends Trevor, Joel and Jeremy and I immediately jumped at the opportunity and secured four tickets on the great Canadian railroad.

For a group of 20-year-olds, this was like the first flight of young birds from the nest. When we approached the train station in the morning, our 22-day adventure from Sudbury to Vancouver was to begin. Eyes baggy from lack of sleep, we jumped on board as if it was the train to Hogwarts in Harry Potter. Although the thought of three full days on those tracks covering close to 3, 000 kilometres crushed our spirits a little, what happened next caught us by surprise.

The three days on board turned into a summer camp on rails. At night, we would climb up the glass-domed train car, which gave us a scenic view of the starry night sky, untouched by the harmful light pollution. Before we knew it, the warm sun rays beating down on our faces woke us up for another day on the rails. To my surprise, a sea of golden grain fields dominated the landscape we were in the Canadian Prairies.

Another day slipped away and we set up for another night in the dome. And this time we were greeted by night sky painted by a fantastic thunderstorm. Lightning was striking at an incredible rate. The spectacular and memorable light show left everyone in the glass bubble in complete disbelief.

Arriving in the Rocky Mountains was one of the most surreal experiences of my life. Before the train adventure, if I could have skipped the travel and arrived at the destination, I would have. That is no longer true. I’ve learned that the journey can be more enjoyable than the destination.

24What has made the author’s train adventure across Canada a reality?

AThe encouragement given by his mother. BThe appeal of the scenic views in the country.

CThe discount ticket offered by Via Rail Canada. DHis great courage to challenge a tough mission.

25What can we infer about the young people from Paragraph 2 ?

AThey were excited about the coming train journey.

BThey left their parents for the first time in their life.

CThey never thought of having a train adventure.

DThey were hooked by the magic story of Harry Potter.

26What does“the glass bubble”in the fourth paragraph refer to?

AA brain in lack of imagination. BThe glass-domed train car.

CA summer camp on the train. DThe sightseeing bus.

27What did the author learn from the train adventure across Canada?

AOpportunities are hard to get. BEnjoying a journey counts a lot.

CSplendid scenery attracts young people. DThe traveling experience is not real to him.

    C

Is my article mid or valid? If you can answer this question, you already are accustomed to what we term “algospeak.” As more and more online users join social media platforms such as TikTok (抖音), algospeak continues to grow. But what is it, what do these words mean?

Algospeak is a coded language or slang used online. For some communities it is the only way to talk safely about sensitive subjects. Due to the rise of algorithmic censorship (算法筛查) in media, algospeak developed as a way to prevent robot from deleting their videos and messages. Users had to get creative to avoid deletion. This means that as long as there is censorship, there will be a new language to avoid it.

Further, new slang created on social media platforms fits itself into everyday life. Even if you are not writing a message on TikTok, you may have caught yourself using phrases from the app in your daily life. This connection between people all over the globe allows for shared vocabulary. It also has the potential to completely change the way we as English speakers speak. Here is some new slang popularized by TikTok.

Bussin’ (adj. ) — something is really good, usually referring to food

Mid (adj. ) — ordinary, not good or bad

Sheesh (ex. ) — response either meaning disbelief or surprise, can be positive or negative

Valid (adj. ) — something very good or meets a very high standard; a respectable opinion

No one would have suspected artificial intelligence (AI) would be the catalyst (催化剂) for change but it is. The combination of not only censorship but also high connectivity birthed a new language. Some older generations can’t even understand what the youngest generation says because of the lack of exposure to the new language. The gap between English before social media and English as it is now is giant, and it continues to grow.

So, what should we expect for the future? Will censorship loosen or will the English language continue to evolve from digital media? Time can only tell.

28What contributed to the emergence of algospeak?

AThe need for netizens to escape censorship.

BThe desire for a shared vocabulary around the world.

CThe authority’s demand for creating a new language.

DThe social media’s intention to catch public attention.

29What can we learn from the last two paragraphs?

    AAI needs catalyst to develop.

BSocial media birthed a new language.

    CAlgospeak may cause communication obstacles.

DStrict censorship is a barrier to interpersonal relationships.

30What is the author’s attitude towards the future of algospeak?

    AExpectant.

    BIntolerant.

    CSkeptical.

    DUnclear.

31What can we infer about algospeak?

AIt offers a new outlook on life.

BIts evolution is associated with AI.

CIt has reshaped the digital media.

DIt has won popularity among all ages.

    D

For the first time, scientists have measured what actually happens with face-to-face interactions when employees start to work at an open-plan office, and their results show these modern workspaces are not as cooperative as you’d think.

Two researchers from Harvard Business School and Harvard University wanted to test whether removing walls at a real-world workplace really increases interactions between co-workers. “To our knowledge, no prior study has directly measured the effect on actual interaction that results from removing walls to create an open office environment,” Ethan S. Bernstein and Stephen Turban write in the paper. To that end, they approached two multinational companies that were re-organizing their office spaces at the global headquarters, and enlisted small groups of employees for two studies.

For eight weeks before the office redesign and eight weeks afterward, the researchers tracked employees’ social interactions and locations. This data was analyzed together with email and instant messaging information from the company’s servers to measure differences in how people were communicating with each other.

What they found was a pretty astonishing difference in face-to-face interactions — but not in the direction you might think. Across both experiments, employees’ social interactions in person decreased by a crazy 70 percent, while emails saw an uptick by roughly 20 to 50 percent.

So, instead of spending more time cooperating with co-workers in the new space where everyone could see them, people got their heads down and tried to preserve their privacy any way they could. According to these results, it appears that being forced into a more open-plan environment can make people switch from chatting to others in person to sending an email or using instant messaging instead.

As the team notes, it’s not automatically a bad thing, but it can certainly change work dynamics in an unexpected way. “That can have important consequences for how — and how productively — work gets done,” the researchers conclude.

32How did the two multinational companies redesign their offices?

ABy expanding the total floor areas.

    BBy updating the computer servers.

    CBy changing the employees’ locations.

DBy tearing down the space boundaries.

33Why did the employees prefer email or instant messaging in an open office space?

ATo reduce the risk of privacy leaks.

    BTo establish efficient communication.

    CTo facilitate indirect social interaction.

    DTo transform traditional work patterns.

34What can be inferred from the researchers’ saying in the last paragraph?

    AFurther relevant research needs conducting.

BTheir research findings are of practical value.

CTheir team intends to change working environment.

DPeople hold different opinions on how work gets done.

35What is the main idea of the text?

    AReal-world workplaces increase employees’ interaction.

BWork dynamics don’t have much effect on work efficiency.

CModern workspaces change workers’ way of communication.

    DOpen-plan offices can’t promote cooperation between co-workers.

    第二节 (共5小题;每小题2.5分,满分12.5分)

    根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。

Science fiction television has done a lot to shape how we view the meals of the future, from an evening dinner in pill form to machines giving us any meal we desire, on demand. ____36____ However, while these ideas for food creation are more than fifty years old, the way we produce and consume food has not changed very much. Even though there is enough food available today to feed the world, more than 870 million people do not have enough to eat. ____37____

With the global population expected to grow to more than nine billion by 2050, demand for food will only increase. No pills or machines have solved our food problems yet.

However, agricultural science has been responsible for saving huge numbers of lives. Science and technology helped us out of starvation during the 1960s and 70s when the world’s population exploded. ____38____ The result of this panic was the “green revolution”, which saw the introduction to farming of high production grains, improved irrigation systems and hybrid seeds, saving over one billion people from starvation

____39____ Having enough food is only the first step. There are complications with natural disasters, conflict, poverty and environmental problems. All these can mean that the food supply is put at risk ____40____ Many people are concerned about “playing around with nature”, adjusting how food looks and tastes and smells, and other human interferences(干预), all of which are widespread.

Anyhow, the world has not been completely saved from starvation, but we are on the way to get there.

AAgricultural science was quite a success.

BThere are many complexities when dealing with food.

CModern science and technology of food contributes a lot.

DNobody would ever starve if food were this easy to obtain.

EAnd it is unbelievable that hunger kills more people than disease does.

FThen there are the issues we face when it comes to food experimentation.

GAt that time scientists were genuinely worried that we would run out of food.

    阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

When I left the office for a news assignment that early summer evening, I had absolutely no idea what life held in store for me.

As a young photographer, I was on my way back from a photo shoot. I had shot rolls of films featuring beautiful scenery and scenes of daily life in the countryside. What a fulfilling day! Now what 1 needed was a hot bath and a good rest. 1 couldn’t wait to return home. On the country road, with my camera bag containing my equipment and a phonebook on my back, I rode my motorbike so merrily that all the tiredness disappeared instantly. Suddenly, a big rock hit me from nowhere. All I knew was 1 was no longer on my motorbike.

I was thrown away from my bike and hit the road. Before I lost consciousness, I saw all my things scattered (分散的), my helmet (头盔) lying at a distance. Hours, maybe days later, I opened my eyes. 1 realized I was on a hospital bed and later learnt that I had been shifted to the ward after7 days in the ICU. The crash was so severe that my head had been injured seriously, leading to other terrible conditions. Although I survived, there were a series of surgeries needed before I could fully recover—a reconstruction of the knees, my broken right wrist to be fixed and an operation on my nose.

I had no relatives in Delhi as I lived alone. After my accident, some warm-hearted strangers donated blood and resources to help me survive, which made me really touched. But every time I tried to piece together that horrible Tuesday, I felt like there remained some missing puzzles. Who discovered and saved me? How was I sent to the hospital? Where can I find my hero? Such questions bothered me until one day Amy, who was the first to learn of my accident came to see me when visits were allowed.

    注意:

    1.续写词数应为150左右:

    2. 请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
