Do you know paint-by-numbers (用数字标明填色区域的绘画方式)? No? Your parents and grandparents may know it because it's not something new.

In a paint-by-numbers picture, you can see a painting divided (分开) into different parts with different numbers. Each of those numbers is for a colour. For example, when you paint, you just colour the parts with the number “1” in black and the parts with the number “2” in white. This makes it easy for people to paint.

Dan Robbins is the father of paint-by-numbers pictures. He once worked for a paint company. One day in 1949, Dan's boss asked him to sell more paintings. Then Dan had the idea of paint-by-numbers. He knew that the famous artist Leonardo da Vinci used to divide paintings into different parts and number them. And he asked his students to colour those parts. Dan wanted to create pictures to let people paint in the same way. So he told the idea to his boss. And his boss asked him to create such pictures.

Dan created six different kinds of paint-by-numbers pictures. At first, they didn't sell well. In 1951, the company taught customers (顾客) how to colour a large paint-by-numbers picture in a shopping centre in New York. After that, paint-by-numbers became very popular. A paint-by- numbers picture sold for $2. 50. In 1955, people spent $20 million on the company's paint-by- numbers pictures.

Some people say that the paint-by-numbers pictures are not real art. But Dan only wanted everyone to enjoy art in an easy and happy way.

    D. It showed people how to colour a big picture.

There's much to see under the sea, but you need to remember that light behaves differently in water than in air. The objects appear closer to you than they exactly are. You might find yourself reaching out to touch something and completely missing it.

Objects under water will appear larger than they would on the surface, too. Be careful not to tell any stories about the big fish that got away. That fish might not be so big after all! It's just because sometimes things can seem to be as much as about 33 percent bigger in water!

What's more, in deeper water, colors just don't seem as bright. In fact, it looks as if some colors are missing. Remember the color of an object results from the wavelengths (波长) of light that are reflected (反射) from its surface. And light is taken in as it moves down through the water.

Swimmers wear wet suits to keep warm underwater. Let's take a bright red, yellow, and blue wet suit as an example. These colors are hard to miss on the surface of water. Watch carefully the changes in color as you descend in the water. The red part now looks almost black because the red light wavelengths, the longest among these three colors, are missing. As you go down deeper, the same thing will happen to the yellow part and in the end to the blue part. Even at a place of about 6 to 9 metres underwater, you will look terrible, like a ghost (鬼怪)! And you have to wait for your return to the surface to enjoy the bright colors again!

(    ) 21. You miss the object underwater when you want to touch it because ________.

    A. it is not as close as it seems B. it disappears very quickly

    C. your eyesight is quite poor D. you are not quick enough

(    ) 22. The example of the wet suit is used to explain the change of ___ of an object underwater.

    A. the position B. the weight C. the size D. the color

(    ) 23. The underlined word descend probably means ________ in Chinese in this passage.

    A. 屏息 B. 下潜 C. 漂浮 D. 上升

(    ) 24. Which of the following is true?

    A. The wavelengths of red light are longer than those of blue light.

    B. You will see a ghost if you go as deep as 6 to 9 metres into the sea.

    C. Much water will be taken in by the swimmer deep in the water.

    D. A four-metre-long fish looks three metres long underwater.

(    ) 25. The best title of this passage is ________.

    A. The Brightness of Color Underwater B. The Behavior of Light Underwater

    C. The Standard of Color Underwater D. The Direction of Light Underwater
