Plants are rooted(扎根)in one place. They can't run away from danger or walk over the sunny side of the garden. So they have to develop some special ways to protect themselves and grow in the nature.
Some scientists found that plants can sense their surroundings(环境).
You've all seen plants grow towards light which is called phototropism. Even if the top of them are cut off the plants don't change the direction. They sense the light and tell the rest of the plants how to grow then.
Some plants "talk” with each other by using "airmail" to warn each other of danger. Researchers in England cut the leaves of cabbages. The cabbages then produce a tiny number of chemicals(化学物质)that protect themselves from some insects. Strangely, the cabbages which aren't cut nearby also begin to give off their own different chemicals. That means they seem to receive a warning from their cabbage neighbors.
Most amazingly, plants have a great system of communication that can connect nearly every plant in a forest by fungi(真菌). It connects the roots of different plants to each other. Scientists call the system the “wood wide web”,similar to the Internet we use. Using the network, plants can communicate and share information and even food with each other.
Whatever the case, plants are stranger and more wonderful than we can imagine.

Imagine you need to send an important document (文件) far away as soon as possible. How would you do it? Chances are that you would use email or a smartphone app. However, for many people, the answer to that question is the fax machine.
The first fax machine was invented in 1843 by Alexander Bain. Then in 1964, modem fax machines became widely available. In the1980s and 1990s, they were considered the fastest and safest way to send information.
With the development of technology, you might think email would have made the fax machine a thing of the past, but you’d be wrong. The number of faxes sent each year is only growing. One explanation is that fax machines are still easier to use for documents that are written by hand. But the real reason for their continued use has to do with security.
Email is convenient, but it can be hacked (非法入侵).This is a danger for governments, hospitals, and other organizations that deal with sensitive data (数据). Using a fax machine allows information to go directly from one place to another without needing to be saved on a computer. It can then be kept in a physical location where it’s more difficult to steal.
Fax machine technology grew quickly throughout the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, and it continues to develop today. Long live the fax machine!

Have you found that it’s hard to take your eyes off your phone? Do you feel left-out not being invited to a party? Do you think that others are having more fun, and living better lives than you? If the answer to any of these questions is “yes,” you may be suffering from (遭受) the Fear Of Missing Out, or “FOMO”. But, don’t worry, FOMO influences many people in the modem world. You are not alone.
FOMO has become a common social situation in recent years. The growth of mobile technology and social media is where FOMO comes in. New mobile technologies help us connect with anyone at all times. However, it is a double-edged sword (双刃剑). Today, most of social media are filled with photos and updates which only show the best parts of others’ lives. That can leave us feeling that our own lives are imperfect.
So, what can we do to fight against FOMO? One idea is to cut down the time you spend on social media. Setting time limits (时限) for how long you read through or use social media each day will be helpful. Also, it’s a good way to just focus on what you have but not what you don’t. What’s more, keep a so-called gratitude journal (感恩日志), where you write down three things you are grateful for every day. With these tips, FOMO can be beaten, and you will be able to have a more enjoyable life.

She stepped into the house with her mouth wide open. Reading his mom’s thought, the son volunteered, “I know what you are thinking, but I promise that I bought this big house two years ago and have lived here since then. You can live with me for a month.”
A month passed, the mom came back home. Several days later she received an email from her son which read,
    Dear mom,

    Dear son,

Chicken eggs are just thin shells (壳) made of mineral (矿物), but you may be surprised how strong they are.
    What you need
*Four eggs *A bowl *A pen
*Scissors or a knife *A piece of paper * Some books
    What to do

① Use the scissors or knife to break a hole in the small end of each egg. Empty out what’s inside into the bowl. Wash and dry the shells.

②Draw a fine line around the widest part of each egg. Break away the shell between the line and the hole slowly.

③ Put shells in a square at the four corners of the piece of paper, with the round end of the egg on top.

④Place books gently onto the four egg shells one after another, and see how many books you can add before the egg shells break down!
    What happened
The strength of an eggshell lies in its shape. It’s like a 3D arch (拱形) or dome, which is one of the strongest shapes. The shape of the eggshell spreads pressure all over the whole egg, rather than at one point. In fact, the shape of the eggshell is seen in many types of architecture, including doorways and large windows. The strong walls of the shell will support the weak point. At right conditions, the thin eggshell can even hold up 20kg of weight!

There you are, looking through your Qzone or Weibo, and you come across sayings like “nbcs”,“zqsg” or “paw”. But what do they mean?
These are examples of internet slang(俚语) terms that have become popular among China’s post-00 generation(时代). According to People’s Daily, these internet slang terms mainly come from two ways: the acronyms(首字母缩写) of pinyin or English and a set of emojis(表情).
For example, “nsdd” is made up of the first letters from pinyin “Ni shi dui de” which means “you are right” and “brb” means “Be right back”. A group or emojis of “sun”, “soccer” and “tea” may tell people that a person played soccer and drank tea in the daytime.
Li Junzhang, a 16-year-old student, loves using internet slang terms. She chooses to express herself using these symbols rather than words when communicating online. She believes, “We like to talk in a convenient way. And parents have no idea what we are talking about. Using the new terms creates a feeling of being ourselves and gives us a sense of belonging to a certain generation.”
“Of course, we encourage people to express themselves in different ways,” a language expert said. “but we also fear that the use of internet slang terms will lead to more mistakes in using Chinese characters.”
56 According to the passage, we can usually see slang terms like “nsdd” or “brb” from ________.
    A. magazines B. novels C. online language D. newspaper
    57. We can infer (推断) the slang term “PAW” means ________.

    C. D.

    A. bring convenience in communication B. help to hide secrets from parents
    C. encourage using Chinese characters D. cause problems in language using
    60. It can be inferred from the passage ________.
    A. young people like using slang terms when talking face to face
    B. slang terms will take the place of traditional Chinese language

A big sandstorm hit northern China on March 15, 2021. It covered many cities with thick clouds of yellow dust (尘土).
The storm, which came from Mongolia (蒙古国), was the largest sandstorm to hit China in the past 10 years. Many flights and classes were canceled because the visibility (能见度) was lower than 500 meters.
The storm was the result of warm and dry weather in the area, together with the strong winds from Mongolia. “There has been little rainfall so far this spring and the temperature is rising. So now is a worrying time for sandstorms,” said an expert from Beijing.

In recent years, sandstorms haven’t been as common in northern China as before. The land with desertification (荒漠化) has been falling by 7,585 km2 per year in China, and the area of sandy land has been decreasing by 1,284 km2 a year. This is thanks to China’s Three-North Shelter Forest Program (TNSFP, 三北防护林工程) which started in the 1970s. Millions of trees have been planted in northern China to prevent sandstorms and protect the environment.
Besides, China has a color-graded warming system for sandstorms (as shown in the picture), with red meaning the most serious, followed by orange, yellow, blue and green. Therefore, people would have time to get prepared for the sandstorm.

    63. The underlined word “decreasing” in Paragraph 4 means ________.

    64. If the visibility in your city is 400m, a(n) ________ warning will be given out.
