    1. (2023年全国高三专题练习)
    阅读下面短文,根据所给情节进行续写,使之构成一个完整的故事。
I needed to do something in my community (社区) in order to complete the community service hours required to graduate from high school. Some of my friends had signed up to spend time at a soup kitchen, so I did, too. It seemed like a good thing to do.
I thought that we would just be passing out dinners to those in need, but I found out we would be doing everything from preparing to serving the dinner. We began preparing the food, from mixing salad dressing to separating frozen meat. Much still needed to be done before dinner was served, but already outside the building many homeless people were gathering. It wasn’t until a couple of hours later that we opened the doors and began serving dinner.
As the line of people came toward me, I got a little scared. I’d come face to face with the homeless: How should I act? How would they treat me? Would they hate me for having more than they did? While some of the people looked very friendly, some of them looked so dangerous. I didn’t have too much time to worry about it. I was assigned (分配) to serve the salad with the lady next to me. She smiled at me and said if I needed help, she’d be right there, which I found quite comforting.
I had never seen so many people wanting food. They were of all ages and nationalities. Most of them wore clothes that were torn and dirty. Some looked like they had tally given up on life, while others seemed to be making the best of the situation, smiling and joking. Some were better off than others, but they all needed a good meal and a warm place to eat. It saddened me to think of how many people there were who didn’t have a place to call home and the only food they got came from a soup kitchen.

    Paragraph 2:
I was so happy that I had earned my service hours in this way.
    ________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
    【答案】
As they came in my direction, I put on my brightest and happiest smile. I wanted to make them know that I was really anxious to help them. To my relief, they smiled politely back at me when they saw my smile, and I could see their exhaustion in their eyes. I wanted to know what they were going through and I was desperate to know what I could do for them. They nodded gratefully as I pushed my spoon into the pot and took a large spoonful and poured it into their bowls.
I was so happy that I had earned my service hours in this way. This experience made me realize that there are so many people in this world who need our help. It also made me realize that our small act of kindness can make them feel warm and make a great difference to them. I will never forget the way they looked at me when they were given food. I am anxious to urge the world to do everything possible to help those in need.

    阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
Living in a competitive and dishonest community was not always easy. People kept walking in and out, wearing artificial smiles. All selfish souls! Finally, my parents decided to have a breath of fresh air. We were on vacation, having driven to New Hampshire. We wouldn’t see friends on family—it would be just me, my parents, and my little brother, Wyatt, out for a nice, socially distanced week away.
We had hiked about half a mile to a popular spot called Dianna’s Baths, where the water falls of a series of flat stones on the mountainside. The baths were full of families, so we made our way to one of the upper levels of rock to keep our distance.
Both where we sat and down below, the waler poured and fell into small pools, where kids in swimsuits were splashing around. We couldn’t help rushing to join them. Some parents nervously drove their kids away from the rocks’ edges, while my parents were grateful that they were out of that stage, so we two, at sixteen and eight, could keep our physical space with more confidence. Don’t get me wrong: Mom was sill terrified as she saw us jump between the slippery rocks, “No running,” she said again and again. “Stay away from all those edges.”
But she soon relaxed, and we were all having fun, splashing in the pools. Then, seconds later, things changed.
I turned and saw my Wyatt sitting down between two stones in a fast-moving stream. I yelled at him to get out. He yelled back something that I couldn’t hear, and then he disappeared over the edge.
it was about 12 feet from the top of the waterfall to the pool below, where there were many huge rocks. All I remember from the moment is mother’s screaming, over and over, like a prayer, “Somebody helps my son!” My father was already dashing down the rocks, when I heard another woman scream. “That child just went over the waterfall!” she shouted at her husband. “Hurry up! Let’s give them a helping hand!”

    Paragraph 2:
The ambulance came, taking Wyatt out of the park on a stretcher.
    ___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
    【答案】
While everyone else looked on from a distance, this young woman didn’t hesitate. She rushed out and sprinted down the rocks. Seeing my father had pulled Wyatt out of the water, she gave him a striped towel to put under his head. “Keep him still and on his back in case he had injured his spine.” She ordered seriously. She told us that she was a nurse and had already had her husband call for the ambulance. “Will he survive?” I asked in a trembling voice. She nodded firmly.
The ambulance came, taking Wyatt out of the park on a stretcher. Soon, Wyatt was rushed to hospital. There were tests and scans. Wyatt had three broken ribs — injuries that sounded horrific but had been under control. As I knew that Wyatt would be OK, my thoughts fell to the kind woman. She was the one who went toward the unthinkable instead of turning away. The competitive society was forcing us to keep a certain social distance, but it wouldn’t stop us from receiving a helping hand.

Scott Legried was a 50-year -old farmer in Frost, Minnesota. One October morning, he was driving his truck along the country road when a dog popped up out of nowhere. It was too late to hit the brake. Scott had no choice but to turn the wheel sharply to the right to avoid running over the dog.
The dog had a lucky narrow escape, but Scott’s car crashed into the roadside cornfield. He got knocked out and when he came to, he found he was unable to move or even reach for his cellphone lying not far away. Scott was desperate for help.
Fortunately, a motorist driving through the area found Scott and called 911. Scott was rushed to hospital. Without delay, the doctors gave Scott a thorough examination and found that he suffered multiple serious injuries and needed to be operated on immediately. After a 5-hour surgery, Scott was wheeled to his ward, where the doctors told Scott’s wife Susan that it would take several months for Scott to recover before he could do farm work again.
It was really bad news. This was the busiest time of year for the farmers of the region. What the doctors said meant Scott would not be able to bring in their October harvest of soybeans and com in time, which would probably be ruined in the fields. The crops were their hard work of so many days! They meant the world to the family. Besides, wheat should be sown after the soybeans and com were harvested. They couldn’t afford to miss the farm time, but they could do nothing at all since Susan also had to stay in the hospital to accompany and take care of Scot. Feeling extremely anxious and helpless, the couple could hardly fall asleep on the first night in the hospital.
The bad news that Scott had a serious accident spread quickly. The whole community were deeply concerned about him. Frank, director of the community, and some other farmers came to the hospital to see Scott the next day.

    【答案】
Frank comforted the couple and promised to help them out. The couple exchanged a grateful glance at each other, unable to control their excitement. Returning from the hospital, Frank and other farmers made a plan to harvest all of Scott’s crops! More than a dozen farmers showed up at his farm with heavy-duty equipment, like combines, trucks, and grain wagons. In a matter of four hours, they harvested over 240 acres – something that would’ve taken Scott an entire week by himself in good health.
Two months later, Scott recovered and returned home. Seeing the harvested crops piled in the storage, Scott beamed with great joy. What a blessing to have so many caring neighbors! Scott wanted to thank Frank and everyone associated with the labors of organizing the harvest. The next day, Scott’s wife prepared a delicious meal and invited all of them to their house. “It's pretty amazing. You know, these people are taking time out of their busy schedule, this is the busy time of the year for us farmers, ” said Scott. It’s amazing what the community can do when they come together for something good.

“Bye, Mom! Don’t forget to make my pie!” shouted 12-year-old Jake after kissing his mother, Susan, goodbye.
He was anxiously waiting for the bus. Moments later, the bus pulled over, and Jake hopped in, assuming it was just going to be an ordinary ride to school. “Luckily, Mom gave me $6. Otherwise I’d have to walk all the way to school,” he thought.
The bus came to a stop, picking up Christel, a 56-year-old woman from the next stop. She was smelly and looked dirty. Some passengers frowned at her, but she was least bothered about them. Moments later, she trembled through the crowd toward an empty seat next to Jake.
“Ticket, please?!” the conductor said loudly, staring at her. Christel’s face slowly started to go red. “One second, I’m looking for my purse,” she replied. “I...uh...I don’t have money. I forgot to bring my purse,” Christel stammered (结结巴巴地说), embarrassed.
“Lady, this is not a charity ride that picks up beggars for free. I’m stopping the bus right now. Get out!” yelled the conductor as the crowd of passengers turned toward Christel all at once.
Jake witnessed everything and was disappointed at how the conductor treated the poor woman. Then he remembered he still had some change. “Here is your $3...Give her a ticket,” he said to the conductor, throwing the money into his hand.
“Thank you, sweetheart. I am forever grateful to you! What is your name, dear?” said Christel.
“I’m Jake. That’s okay. I just did what I should do,” replied Jake, taking Christel’s words of gratitude casually.
They talked about Jake’s school life. “I want to become a baseball player, but my school does not have such facilities. I don’t want to trouble my mom. She’s already working hard in the restaurant. My father passed away in an accident two years ago,” revealed Jake.
“Alright, Grandma! We’ve arrived at my school. I’ll leave now. Bye-bye!”
Christel was touched by Jake’s warm heart. She stared a second time at his school, watching him disappear inside the gate.

    _______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
    【答案】
The next day Christel paid a surprising visit to the school in her expensive car. Jake was shocked to see her outside his classroom. “I came here to see you. Please follow me to your principal’s office,” said Christel, confusing Jake, who had no idea how his life would change. Christel greeted the principal and told him about her encounter with Jake, expressing gratitude for Jake’s help. Christel turned out to be a wealthy and successful woman. “You must be really proud of your student!” she told the principal.
Jake didn’t realize a bigger surprise was waiting for him outside the principal’s office. “Jake, honey, do you mind visiting your field?” asked Christel. Jake did as she told, hurrying to the school playground. Christel had hired top-class designers to change the ground into a big ballpark. Jake couldn’t believe his own eyes, staring at the latest equipment for the new ballpark. Christel helped to hire an experienced baseball coach for the school. Christel smiled happily, watching Jake and his friends running in the field.

Twenty years ago, my mother, who was in her early eighties at that time, arrived for her regular two-week visit at my home in Chertsey. She lived with my elder brother in Derek most of the time and for ten years had stuck to her habit of going for an hour-long morning walk to keep fit. In Derek, she would walk around a park that is quite close to my brother’s house. Naturally, she was keen to continue her morning walk while with us in Chertsey.
Our preferred park was a 2 km walk from my house and it had a l km walking track. I could not drive her there every day as I had to leave for the office at the same time she wanted to set out. Since there were hardly any footpaths in Chertsey, my mother said she was delighted to walk on the road as she was certain there wouldn’t be much traffic in the morning.
I was less confident so I suggested it would be safer if she changed her walk time to the evening. That way I could take her to the park after work. However, my mother — a determined person — said that she could not change her routine for just a few days and insisted that she would be leaving the house every day at 7 am and returning by 8 am. She started doing this and stuck firmly to her schedule. So one day when she had not returned by 8:30 am, my wife, Qaisa, phoned me in a panic. Worried, I immediately drove home, taking the same route that my mother would have taken for her walk.
Not spotting her anywhere, I went to the police station to report my mother’s disappearance. The station house officer advised me to wait until midnight before filling the report. Since it was only 10 am, I drove back to the park, in the hope of discovering some trace, but in vain. Totally at a loss for what to do next, I returned home and waited impatiently, walking back and forth in the house.

After knowing what had happened, I showed my appreciation of her kindness.
    _______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
    【答案】
At 11:10 am the doorbell rang and my mother stood outside the door smiling, accompanied by a young woman. I hugged my mother tightly and affectionately. Enormously relieved, the young woman told me that my mother had lost her way while returning home after the morning walk. The only description she could provide was that my house was near the park and that the house was made of red bricks. With much effort, and in almost two hours’ searching, the young woman was able to locate my house. She expressed great relief at getting my mother home.
After knowing what had happened, I showed my appreciation of her kindness. I invited her inside to join us for a cup of tea. The woman refused politely and said sincerely that she felt so delighted to have brought my mother safely home to me that she did not require further thanks. Then she drove the car away without even sharing her name and I have not seen her again. This kind act has a lasting influence on me. I always give others a helping hand if possible, even so many years later.

Lucy Marlow had everything an eleven-year-old girl could possibly want except one thing:a pair of pink leather roller skates(旱冰鞋). Unfortunately, the skates cost over $1,700. Even though Lucy’s parents were very indulgent(纵容的), they thought it was too much for a toy. “It’s not a toy!” Lucy cried. “It’s transportation!” Lucy’s parents gave in and promised that she could have them only if she had straight A on her report card.
Soon at the end of the term, Lucy proudly presented her parents with the straight—A report card they’d demanded, and the next weekend, Lucy was whizzing(飞速行驶)around the neighborhood faster than anyone else with her new skates.
Then one day when Lucy went to school, she was surprised to discover there was a new girl in her class. She was sitting at the desk next to Lucy in geography and she looked very friendly.
“Hi! I’m Lucy!” Lucy whispered, “Want to go roller skating after school?”
“Hi! Mi name is Heather. But I’m afraid I can’t!” Heather said.
”Listen, if you don’t have skates, you can use my old ones, “Lucy said.” I have a brand new pair...”
The bell rang, Heather reached to pick up a pair of crutches(拐杖)under the desk and got up. Lucy was shocked to find one of her legs was missing above the knee. She gasped, “Oh, I’m so sorry! What happened?” Heather shrugged, “It was a car accident.”
That night, Lucy couldn’t sleep. She got up and turned on her laptop. There were all kinds of prosthetic limbs(假肢)for kids. Lucy wondered why Heather didn’t have one.
The next day, over lunch, Lucy asked Heather, “So, how come you don’t have a prosthetic limb?” Heather blushed. “I had one three years ago, after the accident,” she explained, “But I outgrew it. My dad lost his job so we don’t have insurance anymore. We’ve contacted a non-profit that helps kids like me, but I’m on a waiting list...” Hearing her words, Lucy fell into a short silence, remembering how she pressured her parents into buying her the pink skates.

A Community Puts on a Dazzling Display of Support
In Sara’s family, putting up Christmas lights was always a big day of celebration. Every year, just after Thanksgiving Day, her dad Anthony, 70, would visit local stores to check out new decorations and then excitedly string lights and hang decorations in and out of the house. The dazzling (绚烂的) display made him a hit in the community.
On 2020 Christmas Eve, as usual, the whole house twinkled with lights, and gifts were piled under the tree. While everyone was looking forward to enjoying another Christmas together as a family, Sara, got a call: the whole family had tested positive for COVID-19. Their Christmas celebration had to be canceled.
At first, everyone’s symptoms (症状) seemed manageable. But right after the new year, Anthony started having trouble breathing and unfortunately passed away two weeks later, though the rest had recovered from COVID-19. The following week of planning the funeral was the worst for Sara and her husband, Frank. Sorrow left them doubled over in pain. The saddest of all was that no neighbours attended her father’s funeral. Only the twinkling Christmas lights at night brought them a little bit joy. The lights were one of the last moments they had of their beloved father, so they kept them up.
One morning in February, Sara received an envelope. “Take your Christmas lights down! It’s Valentine’s Day!!!” the unsigned letter read. Sara looked at the paper in shock. Then she got angry. She could have bottled up that anger, but she decided to write about it instead. She logged on to a local community Facebook group and shared the letter. She ended the post with this: “We all had a tough year. Be kind to people because you never know what they are going through.”

    【答案】
Half an hour later, Frank rushed into the room excitedly, with his phone in the hand. “Honey, your post goes viral!” exclaimed Frank. Sara hesitantly took over the phone and found hundreds of likes and comments under the post. Some expressed their grief over the loss of her beloved dad and some showed anger towards the letter writer. While slowly swiping across the screen with her fingertip and reading each comment, she was so moved that tears streamed down her cheeks. And during the whole day Sara and Frank were bathed in the neighbours’ kindness and warmth.
When night fell, Sara and Frank were surprised by what they saw outside. Against the black night, she noticed the neighbourhood was like a sea of lights. With the catchy Christmas songs echoing softly, the roofs of the buildings, the windows, the gardens, the trees, the fences... all twinkled with colorful Christmas lights and were wrapped with Christmas decorations. Undoubtedly, the neighbours had collectively hung their lights back. Seeing that, Sara and Frank burst into tears. For them, the dazzling lights were not only the honour and memory of their beloved father, but also an overwhelming display of the neighbours’ support.

I was packing lunch for my two children and myself when I suddenly began to doubt whether this was necessary. It was so early in the day it was still dark outside, and I was making sandwiches. I thought about just sending lunch money and getting an extra half hour of sleep. Being a single mom, I needed all the shut-eye I could get.
So why was I adding this stress to my life? It’s all because of genetics (遗传).
I remember my grandmother telling me how, many years ago, she packed leftovers (剩饭) for my grandfather’s lunch. He loved them but always seemed to come home hungry. Finally after much questioning, he admitted he had been giving away half his lunch to a co-worker who had none of his own. From that day forward, my grandmother always sent extra—just in case.
With five kids in school at the same time, my mom didn’t have time to pack lunches. We ate cafeteria food, which was fine with us. In the world of our primary school, it was not cool to bring your lunch from home. There was an exception to the no-pack rule, however. As a punishment, we were forced to bring our own lunch for however many days my mom chose to keep us. My time of suffering came in third grade. I had broken the rules. For four days, my noontime dinner consisted of a cheese and mustard sandwich, a bag of chips and one lonely cookie. By Friday my mom changed her mind. And although I still brought my lunch from home, she packed it for me.
That afternoon I opened my lunchbox to find my favorite egg salad sandwich, a choice apple and a whole giant cake with a note taped on top: “Just in case you want to share.” To my 10-year-old eyes, that cake looked big enough to feed the world. I was in heaven as I offered piece after piece to my friends. It was the best lunch of my life.

    _______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
     【答案】
As I continued packing lunch for my kids, I thought about my grandmother and mother. I never forgot the sacrifice it took for my grandparents to share what little food they had during the Depression. And that my mother continues to do the same. To this day, Thanksgiving at her home always includes at least two guests who are “down on their luck”. None have left her home without a few bucks in their pockets and a grocery bag full of leftovers—just in case they want to share.
I emptied my own packed lunch on the table and divided it between the children, then made two more sandwiches. Although our grocery budget was tight and there was little room for extras, I knew—because of my grandmother and mom—there were others who had much, much less. By sharing the little we had, I was carrying on a tradition that started more than 70 years ago—a lesson of kindness that I could pass on to my own kids. As I dropped a package of noodles into my purse for my new, nod meal, my son and daughter skidded into the kitchen, grabbed their lunches and headed for the door. “I packed extra today,” I called out. “Just in case.”

Have you ever accepted others’ help? Do you remember him or her? You may never know how much each gesture may mean to someone. Sometimes you may think your help is so small, but as a matter of fact, what you do is of vital significance to others.
When young, I worked as an English teacher in a university. During the summer vacation, I was invited to be an instructor at a high school leadership camp by a college. Having been highly involved in many campus activities, I jumped at the opportunity.
About an hour into the first day of camp, immersed (沉浸于) in communications and interactions, I noticed the boy in black for the first time. Small and skinny, the boy was seated alone, staring into space and his obvious discomfort and shyness made him appear fragile. The desperate loneliness he revealed almost stopped me from approaching him, but I remembered the instructions from the senior staff- to stay alert for campers who might fall left out.
I could sense that he was in a new world, that this whole surroundings appeared foreign to him. But I somehow knew it wouldn’t be right to push him, either. That evening at our nightly staff meeting, I made my concerns about him, I explained to my fellow staff members my impression of him and asked them to pay special attention and spend time with him when they could. In the meantime, it struck me that I should do what I could to give him a hand. I argued that he needed a friend, one who could share happiness and sorrow with him. I hoped to be his friend, his real friend to help him go through the challenging period.

    _______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
    【答案】
An idea occurred to me abruptly. Whether he would say yes or not I would try to invite him to our party tonight. As I walked toward him I said, “Hi, my name is Kate and I’m one of the instructor. It’s nice to meet you. How are you?” In a shaky, sheepish voice he unwillingly answered, “Okay, I guess.” I calmly asked him if he wanted to join the activity and meet some new people. He quietly replied, “No, this is not really my interest.” I had already knew the answer, so I left him alone. However, the next day, I tried again. This time I found several campers to come with me. When we approached to him, I tried again, with the same questions as before, “How are you doing? Are you okay? Would you like to come with us?” He refused us again. But I had no plan to give up. Therefore, I would invite him to every activity that followed.
Half a year later, I heard from him. There was an invitation of graduation party in the letter. When it was time for the senior high students to say goodbye to each other, a party was held for them to enjoy the last moment of their friendship. They gathered in the hall, singing, dancing and talking. I looked around to see what the boy was doing. Suddenly I saw what would be one of the most vivid memories of my life. The boy was surrounded by other students, who listened to his stories with great interest. The boy, who was quite different from how he reacted to the group activity, turned to be talkative. It was obvious that his inspiring description attracted his listeners. In that instant, I realized that you may never know how much each ask may mean to someone else.
