Two weeks ago, a 5-year-old girl named Sunshine Oelfke emptied out her piggy bank(存钱罐)onto the living room floor and immediately started counting Her grandmother, Jackie Oelfke, thought she was playing as she carefully lined up the coins, but then she saw the girl put the coins into a plastic bag and place it in her backpack.

That aroused my curiosity," Jackie told CBS News. “Nobody messes with the piggy bank." After observing Sunshine at work a few minutes longer, Jackie decided to find out why the little girl broke into her savings.

What are you doing with that money?" Jackie asked her granddaughter,

I'm taking it to school," Sunshine replied. The little girl finally stated the real reason why she needed the money. “I'm going to take it for milk money. My friend Layla doesn't get milk- her mom doesn't have milk money and I do."

Jackie's heart melted at Sunshine's words. Choked with strong feelings, Jackie held her sweet granddaughter tightly in her arms.

Last week, Jackie and Sunshine met with her teacher, Rita Hausher, and handed her the money Sunshine had saved. There are 20 kids in Sunshine's class and about half don't get milk. It costs $ 0.45 a carton(纸盒).The total adds up to about $ 180 a month for every child in the class to have milk every day.

After dropping Sunshine off at school, Jackie posted a tearful video on social media to explain her granddaughter's plan. To her surprise, dozens of people offered to donate toward the cause. Within a week, Jackie raised more than $1,000. Now every student in Sunshine's class can get free milk for the rest of the year.

Jackie said Sunshine doesn't see her kind act as a big deal. She was just trying to help friends. "She doesn't understand the effect she's brought about," Jackie said. “But now she knows she can do whatever she puts her mind to."

Glitter(闪光粉)has long been popular in primary classrooms. Space topic, art project? Time to break out the glitter. Making cards to send home to parents? Glitter is necessary.

And yet, recent research suggests that glitter is actually bad for the environment. Several schools have even come up with a ban (禁令) on using glitter in the classroom as a result.

The problem is that microplastics, including glitter, do not break up. When these small plastics are washed down the drain and reach the ocean, they can be eaten by fish, seabirds and other marine(海洋的)lifecausing them unhealthy. Now, as a measure to protect marine environments, scientists such as Dr. Trisia Farrelly have gone so far as to suggest that “all glitter should be banned”.

Is a ban on glitter really necessary? Kevin O’Brien, a Year 6 teacher, said, “I believe it to be a good idea if only to reduce the mess and waste caused from its use. Many a time I have been told off by my cleaner." However, Gaynor Bright, a teacher, believes that "Banning glitter in schools won't make a huge difference." Producing environmentally safe glitter is the answer." One thing that O'Brien and Bright agree on, though, is that children should be taught about the harmful influence plastic has on our environment.

Would schools be willing to accept the change? Of the 1,092 nursery workers surveyed, only 22 percent were in favour of banning glitter. O’Brien points out that it is perhaps not down to teachers' desire for the glitter, but “I would suggest that there are many more important issues such as a finance for schools, teacher pay and workload that are much more important than whether glitter should be banned or not," he says.

A ban on glitter is a step too far," Gaynor says. “Education, not banning, is the only way to get our next group of potential adults and leaders to think carefully about the effects on the environment."

(   )4. Why do some schools forbid using glitter?

    A. It costs students too much money.

    B. It is littered everywhere at schools.

    C. It does harm to the environment.

    D. It does harm to students’ health.

(   )5. The attitude of Kevin towards the ban of glitter is ______.

    A. uncertain

    B. doubtful

    C. unconcerned

    D. supportive

(   )6. Who does Gaynor Bright think should be responsible for glitter?

    A. Producers.

    B. Students.

    C. Teachers.

    D. Parents.

(   )7. Which of the following is cared least by most schools?

    A. Teacher pay.

    B. The ban on glitter.

    C. Workload.

    D.  A finance for school.

While watching videos on social media one day, I came across a very unique profile(轮廓): an 88-year-old farmer livestreaming trendy products in a rural setting. I clicked his page and saw that he was livestreaming because he needed to cover his wife's medical expenses. Curiously, I decided to contact him and learn more about his story.

Now as a retired farmer, Wu relies on government subsidies(补贴).One rainy dayhe returned to his run-down one-floor cottage in the suburb of Henan Province and found his wife lying on the ground in great pain. She had broken her leg and lost the ability to walk.

A great burden befell this already poverty- stricken family. The medical expenses for Wu’s wife are about 800 yuan per month. Their daughter, a mother of three children and a housewife, has no means of supporting Wu financially. As a heavy user of social media, Wu’s daughter thought that perhaps they two could try livestreaming as a way to help their family. Then they began livestreaming on social media, and Wu became one of the oldest livestreamers on the platform.

Every day, Wu livestreams for a total of six hours, separated into morning and afternoon sessions. With a broad smile and soothing(宽慰的) voice, he explains the products on his table, which range from water bottles, makeup removers and vegetables to traditional Chinese clothing that Wu himself wears in front of the camera. Thousands of viewers are drawn in by his moving story and amiable(和蔼的) personality. They refer to him dearly as “my uncle Wu” or “Laoxiang

During my interview with him, Wu would laugh warmly. His strong Henan dialect was sometimes hard to understand, but his tone was full of comfort and optimism. “I enjoy livestreaming. One day, one of the viewers came to visit me. I was so happy." Wu spoke about the friendships he made after becoming a livestreamer, and his voice was so contagious (感染力的)that it put a smile on my face.

He also does not avoid showing affection for his wife, “I will buy her good food when I have the money." I am moved by his ability to see the optimistic side of life despite being struck by hardships and his resilience(坚韧) sailing through the low tides of life.

    (   )8. What happened to Wu's family?

    A. They lost the chance to get subsidies.

    B. Wu was forced to retire from his job.

    C. Wu’s wife was unable to walk.

    D. Wu suffered a severe disease.

(   )9. Why did Wu start livestreaming?

    1. To support his daughter.

    B. To promote trendy products.

    C. To share his story with viewers.

    D. To pay his wife’s medical bills.

(   )10. What attracted viewers to Wu?

    A. His good nature and touching story.

    B. The high quality of his products.

    C. His rich experience in front of the camera.

    D. His detailed explanation of products.

(   )11. Which of the following best describes Wu?

    A. Confident and modest.

    B. Open-minded and responsible.

    C. Helpful and sociable.

    D. Cheerful and humorous.

    D

Avi Loeb believesthat it is arrogant(自大的)to suppose we are alone in the universe. This belief fits with Loebs alien spaceship theory that a spaceship outside the earth, or at least a piece of one, might be flying past the orbit of Jupiter(木星)

Astronomers in Hawaii found the first known interstellar(星际的)object in late 2017. It was a blip of light moving so fast past the sun that it could only have come from another star. Almost every astronomer on the planet was trying to figure out how the object, called Oumuamua, got to our faraway part of the Milky Way galaxy. “One possibility is that Oumuamua is debris(碎片)from an advanced technological equipment," Loeb said. "Technology from another solar system just showed up at our door."

Oumuamua is not an alien spaceship," Paul Sutter wrote. He suggested Loeb was simply seeking attention. Most scientists assume Oumuamua is some sort of rock.

Loeb disagrees. He says the object is moving too fast to be a rock. It's moving fast away from the sun as if something is pushing it. Loeb says that Oumuamua's behavior means it can’t be a group of rock shaped like a long potato. He thinks it's more likely an object that's very long and thin, perhaps like a long pancake or a ship's sail. Loeb says that if someone shows him evidence that's different from his beliefs, he will immediately back down.

Loeb considers himself a truth-teller and risk-taker in an age of overly safe, too-quiet scientists. "The worst thing that can happen to me is I would lose my management position, and that would give me even more time to focus on science," Loeb says. He said he wouldn’t mind giving up all the titles he has and returning to the Israeli farming village where he grew up.

(   )12. What theory did Loeb put forward?

    A. Another civilization might exist in space.

    B. Aliens have visited the earth in spaceships.

    C. Spaceships are a tool to find aliens.

    D. Technology from other solar systems is advanced

(   )13. How does Loeb explain “Oumuamua”?

    A. It is actually some sort of rock.

    B. It comes from another civilization.

    C. It is a comet spraying steam.

D.It is shaped like a long potato.

(   )14. What does Loeb think of most modern scientists?

    A. They consider themselves to be truth-tellers.

    B. They keep away from any life dangers.

    C. They don't tend to express challenging ideas.

    D. They dare to take risks for science.

(   )15. What is implied about Loeb in the last paragraph?

    A. He refuses to back down in any way.

    B. He needs evidence to support his beliefs.

    C. He considers giving up his advertisement.

    D. He sticks to his theory with determination.

    第二节(共5小题;每小题2.5分,满分12.5分)

    阅读下面短文,从短文后的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。

Traveling alone can be challenging. I have traveled by myself many times, but every time there was someone to meet me at the other end of the bus, train or plane journey.  16   Last week I had a holiday from work, but none of my friends had the same week off. I still decided to do something, so I booked a train ride to Toronto and reserved a bed in a hostel for one week.

Spend one week by myself.   17   Would I be bored? Quite the opposite. In fact, there are many benefits that come from traveling alone. Firstly, I was able to do whatever I wanted. I spent hours learning the related history in museums or walking all around the city, which would have seemed boring and dull to some of my friends.   18    I discovered my independence and developed map-reading skills that I didn't know I had. I could get up and go to sleep when I wanted and I didn't have to wait for anyone else to shower and get ready every morning. Being in the safe environment of a hostel with like-minded travelers also gives me a great opportunity to meet new people from all over the world, which can help relieve loneliness.

19   I missed having someone to talk to. Experiences are often more enjoyable if they are shared. Without a travel partner, I won't be able to laugh about and remember my Toronto adventure with a friend or family member in years to come.

In addition, those days, I found eating in a restaurant or cooking in the hostel was less fun on my own. I am very proud of myself for raveling alone, and I had a fantastic time in Toronto, 20  Though, maybe it depends on who you travel with--I would rather be by myself than with someone who is lazy, difficult and argumentative.

    A. However, in the future, I think I will always prefer to travel with another person or in a small group.

    B. In spite of the benefits, I found that there were also some disadvantages of traveling alone.

    C. Instead of depending on someone else to remember directions or to suggest activities to do,

    D. Would I be alarmed?

    E. This time was different.

    F. Would I be lonely?

    G. Apart from turning to some strangers for help when in trouble,

    第二节(满分25分)

    阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。续写词数应为150左右。

When my daughters reached the third and fourth grades, I sometimes allowed them to walk to

and from school alone if the weather permitted. One warm spring day, a small friend followed them home after school. This friend had short legs and long floppy ears, with a furry coat and tiny spots across her nose. She was the cutest puppy(小狗)I had ever seen and my girls begged me to keep her.

She was not more than twelve weeks old. She had no identifying marks of any sort. I didn't know what to do. I thought about running an ad in the lost and found but I really didn't want to. It would break the kids' hearts if someone should show up. Besides, her owners should have watched

    her more closely, I thought.

By the end of the week she was part of our family. She was very clever and good with the girls. The following week something told me to check the lost and found section in the local paper.

One particular ad caught my attention and my heart sank at what I read. Someone was searching for a lost puppy near our grade school. They sounded desperate. My hand shook. I could

not ask myself to pick up the phone.

Instead, I pretended I hadn't seen the ad. I quickly put the paper aside and tried to ignore it. I

never said anything about it to the kids or my husband.

By now we had named the puppy. She looked like a Molly, so we called her Molly. She followed the girls everywhere they went. When they went outside, she was one step behind them.

When they did housework she was there to help.

There was only one problem with this perfect dog: My conscience(良心) was bothering me. I knew in my heart I had to call that number and see if our Molly was the puppy they were desperately looking for.

    注意:

    1.续写词数应为150 左右;

    2.请按如下格式在相应的横线上作答。

Knowing that you are interested in Dragon Boat Festival, I am writing to make a brief introduction to you.

The Dragon Boat Festival, which falls on the 5th day of the 5th lunar month, aims to honour the great poet, Qu Yuan. On that day, citizens host the dragon boat competition, indicating the virtues of cooperation and teamwork nowadays. The participants interact with the audience, enjoying the joy of the festival. Besides, we often eat rice dumplings.

The Dragon Boat Festival is around the corner. Would you like to participate in it and spend the day with me?

    Looking forward to your coming.

    第二节

    One possible version:

    Paragraph 1:

With mixed feelings, I finally picked up the phone. Secretly I was praying no one would answer, but a woman did. As I described the dog to her in detail, her voice shook with excitement and she wanted to come right over. Within minutes I heard a vehicle pull up at the drive way and some footsteps stop at the door. Head cradled in my hands and heart hammering, a thousand thoughts crossed my mind: I could pretend I wasn’t home or tell her, “I’m sorry, you have the wrong address." But it was too late: The bell rang and Molly was barking.

    Paragraph 2:

Opening the door, I saw a woman with a little girl sitting in a small wheelchair. One look at Molly, and the little girl's face lit up. “Here, Lucy," she yelled. “Come here!" Molly instantly obeyed, wagging her tail wildly. My heart sank. Seemingly sensing my feelings, the woman explained that Lucy (Molly)was more than just a puppy to her daughter, who was left crippled for life in an accident. “Lucy gave her a reason to live," she choked. Suddenly I felt relieved. I have got so much bless already, I thought. As they pulled out of the drive, I smiled, knowing I had done

the right thing. ..that puppy was exactly where she belonged.
