Ripley, an Aldabra tortoise that lives at the Abilene Zoo, was taken to My Emergency Room 24/7 in Abilene this week after she began showing some signs of discomfort in her back left leg, according to a post on the zoo’ s Facebook page.
“Initial checks did not solve anything,” the zoo said. “ So to take a deeper dive into her check report, we needed to get a CT scan.” The zoo shared photos from Ripley’ s “ unique procedure,” which included shots of the reptile being transported and the procedure itself.
Zoo caretakers recently noticed Ripley, who weighs in at 176 lbs, was experiencing discomfort with one of her feet, according to KTAB. However, the zoo was not equipped with the proper equipment to check Ripley's condition, leading to Thursday's trip to the emergency room, according to the report.
KTAB shared footage on YouTube from parts of the CT scan, including shots of Ripley going in and out of the machine and riding through the facility in a large tan-colored tub.“ We had the most amazing patient today! Thank you Abilene Zoo for trusting us with your friend, Ripley!” My Emergency Room described their post.
With the procedure now complete, the doctors at the zoo will analyze Ripley’ s test results and monitor her condition. They will also create a treatment plan to help Ripley recover. Clay Carabajal, the supervisor of conservation for the Abilene Zoo, told that the zoo received amazing help after asking for support for Ripley, adding that the zoo cannot do these things without our community.
“The community of Abilene is an amazing community,” Carabajal said. “ They support the Abilene Zoo, and every time we need something, they’ re there for us. And My Emergency Room is an excellent example of that.”
    24. Why did Ripley need a CT scan?
    A. It seemed that it’s over the normal weight.
    B. Basic examination failed to identify its causes.
    C. There were some signs of discomfort in her back left leg.

Hidden in the valleys of Fish Lake, Utah, lies a near-mythical stand of trees. “Pando”– which translates to “I spread” in Latin – covers 43 hectares and is the largest living single organism on Earth. Pando is formed of 47,000 genetically identical aspen(白杨)stems that developed from a single seed. Although it has survived for thousands of years, today it’s under great pressure.
Aspen is different from most other trees – their root systems are completely interconnected, and this allows them to reproduce rapidly. In response to environmental stresses such as fire or pests, the trees release chemical compositions to the root system, which lead to the release of new “suckers” – young, nutrient-rich shoots that quickly grow through the soil to replace the dying trees.
“This has worked for a very long time,”says Paul Rogers, director of the Western Aspen Alliance. “But in the modern era, we’ve filled the system with browsers. As younger suckers are browsed, there are no longer younger generations coming through.” Fences are an immediate measure, but “they’re a first-aid,” says Rogers. “They’re expensive and not practicable in the long-term. We need to save the patient right now and that means quick treatment. With fencing, you get a wave of growth, which makes the trees easily go down with a disease. Last year, 90 per cent of Pando’s stems inside the fences were affected with black canker(溃疡).” As the health of the root system fails, a single poisonous disease could completely wipe Pando out.
Pando has become symbolic for many who understand its biology. “There’s the obvious conservation value,” says Rogers. “But beyond that, Pando is a “canary” in the coal mine – an indicator(风向标) of forest health worldwide. If we can’t take care of this prized individual, how are we going to take care of the rest? Our impact on ecosystems is all playing out within 43 hectares.”
28.What is paragraph 2 mainly about Pando?
    A. Its root systems. B. Its immune system.
    C. The pressure it is facing. D. Its reproductive strategy.
29.What’s the advantage of fences in helping Pando with a disease?
    A. It offers an immediate effect B. It is set up at a low cost.
    C. It is effective in the long run. D. It contributes to fighting disease.
    30. Why does the author mention “canary” in the last paragraph?
    A. To explain his viewpoint. B. To avoid unnecessary repetition.
    C. To stress the importance of Pando. D. To warn the readers of the danger.
31.Which of the following may Rogers agree with?
    A. Protecting Pando makes no sense. B. Pando is an indicator of the coal mines.
    C. Pando represents the whole ecosystems. D. Pando can not be too well taken care of.
    D
Dragonflies’ ability to move in any direction at high speed or hang in the air makes them the perfect model for robotic flight.
Specialists from the University of South Australia spent months studying their flight to build a winged drone (无人机). Study leader Javaan Chahal believes that flapping wing drones based on the dragonfly’s shape and movement will simply be more flexible and energy efficient. “They can turn quickly at high speeds and take off while carrying more than three times their own body weight,” says Chahal. “They are also one of nature's most effective predators, targeting, chasing, and capturing their prey with a 95 percent success rate.”
Dragonflies developed their flying and survival abilities over millions of years. Once male dragonflies finish their underwater larval (幼虫) stage, they spend most of their adult life in fight against rivals, hunting, and avoiding predators (捕虫者).
Dragonfly-like drones could be ideal for collecting and delivering loads, say the researchers, taking on long missions and exploring fragile natural environments with ease.
Investigating the way that dragonflies remain stable during flight also reveals the techniques they use to get themselves out of tricky situations. Imperial College London linked high-speed cameras with motion tracking devices showing dragonflies performing upside-down backflips(后空翻) to regain balance and normal flight. This skill can even be performed while they are unconscious.
Not all attempts to build dragonfly-like drones are successful. TechJet’s crowdfunded drone was supposed to operate as a camera, but it failed before production. A similar project at Animal Dynamics–called the Skeeter micro-drone–is currently being funded to develop a commercial product.
Yet the principles behind dragonfly drones are reliable. NASA has settled on a nuclear-powered craft called Dragonfly to survey the surface of Saturn’s moon Titan in 2034. Though NASA’s project is actually not a winged drone, engineers are still convinced they can crack the code of nature’s most gifted flying insect and revolutionize unmanned flight.
    32. Why does Javaan Chahal mention the “95 percent success rate”?
    A. To show that dragonflies are nature’s excellent insect hunters.
    B. To imply that dragonflies cannot always succeed in hunting.
    C. To highlight that dragonflies are flexible and energy efficient.
    D. To prove that dragonflies often have sharp and speedy move.
    33. What can the dragonflies NOT do according to the passage?
    A. fly in any direction at high speed B. take off with much weight
    C. explore fragile environment with ease D. avoid predators in adult life
    34. What can we infer from the passage?
    A. No other insects are more effective predators than dragonflies.
    B. All dragonflies share the same adult life after their larval stage.
    C. Dragonflies can do backflips both knowingly and unknowingly.
    D. Most of the dragonfly-like drone projects so far have failed.
    35. What’s the best title for this passage?
    A. Dragonflies’ Perfect Flying Technique for Drones
    B. New Development in Dragonflies’ Flight Research
    C. The Promising Future of Dragonfly-like Drones
    D. Principles for Solving the Mystery of Dragonflies

How To Support a Child With Test Anxiety
It's normal for students to feel nervous before or during a test. 36 .If you doubt your child is one of the many strugglings with test anxiety, here are some important things to help manage it.
Focus on time and stress management skills. Many children with test anxiety fear that they won’t be able to complete the test in time, so for these kids, focusing on time management skills may help. Winnett says working with planners and calendars and breaking up large projects into smaller tasks can be a good way. 37 .Talk to your child's teacher about tools students can use and practice deep breathing with your child, which can also be a good way to help ease your child's nerves the night before.
38 .Children with test anxiety may express a fear of disappointing their parents. Zeltser says parents may reinforce that fear and advises parents to focus on other values – trying your best, for example. Parents can reframe(再构造)these thoughts by telling the child that it’s more important to try hard than it is to get a perfect score on every exam.
Communicate with educators.Teachers are likely to notice test anxiety earlier than parents are.Things like going to the bathroom frequently or shaky hands during exams could be signs of test anxiety that parents may never see. 39 .
Know when to seek professional help. If you’ve tried all of these techniques and nothing seems to help, it might be worthwhile to visit a therapist. Therapists who are trained in techniques like cognitive behavioral therapy will be able to help children with particularly terrible test anxiety. 40 .
    A.Help children manage test anxiety
    B.Avoid overemphasizing good grades
C.Often, parents can be pretty in the dark
D.Teachers may see it well before a parent is aware
E.Stress management techniques like using a stress ball can also help
F.Additionally, specialists are better suited to identify the cause of the test anxiety

When Marco was a boy, he tried everything to get his father’s love and attention. He worked hard to earn exceptional marks and always tried to behave well.
Sensitive and shy, he was so timid(胆小的) that he hid behind his hair, which he wore long around his face and ears. To make it worse, Marco was naturally shorter than the other kids. And because his good marks had allowed him to skip second grade—he was younger than everyone else. This added nothing to his already low self-confidence.
Meanwhile, it felt to Marco that his father had little time for him. Except for his demands around chores after school, communication was nonexistent. It seemed to Marco that the only time his dad ever spoke to him was to be demanding or critical.
Then one day, his aunt called him. To Marco, this seemed like a miracle. Aunt Ginette usually only called once a year, on his birthday. She said she had just seen some young teenagers participate in a public speaking contest called Gala Personnalité. She thought he should give it a try. She told him she firmly believed he could perform on stage like the other kids, since she had seen him do skits for the family at Christmas.
Marco was shocked. Him? Onstage? In a public speaking contest? To agree would be contrary to his entire shy, timid personality and dad would say no. But Aunt Ginette was so confident and sure that it was something he could do. She truly believed his father would support him. And feeling her strong belief, Marco went against everything he had ever done or felt, and agreed to enter the contest.
All that winter, twice a week after dinner, he took three different buses for the three-hour round-trip to practice. Marco was taken by an energy he never felt before. The hours and the obstacles no longer counted. All he had in mind was to practice and practice.

根据第三段“Fences are an immediate intervention, but ‘they’re a band-aid,’ says Rogers. ‘They’re expensive and not practicable in the long-term. We need to save the patient right now and that means quick interventions. With fencing you get a wave of growth, which actually makes the trees susceptible to disease.”
But beyond that, Pando is a canary in the coal mine – an indicator of forest health worldwide. If we can’t take care of this prized individual, how are we going to take care of the rest?
We need to save the patient right now and that means quick interventions.

They are also one of nature's most effective predators”可知A项不对。根据第三段”Once male dragonflies finish …, they …avoiding predators.” This skill can even be performed while they are unconscious(无意识的).” 根据倒数第二段 “Not all attempts to build dragonfly-like drones are successful.”
37.E 【解析】根据本段主题句可知,本段包括两个方面即focus on time 和 stress management skills.
可知要与教育者交流,故G选项中talk to your child’s teacher.

    A Tree-Planting Activity
Last Sunday witnessed a tree-planting activity held by our school, which aimed to raise our awareness of protecting plants.
All the students from three grades gathered at the school gate and headed for Nanshan mountain at 8 a.m. On arriving at the park, we all worked together as planned. Some dug pits and put seedlings in and others filled the pits with earth and others watered them. With our joint effort, the hillside was lined with rows of seedlings bathed in the sunshine. Exhausted as we were, we tasted the joy of labor.
This activity will definitely be a sweet memory of our high school life. Not only did we learn how to plant trees, but also it stimulated our passion for promoting environmental protection. Every participant expects more similar activities.

Four months later, the big night arrived. Seeing his Aunt Ginette in the audience was quite a comfort. Unexpectedly, beside her sat his father, smiling at him. Even so, Marco was so overwhelmed with anxiety that he could feel his palms sweating. But when he stepped onto the stage and began to speak, he felt totally at home. He was funny, witty and acted extremely natural as he spoke. He appeared energized and very alive—it felt like a real birth. When he finished, the audience broke into thunderous applause.
To his shock and amazement, he won the first prize! Upon hearing the result, he was thrown into the wildest excitement. He stepped off the stage, glanced for his aunt and rushed towards her who was stretching her arms to embrace him. Then, he felt a mighty hand on his shoulder. It was his dad! “I’m so proud of you!” he said earnestly. At that moment, he started to believe in himself. Not only did he feel his father’s deep love for him, but he began to realize he deserved to be happy and respected.
1]. Even so, Marco was so overwhelmed with anxiety that he could feel
his palms sweating. (so...that...
He stepped off the stage, glanced for his aunt and rushed towards her who was stretching her arms to embrace him. (使用did, did and did三连动)

    Text1.
M: Sally, I wondered if you’d like to have dinner with me this evening.
W: Oh, I’m sorry, Mike. My parents are out so I’m staying in to take care of my little brother.
    Text 2.
M: What’s Sara doing in that shop?
W: She’s buying some postcards to send to her family.
M: Really? I prefer to make phone calls.
W: I like neither postcards nor phone calls. I usually keep in touch with my family through the Internet.
    Text 3.
W: What would you like to do today?
    M: Shall we go hiking?
W: Sounds good! I’d like to invite Peter and Linda. I am sure they will be glad to join us.
    M: I can’t wait to go.
    Text 4.
M: Are you going to drive to the Bank of Communications? It’s difficult to park in that street.
W: I know, so I’m going to walk there if you come with me.
M: OK, I’ll accompany you after I fill this form.
    Text 5.
W: Come on! It’s time to go!
M: Wait a minute! Just hold your horses! What’s your hurry, anyway?
W: Well, I’ve got to stop and get gas in the car first.
    Text 6
M: This is Andrew Brown. What can I do for you?
W: Mr. Brown, I may have your mobile phone.
M: Oh, yes. I thought I had lost it somewhere on the underground this morning.
W: Actually I found it under a table at a restaurant and I thought I should call the work number I found in its directory.
M: Thank you very much. I appreciate you calling me. It is such a relief! I just thought I need to buy a new one as soon as possible.
W: I thought it was the right thing to do. I work in TC Bank on Roosevelt Street and I leave at about five, so please come to pick it up before then.
M: OK. See you then and thanks again.
    Text 7
M: Hey, Devi, have you thought about where you would like to go to dinner on Friday for your birthday?
W: I’m not sure. I don’t know many restaurants around here.
M: You know, we could look online at the local Internet sites.
    W: Good. Let’s take a look!
M: What kind of food would you like for your birthday?
W: I enjoy Thai or Japanese the best.
M: This one, Shogun, looks good.
W: Oh yes, I’ve heard of that one. Everyone I’ve spoken with says that it is great.
M: Would you like to go there then?
W: I think that would be a really good choice. Let’s call and make a reservation.
    Text 8
M: Amanda, could you make a call to the cinema to see if there are still some seats left for the movie this afternoon?
W: Honey, I’ve already booked tickets online for the four o'clock movie. I’m thinking of picking them up from the ticket office on the way to the restaurant. What do you think?
M: OK. Well, the Jacksons want to move our appointment forward by a half hour earlier. That means we should be there at 1:30.
W: Then we don’t have enough time. We’d better get moving. Oh, before I forget, can you remind me to stop by the
bookstore on the way back home? I have to order a book there.
    M: OK.
    Text 9
W: No, I missed it. What happened?
M: Well, three families had to live like Wild West settlers from the 1880s. They didn’t have any modern things. No TV, no phone, no shampoo, very few clothes, and the nearest store was 16 kilometers away. One family, the Clunes from California, had a very difficult time.
W: Why? What did they find difficult?
M: Gordon, the father, did a lot of hard physical work. He chopped down trees and built the house when they first got there and he worked very hard all the time.
    W: What about the mother?
M: She had a hard time too. She couldn’t stand wearing the same clothes every day and she hated not wearing makeup. She had to cook, clean the house, and wash clothes all without any machines.
W: Did the children enjoy it?
M: At first they complained that there was too much to do. They had to help with the animals, cooking, chopping wood. The teenage girls missed shopping and their friends and the boys missed the TV and skateboarding.
W: Did they change over the six months?
M: Yes. They all changed. Near the end of the six months, Tracy, who was 15, said she didn’t care about makeup and clothes. They all realized what is important is being with the family and friends and really getting to know them.
    Text 10
In Japan there are many holidays and other great days. We can tell only a few here. The fifth birthday of a boy is a great day in the family. The boy puts on a shirt like the one his father wears. It is an important moment in his life and means that he must now be a manly little boy like his father. He must smile when he has pain or trouble. He must carry on. The day when a girl becomes seven years old is a big day in the family. She may now wear a sash (腰带) like the one her mother wears. Her friends and her mother’s friends come and drink tea and eat cakes. It means that the girl must now be a womanly little girl and help in the home. One of the great holidays in Japan is the Emperor’s birthday. Instead of school, there are picnics, games, sports and speeches, as we have on our fourth of July in America.
