Step 3  Language points

1. Well, maybe Confucius and Shakespeare. 噢，可能是孔子和莎士比亚。

maybe 副词，意为“或许；大概”，在句中作状语，相当于 perhaps，常位于句首。

Maybe she’ll come this afternoon. 她可能今天下午来。

注意：may be 意为“也许是; 可能是”；它是“情态动词+动词原形”结构，在句中作谓语。

I can’t find Jim. He may be in the library. 我找不到吉姆，他可能在图书馆。

2. But I think I’d describe Confucius more as a teacher and thinker than a writer. 但我更愿意将孔子描述为一位教育家兼思想家，而非作家。

more...than...意为“与其说是……不如说是……”。

It’s even more a poem than a picture. 与其说它是一幅画，不如说它是一首诗。

He is more a singer than an actor. 与其说他是个演员，不如说他是个歌唱家。

我们仍然受到孔子思想的影响。

be influenced by...意为“受到……的影响”。此句中，用了一般现在时的被动语态。

一般现在时的被动语态的基本结构是：

动作承受者+am/is/are +过去分词（+by +动作执行者）.

The classroom is cleaned by us. 教室被我们打扫。

Their works are still read by many people today.

现在他们的著作仍然被许多人阅读。

4. ...and Shakespeare’s plays also make a lot of sense to us today. ……而且莎士比亚的戏剧对于今天的我们来说也很有意义。

make sense 有意义，合情理

make a lot of sense 非常有意义

Lu Xun’s novels make a lot of sense to us. 鲁迅的小说对我们非常有意义。

The meeting makes a lot of sense to these volunteers.

5. He was important, but I suppose he isn’t as well-known as Confucius or Shakespeare. 他很重要，但我认为他不如孔子和莎士比亚出名。

suppose 意为“猜想，推测，认为”。suppose的用法：

①后面常接that引导的宾语从句，that 可以省略。

I suppose（that）we’ll go there next week. 我猜想我们下周将去那儿。

②be supposed to do sth. 意为“应该做某事”。

What time are you supposed to be there? 你应该几点到那儿？
